the woman

offers her hand nevertheless, and rhian catches herself in a dilemma. she obviously can't refuse it, but the fact her hands are still wet make for a troubling detail. she at least tries to shake some of the water off to the side before presenting it to isra, all the while wishing her hands could just magically dry themselves.

the blush that follows isra's quip is light but very noticeable, if only because rhian takes it in silent embarrassment.

there's no way to prepare her for the words of praise. rhian smiles, the blush still there but turning into a proud grin. "you think so?" she asks, surprised but clearly pleased at the compliment.

"that'd be great! i'm sure they will be very happy to see each other again. i promise to do my best to ensure the azumarill is in its best behavior, too!"

rhian is beaming and it's not only because she's thinking of the happiness of their two newly caught pokémon. if isra is willing to see her again, it means she really was forgiven for the unfortunate way their first meeting started.

inevitably, the girl starts trying too hard to please. "i'm currently living in lilycove because of my job, which isn't too far from here. i'd be happy to come down whenever you have the time; or wherever you want to meet, really."

the banette is quite an interesting pokémon. rhian may not do to well with a typing as spoopy as ghost, but as a scientist (in training, don't forget), she can't help but be intrigued by the way it uses shadows as a third appendage. she doesn't think science has been able to explain that one yet. either that, or she hasn't gotten around to them in her lessons.

"hey there, imp." she waves at it—him, she learns—from a safe distance. his consequent posing has her giggling. "he's so lively. i'm sure he's great at cheering you up when you're down."

again she's back with phrases that could be wrongly interpreted, except this time she doesn't rectify herself. she doesn't realize it. after all, everyone has their shares of ups and downs.

technically,

as part of the league, she is obligated to help out when trouble arises. in practice, though, she usually spent her time inside a lab, collaborating to the protection of the region through research. naturally, when trouble actually does arise while on duty, rhian feels equal parts exhilarated and terrified.

she tails after arian as quickly as she can back the way they came from: towards town. "grandt," she calls her klefki. the quarrel is happening way too close to fallarbor, making it a latent threat to the civilians residing in it. with the klefki's

, they could at least make sure the pokémon didn't take their fight too far inside.

by the time rhian catches up, there fortunately isn't much of a fight left. the seviper and haunter already have both wild pokémon under control, and all that's left is to apprehend them. rhian grabs a pokéball from her own supply and tosses it at the already debilitated sword pokémon before it can get up.

the pokéball is still in midair when she notices the doublade slowly awaken. first one blade rises, then the other— "grandt, use draining kiss!" she blurts out the first thing that comes to mind. the klefki hurries to fulfill his trainer's command, managing to weaken the doublade just enough that the pokéball hits.

expectantly, she waits for the outcome of their efforts.

when all was done and things calmed down, she'd tell the gym leader "that was exciting."

rhian is excited

to be visiting the mossdeep space center. the first time she was here, it was as part of a mission. this time, leo was invited to the facility in order to give the other scientists working there his opinion as a physicist on some complicated physics stuff. that had been as much as rhian managed to gather.

"i'm terribly sorry, mr. vermilion. that project has been temporarily put on hold. we'll make sure to call you back as soon as we can continue experiments, so please do stay in contact."

the scientist's words are dumped on them like a bucket of cold water. "but—but we already came all the way here! can't you make an exception?" disappointment is written all over her face.

a spark of recognition. the attention she garners thanks to her loud (perhaps a little too loud) complaint surprises the scientist. "aren't you the girl who came from the league the other day? we'd like you to help us securing the area."

rhian blinks. "again?"

"oh, this is perfect timing, really! how did you know we needed help? we didn't make the request yet! truly high quality service. i'll leave it in your capable hands." the man doesn't stay to listen. "mr. vermilion," he adds with a nod before rushing back inside.

for a second. "there was one case, actually, but it's odd," she begins. arms crossed on her chest, she lets her mind wander. "see, female pangoros have a very long menstrual cycle. the breeding happened around this time of the year, which is when their fertile window begins. i can only assume that's why we were called— the ranch owner was hoping the season would make them mate, but it didn't."

while leo takes his turn to do some research of his own online, rhian allows herself a few seconds to watch him. despite hating everything about this mission they were undertaking, leo still found it in himself to leave his frustrations aside and put his all into making things work.

like a charm, and rhian doesn't even notice it. she turns to face him with eyes like daggers. with his hug serving doubly as a prison, rhian limits herself to sticking her tongue out and saying "you're still a pangoro!" before she, too, starts to laugh at the goofy childishness of their argument.

i like it! i'd love a big brother figure for rhian, and she'd definitely be happy to help if they keep running into each other (or maybe more immediately depending on how their current thread goes!) despite not being able to relate to the loss of a pokémon, she did lose her mom as a child and technically her dad only recently, so i imagine she could have very few mature moments when talking about grieving.

right now i'm hadcanoning that rhian thinks thomas is much older than he actually is because of his current mood and look, hence why she addresses him so formally. i think it'd be funny to thread out her finally finding out he's only a few years older down the line!

black attire poses a stark contrast against rhian's own pastel-colored hoodie and light blue jeans. she doesn't recognize him, but the somber expression on his face speaks enough on its own for her to tell he's in pain. that, and the bottle in his hand.

rhian's blissey senses it, too. in fact, blissey's ability to actually sense sadness in others makes her feel it so much that she abandons her trainer's side to look after him. the pokémon tugs at his clothes and offers an egg.

rhian doubts

using the same spot so soon would work, so she and her new friend slurpuff make their way farther inside the safari. on their way, she tries to come up with a nice nickname for her team's new addition. she couldn't call her slurpuff forever, right?

"did anyone ever tell you that you look a lot like cotton candy?" rhian can picture the delicious treat right next to the pokémon. they'd look identical.

the slurpuff doesn't reply, for obvious reasons. instead, it stares straight ahead. rhian follows her pokémon's gaze.

the first thing that her eyes rest on are the sylveon's long, flowing ribbons, so characteristic of the species. "those ribbons look a lot like mine, wouldn't you say?" she giggles, spinning on her heels once to showcase said ribbons.

the sylveon is interested in rhian's ribbons, too. it approaches, sparkly blue eyes fixated on her hair and on her dress, both sporting matching ribbons. it circles around her, as if inspecting her, and waves its ribbons again.

bending down, rhian places her hands on her knees and smiles at the sylveon. "they're really pretty."

it's all the invitation the sylveon needs to inch closer and tackle her. it's all playful fun, she realizes. rhian rolls on the grass, laughing, as the sylveon pokes its head inside her bag looking for tasty treats.

she watches the sylveon with amused eyes. when it's about to take its third poké puff, she raises a hand for it to stop. "as much as i love sweets too, it's not healthy to eat so many at once!"

the sylveon seems to understand. though disappointed, it nods. she smiles. "what do you say to this, though?" rhian takes a second safari ball out, and offers it to the sylveon.

she's about to get caught. rhian shakes her head vehemently and dreads the moment leo's hand reaches her face, lifting it up to him for inspection.

"i'm not crying," she denies as soon as the words exit leo's mouth. her tone kind of gives her away, though. another "i'm really not!" is all she can think to do anymore before she gives up trying to pretend.

but leo thinks it's the movie that has her like this, and rhian doesn't mind keeping up the pretense. it's better than making him feel guilty about decisions made in the past.

it's just the movie. the way the protagonist is caught between her duty to her family and her love of her life is just too cruel, as is the way he pushes her away in his attempt at making the decision easier for her, despite it not being what either of them wants.

"no such thing as breaks for a researcher. especially for an assistant." far from complaining, rhian's tone reflects pride in her job. she may not be a full-fledged scientist yet, but her work with head scientist lane had allowed her to learn things she wouldn't have been able to otherwise, as only a trainee.

rhian's eyes widen at his admission. if the pokémon he looked for was eluding him, it must be a really rare one indeed.

"we have reason to believe mt. chimney is turning not only ordinary rock into lava, but also evolutionary stones stuck near its magma chamber. it would be ideal if i can spot any complete evolutionary stones, of course, but the samples i'm looking for are of ash and hardened lava. we want to examine if any properties from the evolutionary stones remain in them."

doesn't scare the pokémon, it sure scares rhian. her hold on the azumarill falters for a moment, and she's lucky the banette goes for it first or she's certain it would've wrenched itself out of her arms and gone for the audino again.

to rhian's surprise, their positions have switched somehow. it's now the azumarill holding tightly on to her. perhaps... a little too tightly. her hands reach up to pet the water pokémon softly. "it's okay now," she soothes.

the azumarill is still a bit wary, but the treat is too tempting a gift not to accept. while the pokémon happily eat their treats, rhian lets herself relax again. "you're a lifesaver," she thanks the woman.

a thought occurs to her. they never did introduce themselves, did they? "oh! i'm rhian by the way. i'd offer a hand to shake, but as you can see i'm kind of soaked." she smiles, not really bothered by it—at least, not for herself. "pleasure to meet you."
