"beats going through her personal stuff to get clues, i suppose."

his next move would have been to find her phone, or bus ticket stubs, or something similar, but he realizes that not only was that invading her privacy, but she probably was the type to not have any of those in her possession.

she was the dragon woman. she probably rides a salamence for work or something.

"what's goin' to be your next move if there's no one?" he asks.

it's idle talk, which was something he wasn't used to doing. perhaps he just finds himself trying to make an attempt at being approachable and friendly, and someone he knows like gunner is perfect for practice.

cleaning up, he follows gunner's lead out of the room.

he sets foot inside of the abandoned ship, only to receive itchiness in his skin. at first, he thought it was just an effect of the underwater-like atmosphere of ultra deep sea, but his opinion changes when he checks his arm.

wolfgang finds a scab akin to a scale starting to grow.

"ugh, this is gross," he comments before turning to james. "ya think this is the bad luck y'er talkin' about?"

he nears his fellow aeos scientist, threatening to touch him with the infected area.

"ya think this is contagious?"

"let's go in then!"

naturally, wolfgang feels compelled to take the lead. a decrepit ship looked like something that a guy like james would carelessly wander about, get in trouble with, and force both of them to face consequences.

or maybe it's just the paranoia getting into him.

together, they approach the ship. the entrance comes into view easily, and after checking for any ultra beast that may be lingering about, they come in.

"get ready for...!"

the rattling of bones when he opens a door startles him. instinctively, he kicks the hand that drapes over his foot. the boot reaches for the skeleton's skull, causing it to fly deeper into the corridor of the ship.

"ten!" he shouts. "i'm never feelin' bad!"

he takes the nasal spray anyways, holding it with both hands, as they traverse through the weirdness of an underwater world.

"ya feelin' anxious?" he asks. "bet you are! that's what accounts say when you enter this space. just huddle close and i'm sure nothin' else wrong's gonna happen!"

contrary to his words, paranoia settles in within him.

talking too much betrays the cool he always used to have. ironic for a hermit like him, having a conversation with another soul seems to be his first option to combat it.

the smokescreen wasn't so that her pokemon couldn't hit his. it was so that hers wouldn't be able to dodge his.

"rollout."

the fletchinder clearing it out invalidates the effort, but time wasted on doing it was time wasted not positioning to dodge an attack. the typhlosion rolls up to a ball and revs up before shooting itself towards the bird.

the bird could eventually hit the typhlosion, but doing so comes with consequences.

"what can i say? i'm a busy man," he teases with a shrug of his shoulders. "welcome to the corporate world."

he had deadlines to meet and papers to work on. the best days are often the ones where fieldwork was necessary, but that's often accompanied by the danger of hoenn's natural weirdness.

he returns from the balcony after not finding anything that stood out in particular outside. a shake of his head was enough to report his findings to gunner.

"drugs are a subtle way to incapacitate her without her knowledge. sedatives. anesthetics. poison. anything that can be incorporated to her daily activities"

the method wasn't as common during rocket's campaign against johto, having preferred brute force over anything else due to the power trip from kanto's downfall, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

his eyes reach the same pamphlet about her draciary, but shrugs the angle off for a different one.

"what do you say, detective graves." his tone was teasing, a chuckle and a smirk that accompanied his expression making light of the situation.

at the end of the day, they were just lackeys working at the background to support the silph's case on research towards the supernatural-- a cog in the machine blessed enough to have a life of their own.

"i'll compile a list of missing people tomorrow, but the general consensus is that most of the victims are participants of these special events with some outliers."

he already has the contacts to investigate the disappearances, but it was late. besides, he can't be bothered to do it right now.

his chair swivels as he faces james. he rolls the wheels beneath it to scoot over to where his colleague was, leaning close to tease him while the topic was up.

"maybe you should join 'em next time they clear out those 'toxic chain' things. you can find out for me when they take ya."

eyes watch rika walk away, leaving him with gunner in the room.

"jus' like the rest of 'em, huh?"

he joins the search around the room, taking out a pair of latex gloves to protect the scene from his fingerprints. for a moment, he turns to gunner to make sure he's watching him. the moment he gets confirmation, he returns to work.

distrust was the default when knowledge of his background was available.

"for high profile cases like these, it's usually the fuckin' psychic-types responsible. teleports are way more difficult to track than other methods."

wolfgang wasn't new to things like these. his tenure in rocket might be shorter than average, but he still was tenured at some point.

he checks the door to the balcony. it was locked, as expected, but no signs of forced entry was visible around the doorframe outside of the general wear and tear.

pah! a scavenger hunt? what is this? a children's birthday party?

regardless of his complaints to himself, he still finds himself taking it seriously and participating in the hunt. with furrowed brows and lips curled to a snarl, wolfgang joins the rest of the participants with looking for their own trinkets.

squatting down, a brightly colored ball on the lowermost shelf of a bookcase makes itself known to him. the heal ball was one of such objects needed for entry, and the ball presents itself to a participant.

he grumbles.

wolfgang had expected something casual with the party, where he can simply be a wallflower in the crowd of social butterflies. instead, he makes himself involved in yet one of the oddities that are always present in the region.

he takes a moment to breath and compose himself, wishing nothing weird happens later on.

there's genuine surprise from wolfgang's voice, though he supposed this was expected.

james was a simple man. he didn't seem like the type of person that would get himself tangled with the affairs of others, and a little day off only seemed suspicious when he doesn't consider anything that seemed dark and unusual.

"it's all over the news. people went missin' and the boss is one of 'em."

he leans back to his chair, taking a break from work.

"the perks of being in a company ran by a man who anticipates the worst. yay," he celebrates sarcastically.

they sit in their office, tip tapping away at their keyboards. compiling everything they learned within area zero had been easy with the amount of people submitting their data, but at the end of the day, office work was office work.

"AAARGH!!!"

the sudden outburst disturbs no one but the only other person who likes to work overtime.

it had only been him and james in their entire floor. while the other was openly a workaholic, wolfgang's extra hours was more of a product of keeping him company.

"this is all we do nowadays! have they found the boss yet?"

impatience brings out the hyperboles out of his expressions. he swivels out of his desk and into the open floors of the empty office as he waits for a response.

a hand grips james' face.

"don't even try. you're goin' to make it weird, i swear."

it loosens, draping down from his face until he retracts it back to his side.

his heart beats faster as the thought of it settles. the current situation differs from what he is used to, but there was no other way he could see their relationship ending the moment they got too comfortable with each other.

perhaps wolfgang still doubts himself that they can make it work, but he ignores it for now.

"yeah, go do that. i like the food you cook."
