the normalcy of the interaction is welcomed, but acts in the moment after all distractions have been set aside.

he shares a look with him before surprising him by picking him up. wolfgang raises him from his legs, carrying james to the corridor that leads to their rooms.

"i haven't been to your room before," he tells him. "want to get more familiar with each other there?"

he grins, excited. red flushes through his face as he feels the beating in his chest hasten. anxiety comes with the development between two roommates, but he leaves complications of his own feelings to the wolfgang of tomorrow.

he snorts at his answer.

"cute."

from the other side of the table, he grabs james from his chin. he plants a kiss on james's lips, but in the midst of the moment, drags himself across too fast.

the clinging of their bowls atop the table reminds them of where they are. the moment is ruined, and all he can think about is how messy will it be if they continue.

"we should put these away first, huh."

the same pink colors his cheeks, but he never lets go of the smug look on his expression. a sense of victory is felt, enough to make his heart race for the first time in in a very, very long time.

he stands up and leans over the table, face close to james. he pushes the bowl aside, forgetting the note to himself to wash it for the both of them.

"isn't it nice that i feel the same?"

he had always put a damper on it, not wanting to ruin one of the few relationships he has fostered since getting to become his own self, but james has ruined it all. he has put him in a position where it was the only right choice.

"are you sure you want to say that in front of me?" he teases further. "i'll kill you if you suddenly tell me that you're just kidding."

it doesn't take him long to finish his meal. it was more of the better tasting food he has had for a while, especially after days of takeout and fast food.

"i'm that special, then."

he says it like a statement rather than a question.

wolfgang leans back from his chair, watching james finish his bowl. eyes glare at him, his lips moving to a smirk as he proceeds to tease the chef.

"then what does it mean, baker boy?"

he nods his head as he wolfs down his food. it was messy and unsophisticated, but it was clear he enjoys the food.

he swallows and licks his lips in the middle of eating just to get a word in.

"you're really givin' me all the reason not to leave ya, aren't ya?" he teases. "this food right here? good shit."

there's no smile, but the sentiment is portrayed with his eyes. james exceeds expectations that wolfgang has set on him, though they were already low to begin with.

wolfgang takes a second to stare at the bowl. it looks as good as james claims it to be, especially when the steam rises up to his face and the smell of freshly fried katsu reaches his nose.

it was enough to calm him down.

"it looks good enough for me," he says in an attempt to prevent himself from feeding into james' ego.

he can't lie and say it wasn't good. all that was left to do was to taste it.

with the provided cutlery, he starts to take a piece and grab a slice. he would have forgotten to blow it off to cool it had he not been stopped from his tantrum.

"the fuck?" he says in surprise with food in his mouth. "how come ya don't cook for us all the time?"

of course this guy wouldn't leave aeos. wolfgang deems him as a person who gets dragged around easily. he wouldn't even try to do anything if someone says otherwise.

"is it done yet?" he demands. "i came here for food, not this!"

he falls back to his seat, almost slamming himself against the chair, and goes back to teetering on its two back legs.

"no, of course not!"

he crosses both his legs and his arms as he precariously rides the seesaw of their own dining furniture. the impatient kicks hasten with every moment as he ruminates on his thoughts.

eventually, it slows down.

"but i guess i'd still hang out with your sorry ass if you stop by."

he stands up from his seat, creaking the legs of the wooden chair against their floor boards. he turns to james, who was busy in the kitchen, in surprise from the 'revelation'.

"oi, oi. you better not be thinkin' of leavin' me here."

he doesn't answer the question.

he raises a brow from the unexpected response before his expression mirrors hers. he smirks at the development of their encounter, and in a matter of seconds, he cools down.

"what a coincidence. i'm also on my own right now."

it's the next best thing to happen after his date stood him up.

his disposition changes, but the hawkish aura never gets extinguished. his stare remains challenging, but the playfulness beneath his eyes couldn't be questioned.

"and how exactly are you going to get one?"

he tries to list them on his head. only three names appear.

"sh-shut up! quality over quantity, y'know!"

the chair falls flat on the floor, though wolfgang still leans on its backrest. he impatiently waits for the sizzling sound of the frying to appear, but kitchen work is not something james can rush.

"and you're one of 'em. ain't it nice you're one of the special ones?"

even if they weren't stuck to the hip by their job, he surmises he'd probably still like him enough to keep him around. there weren't a lot of people who would tolerate him at his worst after all.

"i was worried you'd be cookin' rat meat."

he laughs, subtle and low, at his own joke. it stops when james starts to ask him about his day.

wolfgang was never a talkative person, nor was he someone who was comfortable to tell much about himself. it had been a while since he tried, and it felt awkward trying to force himself to be personable.

"i met a friend at area zero," he tells him. "i think he's 'round your age. nice guy, but you wouldn't like him."

he's trying at least.

the chair teeters from its two hind legs as wolfgang stares at the kitchen. he leans back, casual as he can be in his own home, as he waits for the chef to cook.

as romantic as james wants the date to be, wolfgang treats it like any other joke between friends. the undertones were part of the gag as he took it, and james taking it to the next level was more than enough to get him to reconsider it to the real deal.

"you better make it good!" he goads from his seat at the dining table. "i'm a picky eater, y'know!"

he can be as loud as he can since emerson whitlock isn't around. the guy was weird with all his rats that even wolfgang gets unnerved around him. not that it changes the way he interacts with him.

he takes the ball from the ground and immediately shoves it to james.

"we're going. we can't face that many."

at least three distinct cries can be heard, all from the same direction. if it had just been one, or if the cries were from different places, they could have taken one. as it stands, neither of them are confident facing against behemoths with just two of them.

"there's always a next time. come on."
