her eyes follow selena's finger curiously and land on one of the newer buildings in the city. the league symbol does give it a lot of notoriety. vera has seen it before, of course, though never visited. "we're pretty much neighbors," she answers, pointing towards a different league building, much farther from the beach and in fact barely visible from where the women currently stand. laughter erupts after a few seconds at her terrible joke.

"let's get to the wailord first, though. she must be in pain."

as if sensing the shift in their attention, the wailord emits a long moan that grows thinner as time passes. that does not sound good. vera turns to her ampharos, thinking that introductions would have to wait. her expression is apologetic as she says, "your mane may get wet. i'm sorry, anise."

the ampharos seems crestfallen for a second, but the disappointment passes after a heartbeat. she'll just have to ask remington for a hand to give it a proper dry it later. she mega evolves, and her first action is to place a

light screen

on the field. not for them, but for the wailord. it wouldn't do to accidentally hurt the pokémon while trying to help.

vera nods appreciatively when she's included in his brainstorming. maybe her persistence had gotten through to him. "i'm just back from the safari, actually, and there's no fire types in the rotation this time." in her distraction, vera's hand taps one of the pokéballs under her cardigan. "the castforms, maybe, but it's not that sunny at the moment."

that really does leave only the explanation of an intentionally created fire left.

"if it was indeed a person, they must be somewhere nearby. a fire this big would have been impossible to start and leave so suddenly. but where?" even if the source of the fire had been human, vera has no way of pinpointing the exact direction they'd gone off to. a beat passes before her eyes widen in realization. only a small exclamation is missing from her reaction.

both stunfisk and alolan graveler are recalled into their pokéballs, their trainer oblivious to the croconaw's hungry stare (sorry, croconaw). a considerably bigger magnezone then takes their place. with its

magnet pull

ability, pretzel would be able to find any tools the arsonist may have used.

at the boy's question, her gaze is inevitably redirected towards the fire. "hmm," she hums pensively, before returning her attention to his words. like two magnets of the same polarity, they never come together. the moment coincides with his decision to walk away. before she knows it, he's guiding his croconaw around one side of the fire.

"let's go the other way, guys," she calls her own pokémon to attention. as rude as the boy had been, his strategy was sound: trap the fire so that it can't keep expanding.

the stunfisk goes first, creating the baseline for their eventual fire line. behind her, the graveler puts some distance between the line they're creating and the many, many trees around it with partitioned

rock blasts

. this way, the fire would have no more fuel to grow even when left alone.

flammable material remains separate from the circle of elevated rock. the small group continues. at some point, vera's eyes land on the same bundle of ginger hair that she's met before. "hey," she greets again. the smile on her lips betrays her first impression of him. or maybe it is due to said impression, in a sense, that her smile is cheerful.

the fire starts so close to the safari zone, it could easily endanger the fauna inside. artificially placed and with only a few weeks to familiarize themselves with the area, the pokémon in the safari would have no escape route to follow. vera has no doubt that things would get really messy, if not handled promptly. she'll have to step in while reinforcements arrive.

two pokéballs, two clicks. an alolan graveler and a stunfisk appear right next to the croconaw and his trainer. "pudding, truffle, split to cover more ground!"

the stunfisk slides on the already dampened earth (thanks, croconaw), turning everywhere she goes into

muddy water

. perhaps not as clean a job as a water pump, but it would have to do for their immediate purposes. meanwhile, the alolan graveler flattens the less humid ground with

"the fire's so strong already. where did it even come from?" she muses aloud. with her pokémon on the job, vera finally affords a glance at the boy whose side she's unconsciously run to. "hey, are you okay?"

riding atop her zebstrika, vera feels lighter and faster than light itself. of course, neither is this impression objective nor is her current speed the fastest she's ever gone. there's just something about the constant movement cutting at the breeze that feels different, threatening even, versus her vikavolts' flight.

as the road becomes less defined and vegetation grows more abundant, they are forced to slow down. despite the loss of franctic exhilaration, the change is welcome, as it allows them to take in their surroundings.

"it's not bulging," comes vera's very obvious observation on the current state of the metallic door. she steps back, trying to get a better view of the locked entrance. the surface is so smooth she can see her reflection. whoever designed it went through considerble lengths to keep it closed to outside eyes.

when vera was told of her new assignment, she ewas a little excited about being sent back to field. when she read the details on the file too innocently placed on her desk, her stomach turned. but it was too late to back down, so she followed through, which led her across the entire region to none other than rustboro city with a complete stranger.

vera first saw the wailord from the twenty-first floor of the league's science department in lilycove, twenty one minutes ago. odd coincidence, but nothing to dwell on when the elephant in the room is, well, a whale stranded on the beach. the speed of her feet on the sand reflect this urgency, as well as her choice of pokémon. at some point while she descended to the beach, she'd called for the help of her ampharos, anise.

there's nothing she wants to do more than comfort the wailing wailord, but she knows her hand would feel like no more than a tickle for this queen of the seas. instead, she scans the area for the off-chance of finding any other stranded marine creature. luckily, this big old blue is the only one. what she does find, though, is a familiar mane of pink hair dancing in the wind.

there is a tilt of vera's head that kyle wouldn't get to see when he quickens his pace. were those stutters she heard? she hums as she catches up to him and his dragalge. "abandoned?" she suggests, leaning forward. stating the obvious is meant to obtain a reaction out of him - hopefully of the laughing kind, to go with her small chuckle.

"i think we can make these work for a bit." her eyes move from inspecting the escalator to her magnezone's hovering body. "pretzel, could you give it a zap for us?"

the magnets on each side of the magnezone are raised. they take a moment to aim a

zap cannon

that lands with a metallic sound very similar to that of an electronic device breaking. or cogs turning. either or. another second passes. the magnezone turns in a half circle, in their direction, and that's the precise moment in which the escalator remembers how to move.

"our ride's ready," she supposes.

the finger on her chin precedes any answer she could offer, even though it is completely unnecessary. she's ready for the question; has been asked it a handful of times. "oh, not all. only most." her smile is cheeky as she adds, "i don't recommend it unless you have a pastry chef readily available."

a soft glowing light washes over all pokémon involved in the mini accident. of course the healer deserves a timely "thank you, chansey!"

vera may have missed the sawsbuck if not for utah's exclamation. the girl is understandably excited, and vera doesn't mind waiting for a swift capture. meanwhile, she rounds up her yamper, eevee, and new eevee with a few instructions to be on their best behavior.

"the leaves on its antlers were turning orange. that time of year already, huh?" she'd point out upon utah's return. perhaps unconsciously, the ginger had planned an autumn vegetable curry that'd fit the coming season perfectly: a warm and fragrant indian-styled dish.

the curry pot couldn't be more than ten minutes away at a comfortable pace, but those ten minutes would turn into fifteen with the appearance of yet more pokémon, much to their chagrin (or fortune, depending).

orange and pink strokes paint the horizon, followed by a thin layer of gold. slateport looks like a work of art, now more than ever—life inspires art, and art inspires life. spotted along the surface, specks of white twinkle like stars in the night sky. from afar, they could be easily confused as reflections of the firmament. they are not. it is a procession of pokémon that

illuminates

the way, and it starts all the way up in the city's outskirts. the trip begins with a full house, guided by another set of land pokémon.

the crescent that makes up taffy’s tail undulates, and her body is propelled forward. the two spheres of light attached to her head twinkle brightly. a third sphere appears, an

electrified ball

that slowly begins to fade as it progresses. the bundle of light swims even faster to alert the pokémon up ahead of the incoming train.

taffy follows the structure of the translucent underwater tunnel with swift, confident movements. matching the speed of the train is not a priority, as their collective light spans multiple miles.
