Orion sees the desert as a wonderful excuse to explore an arid wasteland such as Hoenn's desert without risk of heatstroke or blinding sandstorms. Well, there might still be a sandstorm, but a virtual sandstorm was far better than a real one. The last time he'd ventured into the desert in real life, he'd been finding sand in weird places for days.[break][break]

He'd been doing some vigorous grinding and had unlocked a couple more moves, eager now to try them out on the various mobs roaming the desert wastes.

"Slateport, huh? I'm in Lilycove right now, I'm—" He gives a little huff of embarrassed laughter. In reality, he subconsciously touches the back of his neck, the movement of the controller causing Lykos to lift and drop his arm in similar fashion. "I'm actually at the office right now, but I'm off work."[break][break]

He'd brought his system along in order to pass the time during breaks. The internet here boasted a more solid connection than his Fortree apartment, so he'd take advantage of it where he could. This game was pretty fun.[break][break]

"Yeah, seems like everyone's playing. I know I'm not the only one in the office that plays."[break][break]

He'd been seeing the Elite Four around more often lately, something to do with their training, and that had reminded him that kyle lopez was quite an accomplished gamer. He'd yet to bump into the man in-game that he knew of, and hadn't bumped into him outside of work to ask about his tag.[break][break]

"Sure, we can do that. I don't think we can actually hurt each other in the tutorial zone, but that's actually great for the purpose of practicing our aim and stuff."[break][break]

Using his Bounce attack, he launches himself into the air and lands on the other side of the field, offering a playful bow to Ruby in a silent invitation for her to begin.

Anxious as he'd been about having his soul stolen the first time he'd reached out for the blade, it had turned out to be less unpleasant than he'd have thought. The respawn was quick and easy and didn't seem to carry any negative side effects.[break][break]

With that in mind, there's no hesitation this time as he saunters up to the stone.[break][break]

Avery manages to deflect the Zap Cannon, but Orion's relief is short-lived. Though he's able to pin down the closer ranger, another arrow flies dangerously close to his face and his muscles tense, his grip tight on the controllers.[break][break]

Though the ranger with his pistol trained on Avery claims they'll have mercy if a toll is paid, the fact that he fires right after leaves Orion unconvinced.[break][break]

Having turned his attention to the direction where the missed shot had fired from, he spots the other offender. Far away enough that it'd hopefully take some time for him to catch up, and the closer one couldn't give chase outside of Orion's range...[break][break]

"Go," he says to Avery, "I'll cover you."[break][break]

It'll mean his death, but his urge to protect extends from reality and into the game. Besides, Avery's the one with the egg. If he can keep these guys distracted for long enough to give her distance...[break][break]

Seeing as the ranger in front of him seemed to use a lot of electricity, he holds off on using his own electric-type attack and instead fires off another Spirit Shackle at FERNANDO SILPH, relying on his STAB bonus.[break][break]

"That's right," he recalls, nodding. "Honestly, I saw 'psychic' for mages and stopped reading there, I was already sold, but I ended up going ranger in the end."[break][break]

Apparently he knows this girl outside of the game, and he tilts his head as if trying to scrutinize the voice. He feels a little bad for not recognizing it; should he? It had the edge of familiarity to it, but it was something he struggled to place.[break][break]

She doesn't look too offended. In fact, she seems positively delighted as her avatar hops back and grins at him. That's good, right?[break][break]

Three guesses. His competitive nature kicks in. How many girls did he know outside of the Rangers?[break][break]

There's a big crowd around the sword and he watches them fall one by one. He doesn't like his odds. But, hey, you respawned in this game. Risk versus reward, right?[break][break]

Orion laughs in response to Annie's tirade, the sound prompting his avatar to throw his head back with an exaggerated guffaw.[break][break]

She suggests a potential return to the tutorial, and Orion's avatar nods along with him as the man struggles to navigate the interface. It was well-done and not intrusive for the most part, but difficult to grasp for someone who'd never played an MMO before, let alone one in virtual reality.[break][break]

"... oh, there it is."[break][break]

He selects a facepalm emote, which seems applicable, and chuckles when he hears the audible thunk of his character's hand connecting with its forehead.[break][break]

"Yeah, I'm starting to think the tutorial's not a bad idea. I bet they tell you to sit next to fires and everything."

It dulls as the door opens, and he smiles at Avery.[break][break]

She calls him sir, which makes him blush, and he laughs to counteract how flustered he feels as he follows her inside.[break][break]

"No, no, this was a relatively spontaneous visit. I was never in the area before, but I spend a lot of time here with the new job, so — oh, hello. Look at your fur!"[break][break]

He notices the Pachirisu flitting eagerly about their feet, recognizing its mannerisms rather than the once-blue hue of its fur. It was no surprise that Avery, of all people, had somehow managed to acquire yet another pink rodent.[break][break]

Bending down to give the Pachirisu a friendly pat, he adjusts his grip on the egg as he stands and cradles it in front of him.[break][break]

"Here about this, actually. I've never dealt with an egg before, figured you might know what to do..."

Annie refers to the campfire system as 'doo-doo-ass' which, while certainly not the words he would have chosen, perfectly sums up Orion's feelings toward it. For a game so advanced, you'd think they'd focus on fun rather than bullshit realism.[break][break]

"I spent three hours making my avatar look nothing like me," he counters, with a dry laugh. "Arceus, this is dumb. How are we supposed to—"[break][break]

—heal if we can't even light a fire? The rest of the question is finished only in his head, for the voice-chat cuts off there as Orion falls deathly silent. Lykos stares blankly into the flames, arms held stiff in a clear indication that Orion was, in real life, also staring at the flickering blaze. His expression of anger doesn't translate onto his avatar.[break][break]

"How did you do that?" he asks of the emote wheel. "Because my character doesn't look nearly annoyed enough. Seriously? Seriously? That's all we had to fu—"[break][break]

He mutes his voice chat mid-curse, just in case they had rules against that kind of thing, and gives himself a moment to breathe before coming back to it.[break][break]

"And I didn't sit down 'till after you got here," he grumbles, "because I was too busy trying to light the damn thing, so it must wait for everyone in the party to sit down before it — Arceus, this is dumb."[break][break]

They weren't the dumb ones. No way!

Her positive mentality is nice. It reminds him a lot of Annie Mei, and makes him smile.[break][break]

"Yeah, I'm sure we'll get the hang of it."[break][break]

As he practices auto-attacking the dummy some more, the relatively boring and generic nature of the attacks lend well to being able to watch what his tutorial partner was doing. His eyes widen as he watches fiery spines form on her body, exploding and sending the dummy rocking back and forth.[break][break]

"Woah, that was awesome." Shit, maybe he really should have gone for mage! He'd picked Ranger for both the ghost-typing and the obvious pun with his job, but Mages seemed cool. He bets they wouldn't have any difficulty starting a stupid fire. "You're a Mage, right? Or are you a Healer? Their weapons looked similar to me..."[break][break]

He obviously didn't play a lot of video games; there was a pretty big difference between a wand and a staff, but...[break][break]

Pulling up the game's interface, he presses a few buttons on his controllers and sends a friend request to the girl. His username, Lykos, was a far better indicator of his real-life identity than his in-game appearance. Also a sign of his low creativity.
