they walk

together for a while. sometimes, the sylveon tugs on her ribbons demanding attention, demanding to play. other times, the slurpuff jumps around so much she releases a strong sweet flavor that attracts a pokémon or two.

such is the case with the lilligant. the pretty flower lady comes to dance with them and maybe to get a treat or two. it's all fun and games until she bows her flower head and leaves, dancing as elegantly as she came.

it's suddenly

as if leo expects her to deal with the mightyena entirely on her own, which, if she turns her head to see what he's doing, seems to be a highly accurate impression. he's not even looking at the dog!

"okay," she starts, partly to her team but mostly just to calm herself down. leo is right: the mightyena is a dark-type pokémon, weak to fairy-type moves. and guess what? both of hers were fairy types and have fairy moves. she has the advantage here.

the mightyena growls, heightening rhian's sense of urgency. she doesn't want to hurt it, but she can't risk it hurting her pokémon or even leo either. "okay, let's use
play rough
!" she exclaims, before quickly changing her mind, "but don't play too roughly. if possible."

despite his trainer's confusing orders, the azumarill tackles the mightyena and catches it in a playful (but deadly?) grip. rhian's klefki approaches the scene and takes advantage of the azumarill's hold on the mightyena to give it a taste of his

draining kiss

. the mightyena struggles but finally it's put to sleep, and with that rhian can breathe again.

morbid? rhian

tilts her head, not quite understanding. she supposes fog can make sceneries look really pretty, as demonstrated in the many pieces of landscape photography posing as screensavers in the computers at work. she leaves it at that.

rhian spends a short part of the way humming to herself and keeping an eye out for any more aggressive wild encounters. there's a mawile running across a patch of tall grass and, sure enough, a liepard makes its appearance soon after, but this time it's not looking for a fight. thankfully.

she smiles at the man's appreciation, glad not to be the only one who felt the pokémon had been particularly violent.

"the wildlife here has been so aggressive today," she agrees, the anxiety that seeing so many fights gave her earlier slowly being pushed to the back of her mind. "i wasn't sure if cherub would be able to produce so many eggs, but i'm glad these are more tame." rhian laughs again.

the thought reminds her of what she was meaning to say before the liepard showed up. this is as good as opportunity as any to offer her blissey's services.

work on him, she notes. or, at least, not her type of puns. rhian stops to wonder what would bring a smile to the man's face while she waits for her blissey to return to her side. sadly, she can't come up with anything better than her already failed pun.

"for sure," comes her answer to the man's invitation. the more, the merrier— though perhaps not so much in their case.

peace keeps eluding them. even before they can resume their walk, a weepinbell shows up with an intent clearly malicious. the older man's vikavolt sweeps in again to save the day.

rhian's gaze lingers on the vikavolt, briefly wondering if it needs healing. after all, the weepinbell's hits weren't the only ones it had taken so far. she's set her mind on offering help when a place of interest is brought up and she loses her train of thought.

"oh?" she says, not really understanding the implications of visiting mt. pyre, though really, the mourning suit should have given it away. "i've passed by mt. pyre a few times now on my way to mauville, but never had the chance to go inside. is it a nice place to visit?"

this situation

is giving rhian deja vu. she still remembers struggling with her choice of pokémon the first time she was here. requesting grandt's assistance again feels like a no-brainer, but the fact leo brings out two of his pokémon —the pretty milotic she'd recently gotten for him included— makes her falter. should she bring her own azumarill into the mix, as well?

she clicks the azumarill's pokéball open before she can have second thoughts about it, and turns on her heels, ready to start. "should we wait for them to come back?" she asks, referring to the pokémon he'd sent out to scan the area.

her answer arrives halfway through her question, as leo steps in the direction opposite from the shore. rhian rushes to catch up.

"this place hasn't changed," she comments idly. granted, it has barely been a month since her first time in mossdeep. the area surrounding the space center is vast and spacious, as well as incredibly quiet. it's not hard to hear the approaching wild pokémon even before leo's scizor returns to warn them.

it's only a mightyena, but a mightyena's bite is letal enough to give anyone nightmares.

leo doesn't

understand. the only reason rhian's first time guarding this place was a success was almost exclusively because of her assigned partner, persephone amavi. true, her team may have grown alongside her as a trainer, slowly but surely, but this growth left her nowhere near confident enough in her abilities to fulfill the mission a second time. not at all.

before she can continue down that spiral of self-denigration, hope comes in the form of a pat and words of wisdom. a light at the end of the tunnel. he's right... she's nodding along while he talks. it would've all worked if not for the ending of leo's illuminated trolling.

her mouth hangs open, disbelief almost palpable in her voice. "aren't you gonna help me?" she frowns, clearly not expecting leo to simply step aside in a moment like this.

cherub is

a very persistent blissey. rhian is painfully aware of this fact when the pokémon doesn't lower her egg even after being politely rejected, and her attentions remain unhinged until after the man pats her head. she stops, tilts her head, and jumps back at the sudden attack.

the fight that unfolds afterwards feels a little... over-the-top, honestly, if only because rhian isn't fond of violence. she approaches the scene with a little uncertainty. out of the corner of her eye, she notices the fluffy coat of a whimsicott dash by in the opposite direction.

"cher, why don't you leave your egg near the vullaby for her to find when she wakes up?" she asks softly, pointing towards the fallen pokémon.

[break][break]

it's an idea that fits all their needs: they would be respecting the man's decision, not putting the egg to waste, and apologizing to the vullaby for the pain caused. she probably needed it more at this point.

the blissey nods and gets to the task. meanwhile, the man's question brings her attention back to him. "there's a house down the road owned by a very sweet couple. or should i say a berry sweet couple?" rhian giggles at her own joke. "i'm on my way to visit them."

she's no longer sure if he's sad, or angry, or simply unamused, but supposes she loses nothing by asking. "may i ask about you, sir?" if anything, she hopes her joke at least cheers him up a little, even if it comes as an afterthought rather than as reason for the pun.

short sleeves? nothing. behind them? rhian is giddy from expectation, already imagining how happy her boyfriend would be once he saw the gift she'd prepared for him. the milotic is excited too, if the way she wafts her tail is anything to go by.

ever since she'd told leo that she couldn't go with him to watch the milotic swarm, rhian had been feeling a little restless. a little guilty.

she had to make sure not to cross paths with him on her way to fortree, as well as in the lake itself, and on the way back. she had to make sure to arrive back home earlier than him, not to rise suspicion.

most importantly, rhian had to keep the milotic she'd managed to catch secret for the rest of yesterday and almost the entirety of today.

with each step he takes, her heart beats faster.

she's waiting on top of a rock for him. her feet flounder in the air as if underwater, and her arms jump into the air only when he's made finally made his way to the islet. "surprise!" she exclaims at last, expectant.

another failure

. leo's mention of her hometown manages to bring a smile to her face, but even that isn't enough to cheer her up after even cherub's eggs fail to make the pokémon mate. rhian was feeling pretty good about that impromptu idea of leo's, too. she was so certain that the blissey's eggs could make everything better.

with a sullen face, she says, "guess we're back to artificial insemination, then?"

the task ahead would be much more complicated than their attempts so far. it would require special equipment, time, and a specialized biologist to run smoothly. it would also be their last option.

rhian leaves instructions to the ranch owner's assistant on the equipment needed and promises to find a scientist to refer to them for the project. before leaving, they also offer to help her move all the pokémon back to their original corrals.

although she's not happy with their solution, rhian at least leaves the ranch with the knowledge that both she and her partner really tried.

for the pangoro couple isn't easy. the problem with space isn't exclusive to the enclosure they were looking at earlier, but to the entire ranch. somehow, the owner had managed to fill the ranch beyond its capacity and they were forced to ask the poor girl, now with the minccino in her arms but a bird's nest as hair, for help temporarily moving the mareep somewhere else.

then, the waiting game begins.

in order to give the pangoros the illusion that they are indeed alone and left to their own devices, they ask to be allowed into the surveillance room instead, where they could watch the events that transpired without being exposed to every detail of it.

the pangoros continue their pattern of marking the territory and rounding each other, but really that's pretty much it. rhian watches them with growing disappointment.

"what do we do now?" she's out of ideas.

rhian can prepare

lunch boxes alright, but sweets are a vastly different deal. bowls and salads are very easy to make — chop the ingredients, boil them depending on the ingredient in question, add some spices, mix. usually took fifteen, twenty minutes max, depending on what they felt like eating that day.

now, chocolates were something she had a bit of experience making. once. three years ago for a highschool senior leo. this time, though, she'd picked a more complex recipe to try, and rhian honestly couldn't make head or tail of it.

if the fact their oven was still brand new and never before touched isn't any indicator of how limited her scope at cooking is, she's not sure what would be.

rhian is balancing two cups in her hands when she hears leo come in. "good morning, darling," she greets with a beaming smile, turning from staring intently at the screen her rotom was showing her to face him. then, out of reflex, she puckers her lips for their obligatory good morning kiss.

with two

new pokémon by her side, rhian doesn't think she can ask for more. she still has one safari ball left and over half of the sweets she brought in her bag, waiting to be fed to whoever wanted them, but she's leaning towards simply feeding them to pokémon rather than using them as bait. after all, she's not sure she and leo make enough money to raise so many.

they pass by a hill covered in flowers next. she thinks she catches movement out of the corner of her eye and decides to leave a couple of jelly beans behind. whatever pokémon hid under the roses, they'd have a tasty little treat to share with a friend.
