these toxtricities don't seem like bad guys. that is, until she lowers her gaze and spots the poison oozing out from their bodies, or perhaps their bodies are the ones oozing out from the poison. a sound akin to a growl pulls her back from her thoughts, and vera decides it's no time to get philosophical about a pokémon's typing.

"you're right," she nods in her heliolisk's direction. and, before anything else can be said, a wave of poison starts to move their way. uh-oh. "incoming!"

the frills around the heliolisk's neck are extended in a parasol-like fashion. from his mouth, a surge of

energy is thrown directly at the wave.

the electrike had been in the middle of mouthing a grudging "i guess," when the slight self-deprecating comment made its way to his ears. uh-oh. can time be rewinded, please? is that a thing that can be done? syrup did not sign up for this. he's not qualified.

and you know what? that's not even the end of it. on top of having to deal with an alolan vulpix doubting herself, syrup received another hit: a very pointed complaint. he freezes and a moment passes before he opens his mouth with an answer.

"i don't try to be," he says. when it tastes like truth, he finally accepts the idea that maybe he really doesn't hate her. however, he deosn't know what else to say and it's kind of awkward. to escape from the awkwardness, he adds a very soft, almost inaudible "i'm sorry."

vera is caught off-guard, but it doesn't show in the way she answers. any sort of acknowledgement of having remembered virgil’s favorite remains entirely tacit. “i can’t possibly eat an entire pizza by myself,” she explains simply, a small smile on her lips. the familial scene is completed by taking a napkin from the table to be laid primly on her lap.

except. mention of her dad’s plans succeeds in ruining the moment. “i’ve stopped trying to figure him out years ago.” she shrugs and props one arm up on the table, shattering the image of propriety she’d so carefully crafted only seconds ago.

syrup's expression softens despite azalea's own volatile mood. he's still offended, and still angry, and still blames her for the accident — but his words don't have that same bite from before. "well, have i ever hurt you?" he almost asks her why she feels the need to protect herself, but stops short. that would make it look as if he doesn't outright hate her (which might be only a little bit true but mostly not).

the electrike notices the ice-type's approach only because of the chill that runs through him, following it. he wasn't lying when he said her presence was too cold. "why would i even want to be pretty like you anyways?" he rolls his eyes, not realizing the indirect compliment he's offering.

despite both being canids, their relationship is more akin to that of a cat and a dog. vulpix and electrike refuse to get along, and it worries their owners beyond measure. their last disagreement had ended in many important work-related papers being lost to the wind as ashes. desperate times call for desperate measures.

the warning sign is immediately followed by a

from an overly affectionate pichu. vera freezes. paralyzed. she's always been weak to pichus, and this one is no exception to the rule. the baby is just so

charming

. she laughs and hugs the pichu back, before it burrows itself in the space between her and the zebstrika. the pichu has already created room for itself in the party. vera doesn't object it.

"let's keep going, opéra." the end of this foresty area is in sight, and a new plain for them to run in looks quite tempting. "we can speed up," she says, tightening her hold on the pichu in a protective movement.

the next pokémon they stumble upon is hard not to see from a good distance away. its presence is unnatural. it has the hairs on vera's skin stand up. "static?" she wonders aloud. it couldn't be the magnezone's, or her zebstrika's for that matter. "there must be someone else around here," she concludes, turning quickly to scan the area immediately around her.
