The teenager doesn't need to be instructed on her breathing this time, if nothing else. Having an answer brings her down from the state of utter shock somewhat; enough for her to remember the nurse's reliance on this exercise to calm her. Calm her — as though she needs to be handled, like a child or a person losing their mind — yet even the indignity of that realization (she is having a perfectly reasonable reaction under the circumstances, thank you very much) doesn't quell her primal fear.

Iron Thorns. She's heard of it, of course she has fucking heard of it. She's studied it, even, along with the rest of the Paradoxes. She wishes that she didn't need to. She wishes that they didn't exist.

Although, she's at least armed with knowledge on the creatures. She's long given up on learning every little thing about common Pokémon — there are, what, a thousand of them cataloged now? too fucking many to bother with when she hates them —, but she still puts in the effort for the extraordinary ones.

They scare her the most, after all.

She once hoped that a rational, scientific approach to Pokémon would eradicate her fear. Unfortunately it has turned out to be too deeply entrenched, rooted in events she doesn't even recall properly that are at the core of her being all the same. At least science is still enough to mitigate the terror; if it wasn't she would be holed up at home, letting her mother handle this crisis despite the price she'd pay for causing it.

Knowledge is helpful now as well, thank her lucky stars. Lavinia can see the article she read on Iron Thorns with such perfect clarity that for a moment she feels as though she could reach out and touch the paper; and the words written there are a comfort in and of themselves: "Iron Thorns has been observed to prefer avoiding unnecessary fights."

When the nurse speaks again, Lavinia blinks at him as though coming out of a trance. Her lips part to say, "Wait, don’t," but no words leave them before the Ball is tossed. The being that comes out is both less cute and less small than she expected — wrong fucking evolutionary stage, of course —, but at least it is gone as quickly as it appeared. It was… Kind of Katharina to give her a heads up, too, even though they didn't let her get a word in edgewise. At least they tried.

Have they noticed? If they have, does it even matter? Her pride be damned, he's got an Iron Thorns and her little sister could be in mortal danger for all she knows. Now is really not the time to torture herself for the sake of her image — an image that she has already ruined anyway, since Kat feels the need to handle her.

Perhaps it's for the best that the Dewott calls out before she can say a word. She lets out a small gasp, heart lurching to her throat; whether from fear or from hope, she doesn't quite know.

"What do you mean, we scored?" Lavinia asks, her voice trembling. "Do you think he found Chryssy?"

Whatever the answer, the fact that Katharina sends his fucking Audino to check and keeps looking at her is nothing short of infuriating, enough so that her wrath drowns out the fear. It's invigorating; delightful, even. She feels like herself again.

Lavinia's self-possession restored, she sets her chin and looks at Kat with more harshness than a girl whose blood has drained from her face should be able to summon. "Listen, if I was going to have a heart attack it would have happened when your Audino came near me. We have to move."

With her face still hidden in the Espeon's soft fur Lavinia couldn't see his tail flicking in the usual way, but she could feel the air currents rippling through it. She could feel it bristling, too, and looked up with alarm plain on her expression; alarm which was soon replaced by pure terror when she saw the latest wild Pokémon: It was horrible, even more disgusting than a normal centipede due to its sheer height. It had to be about as tall as her four-year-old sister, a realization that sent chills down her spine.

Rather than shriek Lavinia screamed this time, with such force that it left her throat aching. She jumped to her feet at once, nearly tripping in her haste to put as much distance as possible between herself and the nightmare-inducing creature.

If there existed anything that unnerved Lavinia more than the simple presence of Pokémon, it was riding atop them. This being her mom's Charizard was the only thing that made it bearable, but the fact that Mel could drop her from a great height made it much less so. She didn't complain, though. She always did her best not to complain, and besides she'd asked to come; which she didn't expect would be allowed, in truth. Even now, she couldn't quite believe it.

Upon dismounting, Lavinia didn't even mind the weakness in her legs, as she was occupied looking up at the ruins with a growing sense of wonder. She'd loved field research in science camp, but getting to do it with her mother was — Right. The rules. Get a grip, Lavinia, she told herself in spite of the fact that she had remained primly composed. Now, she gazed downwards and gave a brief nod. "Of course, Mom."

Their relation aside, this was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to watch a great scientist in action. She had to perform better than ever before. So, even though she chafed at that last remark — she'd barely moved a muscle and already her mother was swearing by the holy goat —, Lavinia did not dispute it.

Teein... Oh, right, the Xatu — or is it Natu? Matu? Ugh, she can never keep Pokémon names straight; as a matter of fact, she's wanted to give Pokémon professors a piece of her mind about their naming choices for as long as she can recall. Back to the Xatu — or Natu, or whatever stupid name they came up with — at hand, though, Lavinia would rather it didn't come back at all. Ever. Yet she supposes it is helping with the search; for all the good that'll do when it's basically a glorified chicken. All the same she says, if only for the sake of appearances, "Yeah, I bet she will. Thanks for sending her out."

She feels much less inclined to keep up appearances when Katharina continues, but she still takes a deep breath and releases it slowly in just the way he instructed. "Absolutely sure," is all she says, with a slight edge. Thankfully, the nurse doesn't argue.

Except that she can't have shit. Sure, they're finally on the move, but Kat has also taken her question as an invitation. She wanted to be prepared just in case, not to have more Pokémon sprung on her, effective immediately. They're just trying to help, she reminds herself for the umpteenth time, though with each reminder she inches closer to snapping at them anyway. They might be trying, but they are not fucking helping. They're only slowing her search down and, even worse, scaring her.

Still... Dewott, that's the cute blue-and-white sea otter if she's got her similarly named evolutions right. Seriously, why do Pokémon Professors do this? Just to mess with her? Anyway, Dewott is like half the size of Audino, so if she could handle that thing treating her she will be fine. Poltchageist... That's the sentient tea, though whether it's the black tea or the matcha she doesn't remember. It makes no difference. Lavinia Asteria Kubrick is not afraid of a cup of tea. Not even a little.

Oh, for the holy goat's sake, Kat just keeps going. How many Pokémon do they even have? Hold on a second, what in the world is a Froggiursa? She may struggle to remember all Pokémon out there — although, to be honest, she also doesn't try very hard —, but she is absolutely sure she's never heard of a Froggiursa; not even from Cassandra, who has the most outlandish tastes ever. Setting the thought of her sister aside, Lavinia opens her mouth to inquire as politely as she can about this Froggiursa —

— only to be rendered momentarily speechless and gape at Katharina with her mouth half-open for what seems like an eternity. In reality, about five seconds transpire before she shuts her jaw and swallows dryly, unembarrassed for once. What made it feel like forever wasn't how stupid she looked, as she's hardly even taken notice of that, but rather the shock of what they've just said.

"Uh," Lavinia lets out, still not fully recovered, "what do you mean by that last part, Kat?" She's pale now, and her voice is an octave higher. She's afraid of a pastel, floppy-eared nurse's aide; and, fine, she's afraid of sentient tea too. She just cannot handle a creature that Katharina "loves Pokémon as much as every other person in this rotten world" Surname (they never mentioned it, she realizes only now) describes as "something we hopefully won't meet today". Why do they even have it if they can't control it?! She would like to ask him as much, but she can't even do that. All she's capable of is repeating herself, her tone even shriller: "What the fuck do you mean by that?!"

As far as Lavinia is concerned, it was generous to offer Gardevoir and Iron Valiant even a chance to back down. She did it for Chryssy's sake, of course, but still — Her whole body longs for an act of violence, yet she still wears velvet gloves. She yearns not so much to sic her Hatterene on these hateful beings as to lunge at them herself, though of course she knows rationally that she would be soundly defeated.

Instead she has been forced to beg; a plea that, while sincere, has done nothing to dissolve her fury. She is even more wrathful at the indignity of all of this, the sheer audacity of this Gardevoir to think — think — oh, she cannot dwell on it or she might weep again. That is the worst part, really, that she has no outlet whatsoever for all the ugly rage simmering in her; that she has to simply bear it, bear yet another indignity on top of all the ones that came before, today but also every day.

Lavinia has never voiced it, but she has long thought it unfair that one sister could get away with rebelling and the other could be a spoiled little princess while she had to be perfect. Could, because now Cassandra is gone and Chrysanthe is well past being simply spoiled. They are outright delusional — and they are gone, too.

When the Gardevoir appears in front of her she does not scream or flinch, but merely stares at this picture of perfect composure as though in defiance. She is a mess by comparison, of course, but for the first time in her life she does not feel ashamed. Yet she doesn't quite feel proud, either. She isn't sure what she feels, rage and love and sorrow and hatred all intertwined, and of course the terror. That, too. That most of all.

Then she feels something quite different, unbridled joy and love and trust, but there is fear there as well; fear of her. She saw that fear as clear as day in Chryssy's gaze, but to feel it as though it were her own… To say nothing of all the rest, all these pure and innocent feelings that could never — not in a million years — belong to her.

Make it stop, she wants to say, just as much as she wants Kalliope to attack the Gardevoir. Yet she neither pleads nor commands: Pleading once is one time too many, and commanding an attack would ruin her chances of seeing her sibling again forever.

"I told you," she says instead, quietly, the tears running down her face just as quietly, "I am a terrible person. You are right, I do not deserve Chryssy. If you could at least —"

[break][break]

Yet she is indeed terrible, selfish and proud to such an extent that the request for the Gardevoir to take her sister home lodges in her throat; that she can't quite relinquish her responsibility despite how badly she's failed at it. Instead Lavinia lowers her head and weeps, desperate but silent, her shoulders trembling with restrained sobs. She has no right to anything, not to Chryssy's love and certainly not to catharsis.

Suddenly the Espeon's tail whips against her legs once more and she looks up, startled, to see the Gardevoir holding its hand out. Her first thought is to shake her head — and here comes Linus' tail a third time, painfully now, as if to say Get a grip.

Lavinia releases a shuddering breath, the tears still falling. She doesn't bother to wipe them. Wide-eyed and pale with fear, she places her trembling hand in the Gardevoir's all the same.

There is something about the change in Katharina's expression that unnerves the teen even more, though she can't describe what that is. It's almost like the look that Linus gives her now and again: Not quite pity, but a sort of understanding — or, in Kat's case, the assumption of understanding. Yet for all that it's different, it rouses her temper much like pity does. What is she meant to snap at, though, when they only said "It's alright"? Nothing is alright; but, as she concluded before, arguing would only waste time.

She doesn't want to argue, anyhow. She wants to find Chrys. She wants to stop feeling like she's about to burst into tears any minute. She wants —

She wants this stupid fucking treatment to be over already. While she's grateful that Kat is narrating his actions, when she hears the nurse snort at what must seem like impatience it makes her want to scream. But then, it's not like anyone has ever understood aside from her mom. Mom, who will probably hate —

Lavinia swallows hard and says only, "Good", then nods at the warning. She grits her teeth and allows the nurse to turn her face without resistance — or at least without much resistance, as she can't help the tension in her muscles. Thankfully, Kat doesn't ask her to try either. Come to think of it, they haven't commented on her obvious discomfort at all… She hopes it stays that way, even as the words Heal Pulse cause a visible tremor to run through her.

The Move is warm, soothing even, and — just like that — this nightmare is over. If only the nightmare that is… well, literally everything else could end half as easily. Having opened her eyes at last, Lavinia blinks and puts a hand to the band-aid on her cheek.

The question snaps her out of her daze and she swiftly conceals her surprise at it, as well as the fact that she hasn't ordered her Pokémon to return at all.

"Not yet," she replies, thinking Get back here, and be quick for Linus and letting a rush of longing and urgency wash over her for Kalliope. "I'm sure they'll be back soon enough."

Shit. Too much longing, or else the fear overflowing. Her eyes water and she turns away from Kat, trying to be discreet about her sniffling. She should never have sent Linus away. If they spring even one more fucking Pokémon on her, she will —

"Sorry. Hold on a second," Lavinia mutters, still not looking at him. Hoping it'll seem like an attempt at casualness, she adds, "What other Pokémon do you have?"

Lavinia wishes this silly little thing could understand her question was rhetorical. The last fucking thing she needs is for a Pokémon to yap incomprehensibly at her, even if — especially if it's one of her sister's. She can't tell whether Doireann is berating or trying to comfort her, but she leans towards the former given what-is-its-name's willingness to battle Kalliope.

Nonetheless, the Mawile is obviously frantic and so she keeps from snapping at him. Oh, how she wishes she kept from snapping at Chrysanthe themself! The damage is done, though, and all that's left is to try and repair it if she can. If. The love between her and Chryssy — or rather, the love she bears for them — may not be enough. She was so focused on not losing her mother's affection that she didn't even think…

A flood of sobbing bursts from her. Mom has never turned her fury against her, nor did the eldest Kubrick think she would ever have reason to do so, but now —

Yet what right does Lavinia have to fear when she turned that very same fury on her sibling's gentle heart? She should have been gentle herself, damn it. She's always been gentle with Chryssy... even if it meant going against her nature. Now her mask has slipped and she's shattered the young one's fantasy of her, trampled on their innocence.

"This is for the best," she murmurs, more to herself than anything. "Who knows how long I could've kept this up? If anything, Chrys should have seen it coming. I have so much of our mother in me, but... I guess they're nothing if not self-deceptive."

When the Gardevoir reappears she's hopeful for a split second, only for said hope to be immediately dashed. This stupid creature left Chrys with only Munna and Hattena for defense, thinking their older sister a threat. The thought alone is enough for Lavinia to see red.

Sensing this Kalliope prepares for battle immediately, no less fierce despite being outnumbered. She's just like her Trainer; a realization which makes Lavinia chuckle, though it rings hollow.

All the wrath she's inherited from Calpurnia, she has passed on to her Forest Witch in turn. Sure, this vicious Hatterene is capable of impressive composure; but then, so is Lavinia. It's a miracle that Linus was spared this inheritance. He's much like Chrysanthe in that way.

And yet, no amount of self-reflection can keep her rage from overflowing at the sight of both Pokémon using Double Team against her. The anger is now so intense that she forgets to weep altogether, instead laughing the same deranged, ugly laugh as before.

Afterwards she tells them coldly, "What you lack in intelligence you make up for with brute force, I see." Whatever fear she might have felt is utterly meaningless now. If they want to strike her down... Let them try. "That's my sister, you overprotective fools. Who do you think you are to stand between me and my charge?"

[break][break]

She looks at the Hatterene and says, "Use Calm Mind, but wait for now." To the hostile Pokémon she adds, "Stand down or I will have Kalliope beat you both up, much as it'll upset Chryssy."

Linus' tail hits the back of her leg with surprising force and she whirls round to glower at the Espeon, silently demanding What do you want? She knows the answer, though, and just as silently she signals for Kalliope to retreat, yielding — though not completely. Never that.
