In hindsight, Lavinia should have known that the most difficult part of a work day with her mother wouldn't be anything technical, but simply refraining from physical touch. Or, well, maybe she was overestimating herself now that her anxiety had passed; but it really did take effort to keep from bounding to her mother's side at the sight of that smaller smile. She would have to make up for it once they were home, she decided.

For now there was work to be done, though Linus was doing all the heavy lifting so far. He'd better be doing it well too, as she had to back up that little brag from earlier; but she trusted him to deliver, as he knew her better than most.

The only person whose knowledge rivaled the Espeon's was standing beside her, and so Lavinia didn't have it in her to be embarrassed at her fear being remarked on. Of course her mom had noticed.

"Mhm," Lavinia murmured, the reassurance cracking her composure some. She allowed herself to take hold of her mom's hand and give it a squeeze before drawing back. To reassure Kelpie in turn, she grinned. "I could, but then I'd have its remains all over my shoes. No thank you."

The moment of playfulness was short-lived, as no sooner did they enter the tunnel than something caught her mother's attention. Lavinia obeyed by sheer reflex, ripping her gaze away from the mural and stepping back hurriedly, before she noticed what Calpurnia was actually doing. Oh, this was so not a good idea.

"Uh, Mom —"

There was no time to form a protest before the stone began to shift, which was perhaps good as far as Lavinia's stellar behavior was concerned, but very likely bad when it came to her continued existence. So much for being a skeptic. If they survived this, she would have to show her mom some horror movie tropes. In the meanwhile, she brought Kalliope out and buried her nails into her palms. With a ponderous noise the wall moved to reveal a passageway, out of which came...

Yet Lavi's relief lasted only a few seconds; that is, the amount of time it took for her to notice that his fur was continuously rippling and his tail was flicking at a speed she'd seen only once before, when they'd confronted jayden cross. Worst of all, the gem on his forehead was shining while he used his Future Sight.

Since she'd come all the way out to Lavaridge to challenge the local gym, Lavinia figured that she might as well enjoy the trip to the fullest. She wasn't sure whether to go down into the mountain pass or head upwards to the magma crater, though... Maybe she would prolong her stay for a few days and do both. Luckily, collecting volcanic materials for science camp was a sound excuse to linger here. She'd have to come back prepared and actually collect them, of course, but still.

The sky is beautiful again tonight, beautiful and familiar. Sitting on the porch with a blanket on her shoulders and her laptop's glow cast over her features, Lavinia wonders at the need for either. It's not that cold, and seeing the patterns is simple enough that she could forego the charts. In the end, though, she merely adjusts the blanket. Better safe than sorry, and as for Mossdeep Space Center's database... Astronomy is a science, and science requires precision.

Some might even say it requires coldness, but Lavinia can't help smiling as she looks away from the data and up to the night sky. The cluster of stars she's enlarged on her screen is small, unassuming even, blurring into the much larger figure next to it; yet her eye is keen, and she has no doubt that she's looking at a songstress. She sighs, wishing she were actually at the Space Center. This will have to do, though.

Lavinia had about five seconds of peace before her little brother let go of her hand to dash ahead. As expected, really. She could scold him for it, but it was best to pick her battles. Zinnia, meanwhile, made a tune out of the word "Clefairy" and took to swinging her sister's arm. Well, at least she was keeping her hand in Lavinia's.

"Xander! Get back here!" She said, and watched with impassivity as he ran back then away then back then away, all while telling her to hurry up every time he made the trek. "Yeah, yeah, I'm coming, okay?"

As she went, it occurred to Lavinia that her poor Hatterene probably wanted to get the fuck away from all this excitement. Before she could extend the offer to Kalliope, though, the Espeon's tail flicked and a Cufant came into view.

"Can I ride it?!" Xander exclaimed, breathless with excitement. "Please, Lavi, can I?"

"No," Lavinia answered in a tone that brook no argument. "You can play with it, though, if it's docile."

It was, as Cufant often were if she recalled correctly, and the children petted it happily for quite a while. In the meantime Lavinia withdrew her Hatterene, waiting a few more minutes before she cleared her throat.

"Ready to move on? Unless one of you wants to use your Safari Ball, that is."

They did not, thankfully, and so bid the Cufant farewell before moving on.

They haven't been here for even ten minutes and already Lavinia owes a woman she barely knows — a woman who was patronizing her just seconds ago — her damn life. At least in part, anyway. She is pretty sure Kalliope's singular healing move is helping, too. Good thing her Hatterene learned it even at the expense of her bloodlust. Although it wouldn't hurt to have another Hatterene to heal...

"I'm sorry," she murmurs to Higashi, properly abashed, even though she hates it. Hates the way she sounds, the way she has to posture humility, the way she no doubt looks weak and pathetic. Well, that was a very pathetic display, so she only has herself to blame. "I'll be more careful."

She means that last, if nothing else. Only, she's as concerned for her own pride as for their limited-supply miracle cure. There's no time to inquire about the vial's contents, though the scholar in her would very much like to. The specifics don't really matter, in any case. She knows enough about this world to make an educated guess: Whatever that cure is, it comes from a Pokémon.

As much as she hates them, Lavinia has to admit that they are useful.

But then, the mere fact that she expanded her roster in preparation for this trip is already an admittance, isn't it? Just not quite so explicit. She'll mull over the uses of a potential second Hatterene later. For now, the Cherrim she's brought will have to do.

"Absorb," she says without preamble, without even waiting for the light to fade, and watches as it does its thing. Absorb works, thank the gods; or rather, Higashi. "That was a great idea."

Whereas Yuina has quickly cemented herself as a valuable member of their team — of any team, Lavinia would go as far as to say —, Montgomery is... The exact opposite. Fine, she herself hasn't exactly been useful so far, but at least she hasn't said the same thing every time she's opened her mouth. To think that he's — What did he say he works with, again? It doesn't matter. He might be like twice her age, but he's also pissing her off.

"Can you say anything else?" She snaps, nearly hisses really. "I'll admit I was stupid, but I'm doing my best to recover quickly. Get a move on yourself —" she cuts herself off just before calling the man a moron, swallowing the insult, " — go scouting like she said. Thank you, Cahill."

At least two out of three adults on this party are reasonable, but there's a part of Lavi that can't help thinking she should have stayed home. No amount of research compares to real experience — which she knew already —, she's out of her depth, and she could... Well, she could die. She should have listened to her mother.

That doesn't make any difference now, though. She's here, so she has to suck it up, be mature and make herself useful; or else the shame might be even worse than death.

"I apologize," Lavinia says after a beat, shakily.

Linus comes to rub himself against her legs while Kalliope floats just behind her protectively, and even the nameless Cherrim leans against her. The latter spooks her, but she allows it.

The manifesto made things pretty clear, Higashi says, and Lavinia can feel the warmth of anger and shame spread over her face. The fact that it's the woman closest to her age in their party who corrects her — patronizingly too, as she goes into the dangers like Lavinia wouldn't know even that much — makes her feel worse still. So, she's an ignorant child to them. Fine. She'll prove otherwise.

"I read the manifesto," she says, managing not to snap only because she must be charming. Their environment makes it far harder than usual. With an apologetic smile she adds, "Sorry. Bad joke."

She really did read the manifesto, as a matter of fact, though she doesn't quite recall its detailed contents. She should have memorized it like she does with all other material. The fact that she was in bed with a swollen ankle and more bitterness than she knew what to do with shouldn't have kept her from it. One mistake, and she looks like a complete fool.

Great going, Lavinia, she thinks, her anger more directed at herself than at Higashi. Keep this up, and your career may end before it starts. Self-deprecation does nothing but make her eyes burn along with her face, so she thinks instead: I must not fear. I can do this. Right. She can do this. Even if she can't, she has to; and she will. She will.

Yet she is only a girl — one possessed of uncommon determination and pride, perhaps, but a girl all the same — whose willpower shrinks before the unknowable. Ultra Space, which already took her father away, now takes away her dignity too. She can feel Eternatus' heartbeat all around them, and realizes with a start how small she is compared to a Legendary Pokémon; or even just the innards of one.

All of which is to say that Lavinia takes no more than a few steps before the floor crawls under her, as though the beast were trying to expel their party in the same manner that a person expels phlegm from their lungs, and her ankle — healed, but still sensitive — twists. She crashes with a yelp, and though Kalliope's claws spare her from the worst of the impact, still her arm makes contact with a festering pool. Her eyes widen.

Lavi swallows panic and tears alike, instead beating the cosmic dust off of her trousers with the arm that is not covered in oozing goo. Her jacket is half disintegrated already, and though she can't see her skin beneath the poison, she can feel it burning. That arm — the left — she is careful not to move as she rights herself and testily places her weight on her ankle. It's not twisted, so that's something.

"Aside from the corroding poison," she says with as much dignity and sangfroid as she can muster, "I'm alright, so that's the good news. The bad news is, well, uh, you know. Any suggestions?"

Ultra Deep Sea is terrifying, but Lavinia takes some comfort in the fact that she's used to fear by now. The world itself has been terrifying for as long as she can recall, teeming with Pokémon everywhere, from the wilderness through restaurants to her own fucking house, because her family is as crazy for the creatures as everyone else. She wishes they took after Calpurnia.

The irony takes a moment to register. Wouldn't it be far simpler to wish that she didn't take after her mother? It's not that she wants to be like Kelpie in every respect — or rather, it's not only that —, but she finds it almost impossible to imagine a life without fear in it. Besides, fear can be useful. Healthy, even. Against creatures as powerful as Pokémon, it certainly is. Within Ultra Space, even more so.

Yet, for all that she's familiar with this strange dimension through research and with fear through experience, it still takes everything in Lavinia to keep from shrieking. She thought Morrighan was speaking figuratively, for fuck's sake! Why is the woman so casual about this?! The other guy's the same, and their last party member doesn't seem phased either. What the fuck is wrong with all of them?

For that matter, what the fuck is wrong with the League? She would think that "hey, we're sending you into the stomach of an Eternatus" would be the sort of thing that any participants in the expedition would be told upfront, and yet. And yet.

May the holy fucking goat and all the other legendary Pokémon she's never believed in protect her despite her atheism. She hasn't prayed since Chryssy went missing in the war zone and she really didn't want to be doing it again so soon after that, but there's nothing else for it. She takes a deep breath.

"Um, I beg your pardon?" Lavinia says to no one in particular, her voice shaking only slightly. Since her insane teammates are keeping their cool, so must she, if only for the sake of her future in science. "Was I supposed to, uh, be aware of that?"

Maybe she should quit while she can, actually. Damn her papers, science camp, scholarship to Slateport University and all the rest. She could be an astronomer instead, or sell fries for the rest of her life. Gods, she'd kill to be at that awful job right now.

It was a beautiful day, crisp and clear, perfect for outdoor reading — or for literally any other outdoor activity than the one Lavinia was engaged in. Zinnia had been going on about Clefairy for days, though, and Mommy was busy. As such, the elder Kubrick had taken it upon herself to suffer through the Safari Zone for the sake of her siblings (and, much less nobly, for her own sanity).

"Alright, listen up," she told the pair of them before the entrance, bending to meet their eyes. "If either of you misbehave, we're —"

Xander cut in, "Leaving, we know —"

Lavinia's eyes hardened. "Interrupting me counts as misbehaving Xander. Do it again and I'll leave you outside with the warden."

Her little brother stuck his chin out, defiant. Proud, like most of the family. "But you just interrupted me! Also, you're not Mother."

A snap of her Trainer's fingers and Kalliope suddenly appeared just behind him. He swallowed.

"I get to interrupt and discipline you because I'm in charge. Is that clear?"

She held the boy's gaze until he lowered it, defeated, and mumbled an agreement. Next Lavinia turned to the younger child, who was all but vibrating with impatience, but nodded without complaint. A smart cookie, that one.

"Good. As I was saying, if you misbehave we're leaving. We've got three Balls, so you'll choose one Pokémon each. No, you can't catch them —" Zinnia, who had opened her mouth, shut it, "— but you can play with them. All clear?"

After they both agreed, she snapped her fingers again and the Hatterene teleported back to her side at once. "Alright, let's get going."

Lavinia straightened at last, took her siblings by the hands, and — cursing whoever had decided to show children the wonders of Pokémon — went inside.

Lavinia thought that the service here couldn't get any worse, but the owner outdoes herself yet again. She just pours the drink out and sets it down, without ice or even the offer of it, let alone the offer of filling the cup more. As a matter of fact, Lavi doesn't even know what has filled her cup, since the bartender didn't bother to say. The price tag, though, that she said; and she's far from cheap despite her awful manners. This place really is so bad as to be impressive.

What impresses her specifically is the fact that the Snake Pit is still open. Lavinia pauses halfway through reaching for her wallet as the puzzle pieces fall into place. Of course this is a front for crime. She's appalled at herself for taking several minutes to put something so simple, so thoroughly obvious, together. She pays the exact value owed without comment.

The teenager goes about putting her wallet away and using hand sanitizer before she lifts the glass off of the counter. The woman does not deserve thanks, and Lavinia suspects she won't miss them either.

This stuff had better be good enough to make up for... All the rest of this experience. It looks like whisky, so it should be strong as ordered. For all the owner's faults, underestimating a young client isn't one of them.

In spite — or maybe because — of the fact that she expects it'll burn going down, Lavinia downs the stuff in one go. It's exactly the sort of restorative she hoped it would be, she will give the woman that. Still, the glass hits the counter a little too hard one more time. Two can play at this little game, after all.

"I'll have two more doses," she says. Her tone is just this side of sardonic. "Put them on my tab for now. Assuming you work with tabs, that is."

Lavinia has loved the night sky for as long as she can remember, loved lying beneath it and trying to find patterns in the stars before she ever knew what they were or that there was much more out there. Now that she's grown up and studying Ultra Space, her love for the stars has not faded.

Quite the opposite, it's only gotten stronger, as gazing at them reminds her of the precious time she spent doing so with her family — with her Dad especially —, of camping trips and visits to Mossdeep Space Center.

Her backyard in Petalburg City is much humbler than a proper observatory, of course, and her old telescope needs replacing. In fact, it'd be easier to do this online.

It's nostalgia that brings her out to the porch instead. That, and longing. She hopes that her father is looking up at this same sky tonight, wherever he may be.
