LILLIAN GLASS
'do what you will' may as well be an enthusiastic blessing based on how well lillian takes it. the anxiety that had begun to take hold of her body language dissipates and her eyes for a moment reflect his brilliance. a part of her wants to hug him, tell him he isn't making the wrong call, but in the end she settles for stupid grinning in his direction. she all but forgets the dried tears on her face, alongside the blood and dirt that already stain her clothing so early in their climb, as she hurries to follow after him.
and yet this time she is more cautious than when they started. she doesn't follow at his heels or watch his back every moment of the hike. instead she makes herself alert in the way a kid who thinks they should be alert is. she lets the leftover energy from their brush with death lead her body towards hyperactive awareness -- her head darts at the sound of every noise and the pokeball housing the sleeping donphan is kept clutched in her right hand.
the only exception to her vigilance is the girl behind them. the stranger who only stopped pissing herself in the bushes to come boss them around. lillian ignores her out of spite. any sound she makes, or gesture, is left unnoticed as a matter of principle. this other girl doesn't belong here. while she's quick to give herself a second chance lillian refuses the same courtesy to her; convinces herself that it's because she just watched them fight and not because she feels some special experience has been irreparably changed by her coming.
ironically it's her thoughts dedicated to ignoring the girl that breaks her focus. as her angry preoccupations become stronger and stronger, the energy dedicated to surveying her surroundings slowly wanes until she finds herself almost running into fernando's back. she doesn't even realize it's because he's trying to run away until he's past her. she finds herself in the front of the pack as a bright light begins to dominate the wall of the mountain.
the SELF-DESTRUCT doesn't hit her directly but the shock waves it creates and the rocks it throws do. her ears ring as she's thrown to the ground, and she feels her right arm and leg burn as chunks of their skin are scraped away by the uneven ground. a scream -- of shock or pain she doesn't know -- rips through her throat but she can't hear it. everything but physical sensation fails her in the moments after the blast.
her vision comes back first, blotchy and made blurry by tears she didn't realize she was crying. at her side tulip, her dratini, stands tall making faces at something over her. when lillian turns again her hearing returns; this time when she screams she hears it. the onix, the one she hadn't seen get blown away by graveller, looks haggard but angry as it moves towards her. the targets of its rage have been vanquished but its new injuries make it hostile still. like before she panics, and like before that panic leads her to plucking out an empty pokeball. when it lunges she throws and they meet in the middle.
as the ball shakes she collapses in on herself, a wave of pain from her fresh injuries making her grit her teeth to choke back another screech.
