Mt. Pyre.[break][break]

She saw it looming from afar; films of mist rising from the early morning waters to fold and stretch towards its distant peak. The light had not yet graced the horizon. The night was at its brink, but had not yet relented. She took a moment to view an early morning without the sun, knowing that even if it did rise, there would be a marine layer to hide its sheen. [break][break]

Bailey Cooper wanted the cold. She wanted the air to be brisk and she wanted it to bite, hoping that the chill would alleviate the difficulty of the labor that awaited her. Hiking boots were pulled up by their laces, double knotted to keep them from unwinding. A hiking bag, red and scarcely filled, laid against her parked motorcycle. All it contained was a water bottle and a granola bar–she could not weigh herself down. [break][break]

The less she brought with her, the better... because the Officer would climb the landmark that laid before her. She would travel across the waters to reach the base, and from there, would follow the path into the hollowed, marble encased caverns and climb upward.[break][break]

They said that those that made this pilgrimage would be granted closure–a sense of acceptance after what had been lost. Even without the light, Bailey Cooper can see the countless gravestones that lined the flatten plateau–each layer of land stacked like plates.[break][break]

This place was a living eulogy, granting all citizens of Hoenn a place to come and say words to the departed. The officer had never been spiritual–never cared for the cultural significance of places like this–but had still felt the urge to fulfill this task, even if it would be only the once.[break][break]

They said that the view would be worth it. Maybe, Bailey Cooper figured it was something that she had to do at least once in her life.[break][break]

There was a familiar pop as one of her pokemon is released from their capsule; Turtonator, her Blastoise. “Waters are looking a little choppy,” and she stepped over the white railing that separated the parking lot from the cliff's edge. Waves crashed against the rocks, spewing the smell of salt.[break][break]

The bag was slid over her shoulders, motorcycle keys tucked into her jacket. There was no more time to waste. “Let's move—they said it was gonna be hot today,” and Bailey Cooper knew that she was already in poor physical health. Dealing with the heat would only make this task all the harder. “Want to get to the top before noon... get this over with.”[break][break]

The faster this was done, the faster she could try and feel better, because every day continued to pull at the strings that kept her wound... even when she made an effort to ignore it.[break][break]

“Just wish I didn't have to climb a fucking mountain,” and Bailey followed the slop of the cliffs as they crisscrossed down to the waters.

as bailey embarks on her trek, the early mists begin to thicken. they swirl and eddy at her feet, orbiting her ankles like ethereal scarves. for the most part, the beginning of her hike is marked by beautiful views and the meditative rhythm of water.[break][break][break]

however, the higher she goes, the more tumultuous the climb becomes. here, in this consecrated place of death and memory, even benign mists become more than simple disturbances. the fog thickens dramatically, masking both trail and step with their ever-spreading blanket of grey.[break][break][break]

should she turn around, she would find that the fog has enclosed her. a straight-forward retreat may be dangerous, for the hike features precarious cliffs to be wary of.[break][break][break]

in the distance, she hears a cry of a pokemon. but what kind? it seems like it is in pain, or perhaps, it is lamenting loss as many do when they ascend this mountain. it seems to beckon you to it, like a shrill beacon in the fog.[break][break][break]

however, the question is... what direction will bailey go? when she first began her journey, she faced the cardinal direction of north.[break][break][break][break][break][break]

She would pause to enjoy the view.[break][break]

While Bailey would never let these moments linger, they offered a chance to catch her breath as the path grew more arduous. With each step, she can feel the path steepen its incline. The chance to enjoy the view grew weaker the farther she progressed, and moments of scenic beauty were eventually lost to the fog.[break][break]

When she paused to ease the aching of her knees, there was only a veil of gray and white that awaited her. Distant shapes that were once discernible were reduced to vague outlines, and she knew that time would only make it worse.[break][break]

“Should have brought a lantern,” but the lack of visibility does not concern her. If she kept walking, the air would grow thin and she could rise up from this mire.[break][break]

The scenery had been a good distraction. Now, with the mist isolating her from her surroundings, it felt all too tempting to fall into her own thoughts—it took effort to keep it at bay, as she had hoped for the chance to reflect when this was said and done.[break][break]

Having a good cry halfway up a mountain would just feel half-assed. Bailey straightened her stance, sucking in a cold breath as she readied herself to push onward—[break][break]

Until a cry reached her ears. Something in the pitch made a familiar chill shoot down her spine, as if the eeriness of her surroundings had just dawned upon her after all this time.[break][break]

Graveyard. Spooky.[break][break]

“Hello?” She would call out, only to receive her echo as a response. “Someone up here?”[break][break]

A pause. Should she keep climbing, or should she investigate?[break][break]

She breathed, wondering where the sound had originated and if it would be impolite to investigate. Mourning was supposed to be a private matter—not something to be barged upon.[break][break]

“Screw it,” and she moved WEST only because of the possibility that someone might have gotten hurt trying to navigate through the fog. [break][break]

bailey moves WEST, the wails intensify. whatever is making that noise is close. so close. with the end in sight— or ear?—she presses on. and she presses on too much. her shoes catch an awkward inclination of rock and break the crust. as pebbles and earth trickle down the mountain, bailey too, begins to tumble.[break][break][break]

as the elite four member rolls down the coarse and ragged mountainside, like a wheel of cheese or a post-apocalyptic link caught in stunlock, she is tossed against jutting rock and hard earth. the fog parts in whirlpools spun by her gymnastic descent. some may mistake her for a donphan or whirlipede attempting the log roll down a steep slope.[break][break][break]

after what seems like forever, she stops at the foot of a small valley. it meets a rocky cliffside within a few steps. the wailing can still be heard. although distant, it is in the same direction as before.[break][break][break]

immediately westward, within the rocky cranny of her landing, she sees an arduous climb loom before her. should she lack the ability to fly, she would have to climb upward... and even still, who knows what waits in the foggy sheathe of her inevitable ascent.[break][break][break]

Did she die?[break][break]

Bailey Cooper wondered if it was shock that made her downward decent feel so fast—one moment, she had been atop the precipice, and then the next? She opened her eyes to look upward at the gray, overcast sky where distance could not be discerned.[break][break]

“Ow,” and that felt like an understatement as the pain began to register. It came as a dull ache, progressing into something sharp and stinging as it built behind her eyes like a migraine. “Ow. Fuck. Shit.”[break][break]

She was certain she had screamed as she tumbled down the cliff face—words that she cannot recall, but were most likely foul.[break][break]

Cursing was supposed to help with pain, right?[break][break]

She heard the familiar pops of her pokeball capsules. Light, as faint as it was, was obscured by the shadows of her pokemon as they all emerge to stare down at their injured trainer. Some were concerned. Some were downright impressed. [break][break]

“Did I hit my head?”[break][break]

Several nods, as if to suggest that it had been hit more than once.[break][break]

“Does that mean I'm con... concusted?” Was that a word?[break][break]

Her team of pokemon gave a collective shrug.[break][break]

She rolled. With her knees pressed into the damp wet grass, she let her forehead rest against the ground just to feel something cold; there was no ice packs. “I fucked up,” but there was no blood or broken bones to be felt.[break][break]

Bailey Cooper was sore, but still intact, as she finally stood herself upright. “Um, what do you do if you smack your head? Uh? Remember... phone numbers? Weird factoids?” Beneath her breath, she mutters old addresses, wondering if that was really an indicator of if she had suffered actual brain damage.[break][break]

“I can't remember this shit half the time anyway,” and as she gave up her task, turned to look at the sheer-facing wall of rock that stood before her. “And only way to go is up, I guess?”[break][break]

Fidget, the Decidueye, extended out her wings as if to suggest flying over this obstacle.[break][break]

“Nah, we can't see shit. I don't want you smashing into something... and dropping me,” and the elite four member would spit into her hands, then quickly rub them together. “I'll chance it. You guys stand down here in case I slip. I don't want to fall twice.”[break][break]

She would climb; her hand reaching above her to find something to clasp.[break][break]

AS BAILEY ASCENDS THE MOUNTAIN, the fog seems to thicken. it causes the sharp, crude rocks to be damp and cold, rendering her fingers numb and her palms scratched raw. however, the elements do little to phase her. she has faced disaster. she has survived her worst days, and by god, she won't surrender to a motherfucking mountain of all things.[break][break][break]

the wailing seems to grow louder- but only because she nears the source. despite its incessant rhythm, the voice seems to be becoming weaker. it's sickly. almost croaky or like several, shaking snorts in swift succession. the voice sounds juvenile, if not entirely sad.[break][break][break]

bailey swears she can see the top of her climb. she can not see the ground, but she knows she is incredibly high up. despite several slips and close calls, bailey's bold climb is nothing compared to the tragedy of mossdeep's invasions. having experienced such death and turmoil would steel someone's nerves. yet, when she grasps a perch of stone, she may recoil as she feels twigs and bone. should she examine what she has touched, the elite four member would find that her hand has invaded a vullaby nest. no babies are present- only eggs. but that didn't matter. where was the mother?[break][break][break]

She tried to steel herself—tried to ignore the cold, seizing panic that came with every glance over her shoulder.[break][break]

The ground was lost to the sea of soft, rolling mist. When her hands ached, the thought of falling into its embrace made her heart tremble. How could the quiet death be the most frightening? How could the quickest death be the most heart-wrenching?[break][break]

Because it would remind her that she was fragile.[break][break]

Bailey Cooper wanted to keep to her guns, but that did not stop her fear from manifesting as her climb continued. The fear was a human response. It could not be contained. “They would catch me...” and she thought of her team of pokemon waiting at the bottom of the precipice.[break][break]

They were her safety net, but as Bailey Cooper hung alone in the mist, they felt like they were worlds away.[break][break]

Her eyes clenched, trying to grasp onto that same raw fury that had propelled her through Mossdeep. When those events replayed themselves, she always tried to remember the heat—something that had felt so unique to her that she wanted to be consumed by it.[break][break]

Her efforts were rewarded with a throb from her growing headache—a reminder that her body was still reeling from its fall. She did not want to fall twice.[break][break]

Fear could not be ignored, but it could be overcome. It was why she kept pushing. It was why, when her hands were raw, she gripped the rocks harder.[break][break]

“Fuck you. Fuck you,” and she breathed these obscenities so softly that only she could hear them. “Stupid motherfucking mountain.”[break][break]

And with time, the cold was forgotten.[break][break]

Between her ragged breaths, the sounds of the croaking registered in her ears. She was getting closer.[break][break]

“Almost...”[break][break]

She had driven her elbow into a deep wedge, using that as an opportunity to catch her breath and to support her weight against it. Stubborn persistence could not substitute a lack of fitness—and Bailey Cooper tried to avoid exercise at every given opportunity. Now, she regretted it, as her arms protested when she reached for another ledge.[break][break]

It crunched.[break][break]

“Huh?” She grasped stronger, wondering if she had snagged onto a dead bush until something smooth was clenched between her fingers. It was gross, but there was no time to process what it could be—she was too eager to drag her body over its ledge, trying to get back onto her own feet.[break][break]

It was hard. She could barely pull her own head over the lip, latching her chin on the edge just to keep her head from falling—pull-ups were her greatest weakness, and the dough of her arms continued to protest and tremble as they tried to lift her weight.[break][break]

“Come on, come on!” She wiggled her lower body, trying to swing up a leg to try and hook it over the ledge.[break][break]

And it was mid-struggle that she suddenly realized what she was trying to climb into.[break][break]

“Oh crap.” Her head slowly pivoted over her shoulder, glancing at the familiar shape of a Mandibuzz as it emerged from the fog—the mother to the nest.[break][break]

She gave a strained smile, trying to hide her clear distress. “This isn't what it looks like.”[break][break]

That was when the dark pulse was launched.[break][break]

Her options were limited, but a new strength filled her limbs. Panic, she presumed, as she was suddenly able to hook her foot on the edge.[break][break]

And she would attempt to heave her body into the nest to avoid the oncoming attack.[break][break]

BAILEY HEAVES HERSELF into the nest in the nick of time. the DARK PULSE slams into the mountainside, blowing rock and dirt from the point of impact. it's warm in this tangle of moss and lichen. the eggs surround bailey, thick shells with the promise of ugly vullaby. beside her, a cubone skull rests.[break][break][break]

the mandibuzz rears its head for another DARK PULSE, but it stops, seeing the elite four's advantageous position. fine. she'd have to resort to getting her talons dirty. her bone skirt shifts violently with spiked hunger as she dives toward bailey in order to swoop her off the nest.[break][break][break]

[break][break][break]

however, before the mandibuzz can flee, a familiar sound snorts above her. the fog dissipates as a spoink, carrying a particular orb on its head, fires a beam of PSYCHIC energy from its "pearl." however, the classic purplish-pink hue suddenly flares into a fiery red. the beam cracks across the sky with an ear-splitting burst. a panicked flutter of feathers forces the mandibuzz to flee. cawing, the mandibuzz opts for personal survival.[break][break][break]

on an elevated perch of stone, the spoink can be seen, tossed on to the ground. the pig also seems surprised at what it has done. quickly, it begins to bounce again, the hops heavier compared to others of its kind. the spoink seems pale and weak, despite the impressive display of power.[break][break][break]

Dark pulse colliding against the mountainside registered as thunder to her ears—a deep and reverberating noise, followed by a dull ringing that refused to dissipate. Bailey Cooper had clutched her hands to her head when she rolled into the nest, and had kept herself low like a solider hiding in a ditch.[break][break]

Small bits of rock and pebbles showered over her, bouncing off the lichen and the moistness of the moss.[break][break]

When she stood, she was considerate to not disturb the eggs that were nestled in the center. “Hah! Missed me!” Her confidence was short lived, and the moment that jeer left her lips, Bailey registered the sight of the Mandibuzz flying close with its legs extended.[break][break]

Oh god. The talons. “Nonono—not the face!” She shielded her face in anticipation of the attack.[break][break]

But it never came.[break][break]

She heard an oink. It was the cry that she had been following, now undisturbed by distance. Her eyes snapped open.[break][break]

Thunder registered twice, but the second strike came much stronger than the first.[break][break]

All Bailey saw was the red light—a beam with an intensity that it made her body tense. For once, an attack like that had not been pointed in her direction, and when her eyes closed, the afterimage of its strength lingered like a scar upon the retinas.[break][break]

When she turned her head, the last thing she expected to see was a Spoink. The little bouncing savior was just above her, and its attack had sliced so cleanly through the fog that she was able to make out its features.[break][break]

Was it sick? And what was wrong with its pearl?[break][break]

“Hey, wait a minute!” Bailey would shout as the psychic pokemon bounced out of her sight. “At least—” exhaustion made her hands feel heavy as she latched them to the walls, “—let me have a chance to say thanks!”[break][break]

Cuts were invigorated as she put pressure against them. The last few feet of the climb were the most excruciating as she left the nest and the traumatized Mandibuzz behind her. Some people would have called it a day. Not many people would go out of their way for the sound of a pokemon crying in a graveyard.[break][break]

But she could never ignore pokemon. Not even the wild ones.[break][break]

When Bailey mounted the lip of the precipice, she crawled. Every breath burned in her lungs, and the jelly-like feeling that had consumed her legs made her wonder if she could even stand upright.[break][break]

Mid-pant, Bailey did the only thing she could think to do to keep the Spoink from retreating—she had come all this way, and she'd be damned if all of this labor and all of this harm had been done for nothing.[break][break]

Her backpack slid from her shoulders, and from it, she retrieved the only thing she had brought with her.[break][break]

A granola bar. It was supposed to be her lunch.[break][break]

“C'mere,” and she peeled back the wrapper, exposing the honey and oat goodness as she extended it outward.[break][break]

PIGGIE SMALLS EVENTUALLY FINDS A MAP, and with a determined oink, points toward a large rocky plateau connected to mt. chimney. when has the time, she eventually makes her way there, curious to see what the spoink wants to replace the heavy orb it hoists atop its head.[break][break][break]

should choose to, she may invite anyone to come with her. whether it be another elite four member and/or head scientist, , who had helped her previously.[break][break][break]

they hike through incredibly harrowing terrain. the spoink leads them through paths unknown: stretches of rugged mountain off-limits to the public. despite rangers defending these zones, 's reputation as a hero of hoenn and elite four member allows her access.[break][break][break]

after braving wild pokemon and pushing past tight squeezes of mountain rock, and piggie smalls look upon a small canyon of stone. in its center, an odd rocky construct stands. should she move closer to it, she would find that there is an odd glimmer in its center. an exposed vein of crystal obfuscated by hardened rock. the crystal seems spherical in nature despite being embedded within this rocky tomb.[break][break][break]

a curious energy emanates from this crystal. piggie smalls bounces as if pleading for the crystal— instead of a measly pearl.[break][break][break]

Bailey had taken the chance to catch her breath, working to unfold bandages from their thin paper packaging.[break][break]

Her hike had left its mark; angry and red were the back of her ankles, where she had been plastering bandages to suppress the blisters. She should have done better research—the map had made the journey seem so short. She had expected it to be a pleasant stroll, not a full trek through the red rock of her home.[break][break]

“Holy shit, Smalls,” she breathed as she placed another layer of protection to her already shredded skin, knowing that she was already past the point of return. “My feet are fucking killing me.”[break][break]

Malpais greeted her with its vibrancy; reds stacked in layers that composed the plate of earth that stretched before her.[break][break]

Paths had been narrow, almost harrowing, and she only breathed with relief when she realized that there was no longer a risk of sliding into the crags.[break][break]

“Smalls? You hear me?” She glanced up, surprised to see that her Spoink had departed from her side. She followed his bouncing shape, looking up from his misshapen pearl to the sphere that dwarfed it; the marks of an ancient construct unfamiliar as she closed the distance.[break][break]

The red ran familiar, and she could sense that familiarity just from a simple glance. “Woah... is this the same stuff as your pearl? How'd you know this was here?”[break][break]

There was just one problem. It looked like it was embedded into the rock.[break][break]

“Uhhh... I think this "pearl" won't be easy to get,” and something in the distortion of her reflection made her draw close; hand pressed to the surface of the smooth crystal in an attempt to brush away the accumulation of dust. Could it come loose?[break][break]
