paralysis lowering the speed makes it easy for the fast ball to connect. the ball matching the gouging fire's colors was just a fun coincidence.

whether it was luck or the ball's properties actually making a difference, the capture connects. for a moment, they can share a sigh of relief.

"you got lucky," he says at first. "that my balls are the best," he continues with a triumphant smile on his face.

he attempts to get near the ball as it shakes. once, twice. on the third, it beeps.

"you have to help me catch mine now," he tells james, his tone more akin to an order. he opens his mouth to add another line of goading before they're interrupted by a chorus of roars from far away.

a rumble sounds from his throat as they make their escape against the paradox pokemon.

"it's not a big deal, i suppose."

the organization he works for was ran by the league's councilman. secrets like this meant life or death, though it wouldn't be the first time he would teeter in the line between them

"just... make sure you stay safe."

he wants to vomit after accidentally saying those sequence of words.

a hand slaps his forehead, but he makes sure to soften the blow enough to not make any noise.

"i thought you were going for an ambush," he snaps, voice getting raspier in an effort to lower the volume.

wolfgang turns to his rotom. "go out there and help him out with thunder wave."

status effects were the basics of weakening the pokemon, but as it stands, it was also the only option wolfgang has. the heavy lifting will be done by james' type:null.

he rummages his bag for anything useful. instead, he finds one of his personal projects, which were handmade pokeballs from apricorns, a trick he learned from his life at azalea.

"i have a fast ball," he offers james. "do you want it?"

"i'm part of the first wave," he answers in the midst of danger. "but they let me out."

cutting him off was an easy decision once they used blackwell's death as a smokescreen for their decision to hide. someone disagreeable wasn't an asset for an organization rebuilding itself.

with enough distraction from the paradox pokemon, he takes dane by the arm and tugs him away. he lets go of his hand soon after.

"you're not part of it still, are you?" he asks.

there was no contact left for him inside the organization to confirm it, and he prefers it that way.

"that was a fuckin' joke! you aren't supposed to agree to that!"

false frustration consolidates into a sigh. he still likes the guy, no matter how dense he gets with these kinds of things. at most, james tolerates him, which is more than what he can ask for.

"i'd still do it though, i suppose," he says in an unwilling voice.

talking to people wasn't really his cup of tea, but neither was it james. there's a reason why both of them prefer to coop up in a lab in their own work.

"alright. let's continue down this path then we're asking for a break."

"not talkin' about that, idiot," he whispers back in the most strained voice possible. "i meant before that. at least give me somethin' to work with."

he gets a pokemon out. a rotom comes out, but before it can zoom around erratically like it always does, wolfgang takes his hand and grabs the ball of plasma. safety equipment in the form of gloves prevent him from being burned.

"we're back up, then." he flashes his rotom a stare before going back to teasing his colleague. "look at you being so dependable with your... katsudon."

he had an idea on what pokemon he meant, but every time he learns the name of james's pokemon, he forgets about it with how ridiculous it sounds.

"fuck you!"

he throws a light jab at his shoulder.

"i'm leavin' ya right here, right now. come on, typh-" he was about to say typhy. "typhlosion."

the paradox pokemon in front of them was a bad match up for a cacturne, moreso when they consider the flames left by his typhlosion.

before the pokemon can turn its back, the slither wing powers through the flames and attempts an attack. a click of the tongue voices the trainer's annoyance with the situation as the pokemon fires back with an inferno.

"i don't think my apartment allows for pets, but i can ask them if i can keep you," he fires back, knowing an exit isn't possible with the current situation.

"you can leave the questioning of the rangers to me." taking the accounts of where people meet which kind of paradox pokemon was still useful data. "i know they love me back there, unlike here."

they don't.

before james can even finish documenting, wolfgang opens his mouth to yap. it's affectionate yapping, but it's still yapping.

"let's keep moving. i just want to finish this before we get attacked."

to record an approximate spawning location of each paradox pokemon was wasted effort in theory, but evidence to back up the lack of consistency was still evidence.

science was hard.

his rants were but a whisper, but the exasperation within his muted rasps could still be heard. not that it was difficult to notice given that it was wolfgang's default.

he follows after james as they reach a corner. they weren't noticed yet, but they manage to creep up close to where the paradox pokemon lies.

"at least it's just one of them. do you have any plans for the worst case scenario?"

part of it was a threat to tease the fellow scientist. the other was a realistic approach on how he handles precarious situations such as the current one they're knee deep in.

though he was supposed to work with JAMES BAKER all the way through, he finds a way to make an excuse to split off when he catches sight of a familiar individual.

"boy!" a shout calls dane.

his typhlosion runs alongside him. an eruption causes the nearby area to alight on fire, creating a temporary barrier between the apradox pokemon and the cacturne.

"the fuck are you doin' here?!"

his pokemon gets ahead of dane's, standing as the first line of defense against the slither wing.

"aren't ya supposed to be back home?" they had met at johto after being part of the same organization.

remnants of the past always catch up to him regardless of what he does. he already had decided to stay off from most of the action, but still, they find themselves to him.

"y'er enjoyin' this ain't ya?" he teases when james takes the lead. "i'd enjoy tuggin' the leash of a guy like me too."

it was idle talk taken from an empty mind with no thoughts running from it. the place was so plain and boring once you stayed in it long enough that they'd eventually run out of things to talk about.

everything loses its charm eventually in his eyes, and the wonderous area zero was the same.

"oi. footprints."

he calls out freshly made prints on the ground. he wasn't an expert when it came to pokemon, though identifying a pokemon from its footprints alone was weird enough behavior.

he answers with a shrug before looking up.

"somewhere north," he deduces, given the time of day and the position of the sun in the sky. "ain't there any nearby landmark in the map?!"

he stops to look around the area, finding nothing but large crystalline growths and bright green meadows. cliffs and the like were common too, but when every place has one, it was difficult to pinpoint which edge they were at.

"either way, we have time." they did embark earlier than suggested since wolfgang believes in being punctual.

in their idle chat, he finds himself blurting out a question that lingered in his head the moment james offered to take the map. "can you actually read a map?"

he turns and folds the map before handing it to james. an extra force backs the exchange, coloring the interaction with the same hue that he always shows.

"i just wanted to be thorough with this! ain't that the proper way?"

wolfgang exhales, and then rests his hands on his waists.

"if ya wanna go straight to the extraction point immediately, then be my guest. the paradox pokemon are oh so scary, right?"

he was actually lost. he just doesn't want to admit it in front of james, so he masks it with mockery and taunts that just appears as banter since it came from him.

an injured iron valiant comes into their view, its movements wonky and its wires fried.

"i thought you don't like fighting?" he teases him.

he releases his typhlosion on the field, ready to fend off the drill while they gather data. it stands on all fours, flaring up the flames on its back as its way of preparing for a fight.

"i was so ready to fuckin' roast ya if ya didn't follow. ready to get rid of it?"

their escort party already weakened it, but it doesn't mean it wasn't a threat. if anything, a cornered beast is more dangerous since they're willing to give it their all for survival.

does it apply to paradox pokemon though?

"ya gonna report me for it?" he taunts, and then chuckles. "you won't."

in the midst of their banter, a text message shows up on the screen of the tablet. the status report of their supposed guards show up, which briefly translates to 'watch out'.

a click of the tongue is an appropriate response.

"tch. they're fending off an entire horde, and apparently, an injured one ran away to this direction."

he walks away from the tent without any other word, grabbing a pokeball and leaving james behind.
