he raises a brow from the unexpected response before his expression mirrors hers. he smirks at the development of their encounter, and in a matter of seconds, he cools down.

"what a coincidence. i'm also on my own right now."

it's the next best thing to happen after his date stood him up.

his disposition changes, but the hawkish aura never gets extinguished. his stare remains challenging, but the playfulness beneath his eyes couldn't be questioned.

"and how exactly are you going to get one?"

he tries to list them on his head. only three names appear.

"sh-shut up! quality over quantity, y'know!"

the chair falls flat on the floor, though wolfgang still leans on its backrest. he impatiently waits for the sizzling sound of the frying to appear, but kitchen work is not something james can rush.

"and you're one of 'em. ain't it nice you're one of the special ones?"

even if they weren't stuck to the hip by their job, he surmises he'd probably still like him enough to keep him around. there weren't a lot of people who would tolerate him at his worst after all.

"i was worried you'd be cookin' rat meat."

he laughs, subtle and low, at his own joke. it stops when james starts to ask him about his day.

wolfgang was never a talkative person, nor was he someone who was comfortable to tell much about himself. it had been a while since he tried, and it felt awkward trying to force himself to be personable.

"i met a friend at area zero," he tells him. "i think he's 'round your age. nice guy, but you wouldn't like him."

he's trying at least.

the chair teeters from its two hind legs as wolfgang stares at the kitchen. he leans back, casual as he can be in his own home, as he waits for the chef to cook.

as romantic as james wants the date to be, wolfgang treats it like any other joke between friends. the undertones were part of the gag as he took it, and james taking it to the next level was more than enough to get him to reconsider it to the real deal.

"you better make it good!" he goads from his seat at the dining table. "i'm a picky eater, y'know!"

he can be as loud as he can since emerson whitlock isn't around. the guy was weird with all his rats that even wolfgang gets unnerved around him. not that it changes the way he interacts with him.

"no!" he tells him. "not really!"

he takes the ball from the ground and immediately shoves it to james.

"we're going. we can't face that many."

at least three distinct cries can be heard, all from the same direction. if it had just been one, or if the cries were from different places, they could have taken one. as it stands, neither of them are confident facing against behemoths with just two of them.

"there's always a next time. come on."

there's no shift in his expression as he says those words, but anyone who knows him would also recognize jest from his part.

"let me know if you're around whenever you're at lilycove."

he produces a calling card from his wallet from when he still runs his own shop back at littleroot.

"the information's outdated, but the contact's the same."

paralysis lowering the speed makes it easy for the fast ball to connect. the ball matching the gouging fire's colors was just a fun coincidence.

whether it was luck or the ball's properties actually making a difference, the capture connects. for a moment, they can share a sigh of relief.

"you got lucky," he says at first. "that my balls are the best," he continues with a triumphant smile on his face.

he attempts to get near the ball as it shakes. once, twice. on the third, it beeps.

"you have to help me catch mine now," he tells james, his tone more akin to an order. he opens his mouth to add another line of goading before they're interrupted by a chorus of roars from far away.

a rumble sounds from his throat as they make their escape against the paradox pokemon.

"it's not a big deal, i suppose."

the organization he works for was ran by the league's councilman. secrets like this meant life or death, though it wouldn't be the first time he would teeter in the line between them

"just... make sure you stay safe."

he wants to vomit after accidentally saying those sequence of words.

a hand slaps his forehead, but he makes sure to soften the blow enough to not make any noise.

"i thought you were going for an ambush," he snaps, voice getting raspier in an effort to lower the volume.

wolfgang turns to his rotom. "go out there and help him out with thunder wave."

status effects were the basics of weakening the pokemon, but as it stands, it was also the only option wolfgang has. the heavy lifting will be done by james' type:null.

he rummages his bag for anything useful. instead, he finds one of his personal projects, which were handmade pokeballs from apricorns, a trick he learned from his life at azalea.

"i have a fast ball," he offers james. "do you want it?"

"i'm part of the first wave," he answers in the midst of danger. "but they let me out."

cutting him off was an easy decision once they used blackwell's death as a smokescreen for their decision to hide. someone disagreeable wasn't an asset for an organization rebuilding itself.

with enough distraction from the paradox pokemon, he takes dane by the arm and tugs him away. he lets go of his hand soon after.

"you're not part of it still, are you?" he asks.

there was no contact left for him inside the organization to confirm it, and he prefers it that way.

"that was a fuckin' joke! you aren't supposed to agree to that!"

false frustration consolidates into a sigh. he still likes the guy, no matter how dense he gets with these kinds of things. at most, james tolerates him, which is more than what he can ask for.

"i'd still do it though, i suppose," he says in an unwilling voice.

talking to people wasn't really his cup of tea, but neither was it james. there's a reason why both of them prefer to coop up in a lab in their own work.

"alright. let's continue down this path then we're asking for a break."

"not talkin' about that, idiot," he whispers back in the most strained voice possible. "i meant before that. at least give me somethin' to work with."

he gets a pokemon out. a rotom comes out, but before it can zoom around erratically like it always does, wolfgang takes his hand and grabs the ball of plasma. safety equipment in the form of gloves prevent him from being burned.

"we're back up, then." he flashes his rotom a stare before going back to teasing his colleague. "look at you being so dependable with your... katsudon."

he had an idea on what pokemon he meant, but every time he learns the name of james's pokemon, he forgets about it with how ridiculous it sounds.

"fuck you!"

he throws a light jab at his shoulder.

"i'm leavin' ya right here, right now. come on, typh-" he was about to say typhy. "typhlosion."

the paradox pokemon in front of them was a bad match up for a cacturne, moreso when they consider the flames left by his typhlosion.

before the pokemon can turn its back, the slither wing powers through the flames and attempts an attack. a click of the tongue voices the trainer's annoyance with the situation as the pokemon fires back with an inferno.

"i don't think my apartment allows for pets, but i can ask them if i can keep you," he fires back, knowing an exit isn't possible with the current situation.

"you can leave the questioning of the rangers to me." taking the accounts of where people meet which kind of paradox pokemon was still useful data. "i know they love me back there, unlike here."

they don't.

before james can even finish documenting, wolfgang opens his mouth to yap. it's affectionate yapping, but it's still yapping.

"let's keep moving. i just want to finish this before we get attacked."

to record an approximate spawning location of each paradox pokemon was wasted effort in theory, but evidence to back up the lack of consistency was still evidence.

science was hard.

his rants were but a whisper, but the exasperation within his muted rasps could still be heard. not that it was difficult to notice given that it was wolfgang's default.

he follows after james as they reach a corner. they weren't noticed yet, but they manage to creep up close to where the paradox pokemon lies.

"at least it's just one of them. do you have any plans for the worst case scenario?"

part of it was a threat to tease the fellow scientist. the other was a realistic approach on how he handles precarious situations such as the current one they're knee deep in.
