While Bailey would never let these moments linger, they offered a chance to catch her breath as the path grew more arduous. With each step, she can feel the path steepen its incline. The chance to enjoy the view grew weaker the farther she progressed, and moments of scenic beauty were eventually lost to the fog.[break][break]

When she paused to ease the aching of her knees, there was only a veil of gray and white that awaited her. Distant shapes that were once discernible were reduced to vague outlines, and she knew that time would only make it worse.[break][break]

“Should have brought a lantern,” but the lack of visibility does not concern her. If she kept walking, the air would grow thin and she could rise up from this mire.[break][break]

The scenery had been a good distraction. Now, with the mist isolating her from her surroundings, it felt all too tempting to fall into her own thoughts—it took effort to keep it at bay, as she had hoped for the chance to reflect when this was said and done.[break][break]

Having a good cry halfway up a mountain would just feel half-assed. Bailey straightened her stance, sucking in a cold breath as she readied herself to push onward—[break][break]

Until a cry reached her ears. Something in the pitch made a familiar chill shoot down her spine, as if the eeriness of her surroundings had just dawned upon her after all this time.[break][break]

Graveyard. Spooky.[break][break]

“Hello?” She would call out, only to receive her echo as a response. “Someone up here?”[break][break]

A pause. Should she keep climbing, or should she investigate?[break][break]

She breathed, wondering where the sound had originated and if it would be impolite to investigate. Mourning was supposed to be a private matter—not something to be barged upon.[break][break]

“Screw it,” and she moved WEST only because of the possibility that someone might have gotten hurt trying to navigate through the fog. [break][break]

bailey cooper had failed every math class she had ever been placed in. numbers were never her game. that fact was a constant. she never liked odds--she liked taking the cards from a deck and restacking them in her favor. people called it cheating, but they never knew what it was like to run with such shit luck to begin with.[break][break]

shit luck or shit talent--if there was a difference, she had yet to find it.[break][break]

but there was a moment of luck when her hand checked her holster, finding her gun still tucked away. despite becoming a member of the elite four, she had still clung to her title as an officer. enacting the law had never been her calling, but the thought of protecting others had always been the real draw that kept her grounded.[break][break]

and it was that thought that ease her conscious as she aligned her weapon with cait alfric , keeping it at eye-level to express lethal intentions. after the war with rocket, and the first time she drew a gun it would be against a gym leader? it was a bad joke. "So, what's the wise idea? Shiv us all to death so you can feel good about yourself in your final moments? Fuck off."[break][break]

"Keep that shitty knife out of my face--you can off yourself after I'm done," and the once-cop would sonder to the side of the elevator, looking far calmer than she had any right to be. the blood riddle on the wall left her cold; her eyes scanning the other two elevators for a rough head count.[break][break]

too many. they would panic. they would attack the chains--and there was no way to stack the numbers for this to twist in her favor.[break][break]

Death was inevitable. It was accepted. hadn't she flirted with its appearance one too many times? Slipped so quickly between its fingertips that she was spared? spared to leave someone else in its wake? it was only fair that it would be her turn to finally stand at the chopping block.[break][break]

She would not let human decency desert her. Attack the chains? Why? So she could grovel like a beaten dog and hope for mercy? Sacrifice others to keep running to whatever waited for them? And then what? Get cut down again?[break][break]

Who the fuck could live with themselves after that?[break][break]

No, it was better to go with dignity. "Hey Perse, guess I got the short end of the stick," and the Elite Four member wondered if her voice could cut through everyone's panic to reach her ears; her tone jovial. "Tough break, huh?"[break][break]

"I wouldn't worry about me--I can end it all like flipping a light switch, okay?" and she wondered if it was her own attempt to justify it to herself. "I don't want to get crisped up. A burn heal won't do shit for that. It's, uh, an ugly way to go..."[break][break]

She does not falter for long.[break][break]

"Head to my ranch if you get outta this--someone's gonna have to explain what happened," and her fist finally clenched from where it was pressed to the glass, hinting at the gut-wrenching dread that had hollowed her from the inside. "And, uh... thanks. I went out knowing that you knew me at my best."[break][break]

And there was nothing else to be said.[break][break]

The mews were heart wrenching.[break][break]

Bailey was stilled by the noise—and the sight—of her meowstic's demise. If it had not been for the sudden intrusion of her Togekiss, the member of the Elite Four may have been tempted to brave the swarm; offering a limb would have been a small price to pay for her pokemon's safety, but she had not been given that option.[break][break]

The Togekiss' claws dug into her shoulder, wretching her away from the torn, zombie infested grounds with the use of extreme speed. She felt her body being wretched from the ground, and by the time she registered where she was, it was with a sudden thud as the back of her head collided with the back of an open elevator door.[break][break]

“Tink! What the fuck?!” and her fate was sealed.[break][break]

This was a weird dream.[break][break]

As people are rendered from their limbs, Bailey wondered if this was a manifestation of her experiences after the events of Mossdeep; if, somehow, this was her mind reconstructing another life-threatening scenario, but in a Halloween hellscape. Or, maybe, it was because she had been gorging herself on a bowl of candy before she passed out for the night.[break][break]

Sugar before bed was always a bad idea.[break][break]

"Fuck this," and there was no time to take in the sight of the extensive injuries that members of the group had suffered–zombies were flooding into the courtyard. Literal zombies.[break][break]

"Fuck that," as her eyes shifted to the sky, watching the loops manifest like tears through fabric. Their presence was a grim reminder of past events, but something tingled in the back of her mind to remind her that this looked different from the hole that had manifested above Mossdeep.[break][break]

She deployed her Togekiss.[break][break]

Bailey Cooper stared at the sight of red mist—watched how it spurted like a sprinkler into the cold air—and knew that not a single remnant would remain of those that were sucked into the soil. It was a gut feeling. It was something that was rooted through past experience.[break][break]

She had seen death before; instant and slow.[break][break]

The Elite Four member felt muscle memory seize her limbs as she ran to close the distance. Her hand found her belt, felt the shape of one of her pokeballs, and sought to retrieve it.[break][break]

If this was a dream, it felt stunningly lucid.[break][break]

“Tabbytha!” She called as she chucked the capsule, releasing the psychic pokemon that had been stored inside. “Use Psychic!”[break][break]

And the summoned cat-pokemon would utilize her gifts, attempting to enshroud some of the tentacles in a purple, restraining energy to lock them into place—something to aide those who were struggling to free themselves.[break]

Sleep came easily--too easily.

Bailey Cooper could smell the dampness of the earth as she came to her senses; head aching as she tried to raise it from the pillow of crumpled grass where it had rested. Waking up in the middle of a dark forest was not the norm for her, despite her drinking habits; get drunk, not fucked up.

"What the fuck…?" Hadn't she been home? Sleeping in her bed with Chubs curled in her arms?

She stared at the crowd of people, noticing that in the bleak light that they almost looked no different from the shadowy figure that had been at her bedside. She squinted, able to make out familiar faces that were illuminated by night light.

The Elite Four member picked herself up from the ground, unable to tell if her skin was pickling from the chill or from something else entirely.

Her activity had waned.[break][break]

As the summer days passed, Bailey found herself lingering for hours in the privacy of her dorm in the Hycinth Halls. Sometimes, she would wander the grounds, letting Chubs and her fellow pokemon roam the grounds. Long walks. Long evenings spent fishing for Magikarp. Long hours spent watching the sun as it would lazily droop behind the horizon.[break][break]

It wasn't like her.[break][break]

Energy seemed to be a rare commodity for the ground-type member of the Elite Four. Maybe, she rationalized, this was the type of vacation that she had needed.[break][break]

Surely, all of this rest was for a purpose.[break][break]

She needed a chance to mentally prepare herself for a life without Rocket. A life where her path had suddenly splintered from its intended direction.[break][break]

Did she feel aimless? Fuck yes.[break][break]

But, she found the time to wander from her roost and to walk the halls, aiming for the tea party that persephone amavi had planned.[break][break]

“Yo,” and she would throw herself into the closest empty seat; elbows propped on the edge of the back of her seat. “How is it already so hot out? Just walking over here had me dying.”

The flames would die, and so would her stamina, as Bailey Cooper fell to her knees. Each breath that rose like towers of brume would become more labored, more strained, as her airway constricted; her throat was raw.[break][break]

Victory had not left her euphoric. Instead, it had drained all of the energy that she had mustered. It left her dry and weak, staring at the sight of the dead beast like it was a war that had finally been won.
