the donphan goes down, and all she sees is him standing over it. he shines, and she finds that by focusing on him in that moment she can breath; and once she remembers how to breath her tears slow. her mind starts to rev up again and ideas start creeping back in. their opponent is down for the moment but she doesn't know when it'll get back up. while her dratini stares up at her, confused as to why it was released, she roots around in the bag at her hip. from within it she pulls out an empty pokeball and without thinking she throws it.

they can't faint it, but if she manages to catch it there's no way it'll become a threat later. that's just as good, right?

it bounces off the pokemon's head, though she doesn't hear the sound or get the chance to watch the results due to a new arrival. when the stranger speaks she can't help but feel like she's heard their voice before, and after a moment of listening she realizes it's the same as the voice from moments ago. the stranger starts telling them to leave and she feels a kind of heat in her chest. leftover anxiety fuels indignation and she responds with all the tact and reason of the ten year old she is.

"we don't need to do anything!"

she wipes her tears and raises her voice ever so slightly as she turns to face the other girl. the thought that they've only just met and the girl is already looking down on her stokes the same fire that's kept her a part of this ascent.

"who even are you?"

just moments after collecting her wits and courage she finds them dashed by the donphan's reprisal. the sheer difference in strength and size shatters any defenses typing may have offered and leaves her marill limp on the ground. terror bubbles up in her chest and burns her throat with bile. the tremors that shake her body and the blood that slicks her palms make it hard for her to return the pokemon. realization settles in, even heavier than before, as she struggles to dream up a situation where they get out of this mess in any shape to challenge the summit.

"nando, i-i don't know wha--"

her pitiful plea to the boy is cut short by a cry from above them, which itself is cut off by some unknown force. she looks up quickly to try and see what the source was and sees nothing but rock and foliage. the mystery of it rattles her senses even worse and she struggles to focus back in on the battle before her. she feels numb as she reaches for another pokeball. images of narci lifeless on the ground freeze her intentions even as she raises one to her face.

"what do i, i, i, i can't. . ."

she really cries now, eyes wide and chest heaving. the pokeball in her hand is streaked with blood as she rolls it in her palm anxiously. it's more dropped than thrown when it finally leaves her grasp; and in the next moment her dratini is at her feet, alert but unsure what to do without a command.

the sight of the ice bridge falling to pieces brings lillian the strangest mix of horror and comfort. horror for the fact that the ice was now plummeting to their position, but great comfort at the fact that had she followed her gut she would be plummeting too. this situation she finds herself in is by no means perfect, but it's certainly preferable. especially with fernando here.

as he takes action so does she. while she'd been trying to keep a little bit of distance between them going down the stairs, now she runs until she's within a couple of feet of him. she hustles down in the hopes of getting under the effective range of kirlia's FUTURE SIGHT and the shelter that ditto provides.

the stairs are uneven, and while she's no klutz she can't help but feel anxious as she takes them much faster than is comfortable. it's a nostalgic thing -- worrying about falling and making a fool of herself in front of him.

"good luck."

lillian offers a demure farewell to her momentary companion as he races off towards the ice bridge. her misgivings about its structural integrity stick around as he begins his skate across, but as she watches more and more people complete their journeys to the other side she lets herself consider that it might be the first plan the party's come up with that works consistently -- perhaps even without a hitch. it's nice to think that no more people will be in mortal danger by this obstacle.

meanwhile, all the movement around her gets her feeling antsy. she can't help but fidget a little as the number of people left on the cliff begins to thin. the fingers of her left and right hands drum against each other as she waits for her next command. while she knows their goals don't align with the rest of the group she can't help but be genuinely worried for the well-being of not only the lost explorers but the many rescuers she's seen nearly die over the past few minutes. if she can't help them she'd like to at least get on with her mission.

thankfully her companion doesn't leave her waiting for much longer. she hears him ordering his pokemon about over her earpiece and takes it as an opportunity to move forward. while he sets to work reinforcing the stairs set up by another rescuer she readies herself to follow him. she lowers her devon scope over her eyes once more and reaches for one of the pokeballs at her belt. she rolls it in her hand before moving to head down the makeshift staircase herself, a few paces behind the man and his ditto.

notes: lillian bids farewell to @joey while awaiting FERNANDO SILPH 's orders or next action. follows fernando down the staircase after allowing a bit of space between their descents.

while inaction is undoubtedly the right call, in the moment it feels like she's committing murder as she watches the bodies fall and the people around her struggle. the urge to help is strong in her chest, as it always has been, but she knows what the reality of reckless action in the service of others is. she's experienced it first hand. so she plants her feet and grits her teeth and makes herself stand still. a part of her hopes the voice in her ear offers some guidance but she's sure it won't. she can't think of a scenario with so little risk that he'd tell her to help.

thankfully other members of the group are better suited for this negative turn of events. water pokemon are sent down to save those who've fallen into the ravine while a few members who haven't crossed set off down the cliff side. again she considers following and again she warns herself against it. if that staircase fails too it means being stranded below or a doomed plummet -- the same as the people they seek to save. she reminds herself that her allegiances here aren't to the group. she'll help if she can but she won't put herself in undue danger to make it happen.

instead she focuses on the next attempt to cross the pillars. another bridge is constructed, this time of ice, and lillian wonders if it will fare better than the last. she stares up at the roof of the cave and considers the flash from earlier. if it happens again will this bridge crumble too?

"what do you think we should do next?"

she asks the question to the boy next to her, but only as a cover for her true target. she lets her eyes flicker to the back of the group and hopes the man she's really asking is paying as much attention to his earpiece as she is to hers.

notes: lillian watches the group make their next move(s). she finds herself struggling to figure out what to do next and tries to sneak a question to FERNANDO SILPH (over her earpiece) under the guise of one to @joey

getting back onto her feet takes effort. blood makes uneven trails down her shins and just the sight of it brings tears to her eyes. she won't look at her hands, she can tell from the way they're throbbing that they must look just as bad if not worse. the situation has become real too quickly and for a moment all she wants to do is give up and go running for home. leaving was a bad idea, she really wasn't cut out for an adventure. she should have just stayed home and listened to her parents.

but then she hears his voice, and the urgency in it snaps her back to the moment.

she can't run. if she runs he'll be all alone, and so will she. it was scary by herself and she's sure that here even he'd be scared without someone else around. it's hard, but she sets her feet and turns to face the battle. the back of her right hand wipes away the wet trails on her cheeks before reaching for the pokeballs on her belt. the wounds on her palm make her hiss as they brush against the one she's picked.

"narci!"

she shouts her marill's name as she releases it. when the donphan rounds to punish ralts she acts quickly to draw it away.

"AQUA TAIL!"

the aqua mouse races towards her massive opponent and, in a show of ignorant bravery, brings the attack down hard on its back. marill's HUGE POWER seems to allow the move a bit more impact than it otherwise might have, but when donphan turns to face the new challenger it seems more irritated than injured.

her shoulders drop as a breath she didn't know she was holding slips from between her lips. for a moment she had truly believed he'd put his foot down and make her leave; but the fact that he didn't replaces her fearful trembles with a giddy energy that leaves her walking almost too close to the boy as he leads the way up the mountain.

the way is steep but the path he carves for them makes it bearable. she begins to wonder why he was acting so serious at the start if this was what the climb would be like. it feels no different than any other hike she's been on -- save the anxious attention she pays her feet for fear of tripping and making a fool of herself. her eyes dart between her toes and his back as they continue to climb: a grave mistake.

forsaking his serious tone, forgoing caution, and forgetting her surroundings she lets herself grow blind to the areas around her. only when she hears an angry trumpet call to her left does she take off her blinders. the donphan is too close for her to get any time to think; acting on pure reflex she throws herself to the ground to avoid its ROLL OUT. she whimpers as the stone of the ground strips the surface of her palms and knees.

the actions of those at the chasm worry lillian from the moment they start. she saw the building of the bridge and assumed it would be the way everyone got across, but soon she sees all kinds of methods taking off at the same time. teleportation and levitation become alternatives to crossing the created path and she can't help but feel that there's too many choices being made for all of them to pay off. even as she thinks this a boy approaches with yet another idea.

"thank you, but i'll think i'll be fine here for a bit longer."

she replies to the boy's offer with the faintest of smiles. it tweaks the corners of her cheeks but doesn't reach her eyes, a fact she tries to hide by shutting them throughout the expression. lillian figures there's no better place to be than here -- watching. while the chaotic choices of the party breed concern for their safety; they also offer her a rare chance to see through trial and error what works and what doesn't. the voice in her ear echoes the sentiment: look what happened.

'look what's happening'

the thought strikes her hard as she sees the exact tragedy she was worried about come to pass. bodies fall from the sky and the bridge begins to crumble. for a moment her feet move to try and do something but she quickly stops. there's nothing she can do.

so she just watches.

notes: lillian politely declines joey's offer to fly across, opting to watch how other options are working out. lillian stands and watches as tragedy strikes, unable to help.

as the party progresses lillian sticks herself firmly to the side of the group. she makes her way through the darkness assisted by the devon scope that covers her eyes -- its visor revealing the features of the cave and the shapes of the bodies around her. it was initially her intention to stay like this (off to the side, cautious but within range to help if needed) but as the progress of those ahead of her first slows and then halts completely she realizes joining the pack has become somewhat of an inevitability.

the light of the various pokemon and flashlights necessitates she remove her scope, so she slides it up onto her forehead before taking stock of what she's got. aside from the scope she sports a small backpack -- weighty on account of the equipment inside, though none of it will help the party bridge the chasm. not that her assistance appears to be necessary. getting closer to the group she sees the teamwork already on display and figures she'll just have to wait her turn to cross like everyone else. in the meantime she opts to keep to herself.

better to offer no help than disruptive help.

notes: lillian is geared with a devon scope and a small backpack. she's slightly off to the side, near the middle of the pack. she's trying to keep to herself while waiting for her chance to cross the abyss.

blinding.

the mountain looms before them casting a shadow larger than any her young mind could even begin to imagine; and yet all she sees is him. his back, not yet broad but still larger and more reassuring than her own. she feels safe behind it and when he looks at her she can see the intensity his body lacks in his soul -- in the reflection of his spirit in his eyes. when he tells her to leave she clings onto his confidence as if it were her own.

"no, i won't."

a part of her knows this is the wrong call. when he speaks to her his voice is firmer than she's heard from almost anyone their age. she trusts his confidence but in this case he's confident she should leave; and while perhaps she should take it as a reason to reconsider she instead takes it like a wound to what little pride she's struggled to muster. he thinks she can't do it and for that reason alone she feels compelled to prove otherwise.

"i want to help."

she says the words and they're honest. they carry as much conviction as a scared little girl can put together, and she hopes that even as her voice wavers he can see her commitment in her eyes with the same clarity she saw his spirit in his.
