Now this was a feeling he'd missed: the wind in his hair, the adrenaline in his veins, and nothing on his mind but the images of buildings and bystanders evaporating exponentially in the periphery of his vision.[break][break]

Ever since 'the incident' (what a fucking joke of a name, but what else was he supposed to call it in the eternal aftermath?), everything had felt slow. Obviously, walking had become something of a task by itself, with running completely taken off the table – crazy the things you take for granted – but it'd felt as though life itself had slowed down to a crawl since his days in Kanto had ended and those in Hoenn had begun. Slow recovery, slow designs, slow thoughts, slowed down, down, down. Nikki hadn't even thought about the speed of a bike since he'd wrecked his back home, and that was years ago. Seeing them lined up, glossy, probably more expensive than all the money he'd make in his life had initially only been another reminder of fonder days lost behind. It wasn't until he saw just how much of a jackass the owner of this one in particular was that he'd had the bright idea to steal it. If you can't beat 'em, after all, rob 'em blind. Retribution.[break][break]

And what glorious retribution indeed. Shitface McMike was probably blowing a gasket halfway across town right now, but here in the moment, Nikki was living out old daydreams and forgetting what it felt like to feel trapped in one's own tired body. It felt great. And precisely because it felt great, it all had to come to a terrible halt.[break][break]

What was that up ahead? A tree? A person? Either way: Do not pass 'Go', do not collect $200.[break][break]

Nikki should know better by now than to ask how he gets roped into this stuff... but alas, there he sits at the edge of the boat (the... gun whale, he thinks they called it?), attempting to overwrite his anxiety with stoicism, wondering what he's gotten himself into and the more pressing question of why.[break][break]

The alternative is pondering how ridiculous he looks in his wet suit. The alternative alternative is thinking about how his mission partner somehow ended up being not only an Elite Four member, but a Silph, just to add insult to injury. Even had he not had his concerns about the work given his personal circumstances – the only pacifying thought in his brain is that diving in the ocean may be like spicy pool therapy, which really isn't all that pacifying at all – the moment he laid eyes on the woman, he knew this mission was doomed to failure. Not that she wasn't capable, obviously. Just that Lady Luck was frowning on them both from the very start.[break][break]

His brooding, as his mother would have called it does end up having its own perk: there's a speckle of pink on the horizon that he sees even before his Clawitzer scuttles to attention at his side. “look alive,” the hitman calls over his shoulder, inwardly grateful that his words don't tremor the way his hands do. Showtime.

He's not the barhopping type. Never has been, really. Even as a teenaged radical taunting every form of rebellion writhing under the sun, reeking counters in low lit rooms were just never his scene, traded in for rainy street corners or, if he was really that desperate, the hallway out from his dealer's one bedroom apartment. Alcohol just wasn't the escape of choice: not then, not now. Tonight, he loiters only in the hopes of cooling off, escaping the night's heat into some much-needed AC. (Tragically, packed in tight light Wishiwashi, body heat brushing body heat, it's hardly much better.) Tonight, he drinks only because he's been kicked out of places like this before for not handing over his pocket change – these days, that's about all he's got. Oh well.[break][break]

Nikki's just begun nursing his drink (cheapest on the menu, and it shows) when the woman sat nearest to him at the bar breaks her silence, as well as the lull that had swept over the room around them: Better now than... The suddenness of the noise and the lack of context draw his gaze up to her before it follows her own to the screen tilted down at them from above. 'Politician' in bold letter's got him sneering in an instant, but the 'dead' part sparks up something almost joy not long after.[break][break]

“Assuming they'd ever actually lock 'im up.” Money is power, after all, and the courts hang on strings, marionettes of whoever's got the most of it to throw around.[break][break]

Normally, there's not even a question of whether he's going to open his mouth to the nearest stranger – of course not, why would he? – but what can he say? It's not like he disagrees with her, and that doesn't happen every day. Sardonically, with a smile as poisoned as it is crooked, he asks, “Not sorry for a dead man?”

was kicked out of the family at the age of sixteen, and has never looked back once. nikki's denounced his heritage and all of the perks that came with it, and refuses to answer to the name he was given at birth.


wet and raving the needle keeps calling me back
has suffered on-and-off with heroin addiction, having started on the needle prior even to his expulsion from his family home. his near-death experience and the long hospital stay that followed have helped keep him clean, and he's mostly kept it up during his time in hoenn, but there are nights when the need burns brighter than a blazing star, and he fears the day he finally slips back into unwanted old habits.


the barrier only i embrace
beneath the partial facade of indifference and wrath, nikki is a genuinely well-intentioned person who cannot stand for what he perceives as suffered injustice. his motivations for aligning with rocket were to take down the league's supposedly 'corrupt' rule over kanto, and his motivations for defecting were much the same: corruption, judgment, the works. caught between a severe distrust of society and the people within it and a deep need to help those in... well, need.

You're twenty-two when they kill you: eye for eye, blood for blood, everything that ever stitched together the Nicklaus name (one you had tried and tried to discard already yourself) spent and oozing out onto concrete filth.[break][break]

It isn't that you weren't expecting this. The valiant always put their lives on the line for their beliefs; there is no more heroic a fall than that of a martyr. That in the name of another. More morbidly, perhaps, the chance that they had already caught onto you before you had ever caught onto them had been a possibility you'd been tiptoeing around for weeks now. Retribution is the due of a traitor (to them, liars, murderers, but never to your own ideals). It just wasn't supposed to come so soon.[break][break]

Tore a hole through your chest – once, twice, again and again. For good measure. They don't wait to hear your heart falter, because what chance is there that it won't?[break][break]

All things come around eventually. A killer like you, murdered just as he'd taken life after life. Rocket, too, will fall to the League in some grand stand of irony – eventually. To the League, probably. To you, if you have your way.[break][break]

It's in this manner, then, that every misfortune ever placed upon you comes rushing back to pay their own dues – luck you've never had, and luck you wished would have come before your former partner stuck you through like a pin cushion. First: she finds you before your heart really does start to falter; second: they don't recognize you, or perhaps don't care that you were Rocket until the moment they found you postmortem; third: you end up a dead man walking.[break][break]

Trying to, anyway.[break][break]

You're lucky, they tell you through therapy, feet like dead weights, tears in the corners of your eyes, that you can get up on your feet at all anymore. Lucky you're even alive goes unsaid, hanging like a pendulum in every conversation all the same. It gets better, just as they said it would, but it never gets good; the skin of your torso is a ragged testament to your sloth and your failure. Rocket has already moved onto greener pastures across the sea, and you're still pushing your weight onto something else. (But you were already too slow, once. Not again. Not this time.)[break][break]

It's too soon too leave – too late to stay. Hoenn creeps up on the horizon, and you fail to stifle the beast kept behind your teeth. (Retribution due for traitors.)

mistakes you make, you take to your grave

+ son of a (corrupt) league councilman back in his home region. goes only by "nikki" in an attempt to distance himself from his family and roots.[break]
+ former rocket member. specialized in (and was quite good at) stealth-focused murders, and not much else.[break]
+ attacked and left for dead upon (correct) suspicions of wanting to bail the team. despite having mostly, and quite miraculously recovered, he still struggles to walk without the aid of a cane.[break]
+ absolutely despises the league. joined rocket originally in hopes of tearing them down, only to realize that rocket was - somehow - worse. allies with them only because of their common enemy; would still probably try to stab a gym leader or councilman if given the opportunity.[break]
+ came to hoenn pretty much exclusively to pay back some dues. off his hitman game because of his condition, but he thinks he's got the element of surprise. who expects a dead man to come storming into your home, right?
