here we go, he thought. it was a dance he’d done plenty of times before with authorities in kanto, before the takeover.[break][break]

“sure,” he said with a smile, ”but fair warning, it’s a mess inside, too.”[break][break]

he turned to let her in, holding the door. the office was soggy and there was a heavy must mixed with the brine of seawater and waterlogged wood. paper decayed and the metal legs of the desk pushed into a corner had quickly begun to rust.[break][break]

his persian was slow trailing behind them, but it wasn’t lazy dawdling or out of fear. as she stalked along, she eyed the edges of trees for prey hiding under the cover of dappled shadows. as he walked beside cyrus, desmond was content to let her stay at the rear, knowing his cat’s antisocial tendencies.[break][break]

nothing had happened, and orders were slow to come. he had other things to do, that nagged at his mind.[break][break]

”i hope so. this is pretty boring.”[break][break]

such peace could only last so long on battlegrounds, however. in the distance, if he listened, he could just barely hear the sounds of war.[break][break]

”hoenn is full of surprises. maybe we’ll still see something interesting out here, like a paradox pokemon, or one of those golden phantoms.”[break][break]

the reminder went ignored. desmond knew better than to push too much at once. later, in the right environment, with a bit of coaxing he was sure he’d get what he wanted.[break][break]

”uh-huh. don’t forget, cyrus," he called over his shoulder again anyways, placing the brochure on the counter on his way out.[break][break]

on the cover was a bird’s eye view of a hotel and casino called sapphire cove, situated on a beautiful slateport beachfront. there were photos of a sleek casino and all its accompanying nightlife, pools, and bars. it was close to great restaurants, and, according to the brochure, perfect for a romantic getaway.[break][break]

the door clicked shut behind desmond, and he was gone, but definitely sure to text at some point.[break][break]

hero? savior. it did not seem so. not for him, at least. dmitri seemed a predator that stalked closer through the dark, and desmond found himself freezing up more and more with every step that brought the imposing man and his dusknoir closer.[break][break]

the barrel of the gun in desmond’s hand was easy to force downward. it shook, the teen’s arms weak from the weight he’d been dragging around all night, and the paralyzing fear that coursed through him.[break][break]

how did he know? there was no blood, but maybe he’d missed something.[break][break]

desmond hesitated, trying to process his jumbled thoughts. memories of suits and mysterious visitors, and rumors of the syndicate that his family worked with.[break][break]

the stone cold face of a killer staring back at him did nothing to break the confidence in desmond’s smile, foolish or not.[break][break]

”nice to meet you, tori,” he said in turn, shaking her hand and tucking the glove neatly into his pocket. whatever work he’d been wearing it for was done.[break][break]

his eyes lingered for a moment, as she tucked wet hair behind her ear. people looked so pretty standing in the rain, raw and washed by the wild weeping of such a tragic world. the rumble of the storm called his attention and he followed her gaze.[break][break]

”always." he smirked. "let’s see this new hoennian marvel.”[break][break]

it was a shame the majestic gold pokemon he’d heard about couldn’t be captured. still, desmond was more than glad to go after one of hoenn’s newest apocalyptic marvels, if only to see what it was capable of.[break][break]

he was punctual as ever, neatly dressed even in his field work attire. a persian slunk along at his side. upon their arrival, its eyes went to the lucario, and then to the zeraorac carefully – an unfamiliar creature.[break][break]

desmond identified the mythical pokemon in the corner of his eye with great curiosity. on the surface, his attention fell to the pretty violet mercenary he’d been paired up with.[break][break]

he smiled, approaching with an easy stride. “how’s it going? hope i didn’t keep you waiting too long.” after sliding off a black glove, he held out his hand. “i’m desmond.”[break][break]

it was a short conversation. on the surface, something to do with a get-together. he put in an order for tandoori combusken, and said he’d see them later.[break][break]

the phone slid back into his pocket. getting caught by surprise was something he’d learned to roll with.[break][break]

“yeah, i do,” he replied, glancing at the battered little office’s exterior. its walls were gnarled and streaked with grime; inner devastation obscured by a crack in the old window. “the flood really did a number.”[break][break]

turning back to the ranger, he smiled and tugged off a dark glove to offer his hand. “evan mclain.” his brow furrowed slightly. “is there something i can help you with?”[break][break]

as much as he wanted to build him up, desmond also wanted to tell cyrus what to do. he imagined it would be so much fun, that he barely refrained from pushing further in that moment.[break][break]

”i could make you say it,” he teased, almost softly. ”but i won’t, because i think you would probably melt into a puddle.”[break][break]

he relented with a sigh, though not without leaning into the path of his friend's fleeing gaze to reassure him, “don’t worry. you’re going to do great.”[break][break]

because cyrus was smart, careful, and more than a few things desmond wasn't, and for that, he believed in him wholeheartedly. his fingers went up to grip his shoulders and he shook him a little, before giving him a pat on the arm and pacing away again.[break][break]

”are you a macchiato or a cappuccino? my bet's on espresso.”[break][break][break]

the voice of a stranger nearly made him jump out of his skin. he stumbled in the boat, heart racing. a pokeball fell beneath the seat where he’d been setting down the corpse he’d dragged aboard.[break][break]

frantic, he pulled an empty pistol at the dark suit approaching on the dock. sharp leather shoes gleamed in the speckled moonlight through the rain. the ghost over his shoulder made the man's presence even more menacing.[break][break]

too menacing, desmond realized, to be law enforcement. no, he knew these people. had seen them here and there growing up, when they'd appeared to speak with his father or his uncle.[break][break]

the gun lowered. his chest heaved like someone who’d been outrunning the hounds of hades.[break][break]

a smile lingered at cyrus’s stroke of confidence before it predictably fell flat. this tendency was as frustrating as it was strangely endearing.[break][break]

they were there because they were needed. welcomed to stay because they’d done well, and because without kanto’s branch, team rocket would have been off the regional map. their sole total victory in petalburg was proof enough.[break][break]

it took sharp teeth, but also talent and expertise to win a war, and that was why they weren’t still going through the motions in kanto.[break][break]

“you just said you were good at what you do.” he approached the desk where cyrus leaned at its edge. “so own it. tell me you’re the best vet in hoenn.”[break][break]

although there would be messes he’d inevitably find himself picking through in the wake of kyogre’s rage, it was not the kind of dirty work he’d been referring to.[break][break]

no longer pacing, he faced cyrus fully with a bemused pinch still in his brow.[break][break]
