"Miss Ivanova! It was so nice to see you again, thank you so much for coming!"[break][break]

Thea stands just outside of a cozy restaurant, still clutching her barely-touched cup of coffee. She didn't drink coffee, but the woman in front of her had bought it before she could object, given she'd been waiting for the woman to arrive for a pre-arranged visit.[break][break]

"Of course, Sarah, I love to hear from my students. It's good to hear you're doing well and still challenging the League circuit."[break][break]

But the woman's smile is strained, and she returns Sarah's hug with stiffness, holding the hand clutching her coffee cup away from the woman's dark hair.[break][break]

When they break apart, however, the girl becomes distracted by a commotion nearby. Apparently there is a conflict ongoing not far away, with raised voices and fists raised in self defense and aggression. A punch is thrown, blood is drawn, and Sarah screams loud enough to shatter glass. Thea winces, bewildered, just as Sarah begins to insist they call the police.[break][break]

"N-no, hold on, Sarah, wait-- you don't want to get involved in something like this, you could get--"[break][break]

Her voice trails off.[break][break]

"... hurt."[break][break]

But the woman is already fleeing, hunting down the one police officer on the street. Little did Thea know, it was a ghost she'd tucked away in her closet, come back to haunt her. She feels herself take in a quick breath, as if the world slows down along with it. [break][break]

Thea dips her head, surprisingly content with the man's response.[break][break]

"Perhaps it was for the better of both parties for you to focus on your career. There's nothing wrong or dishonorable about pursuing your career above all else. What good would marrying do if you weren't prepared?"[break][break]

Her lips part slightly in surprise as Gwyar pauses in his thought to consider her introduction. Her eyebrows raise gently as he looks her up and down, as though she is confused as to what he might possibly find.[break][break]

And she does not miss the man's reach for his belt, fingertips brushing polished pokeballs. Thea waits while he eventually overcomes his own passion to settle back into conversation. There is a note of amusement on her cheek.[break][break]

"Of that caliber?"[break][break]

Was he flattering her?[break][break]

But he soon moves on to apologies, and she raises a hand to stop him.[break][break]

"They are on winter break, but you didn't interrupt my vacation. I spoke to you first, did I not?"[break][break]

She tilts her head to observe him patiently while he hums in thought. The man was very characteristic and open with his facial expressions, and she quite honestly found herself mildly enamored by them and his lack of.. shyness.[break][break]

When he invites her to join him for lunch, Thea blinks in surprise, stunned both by his offer and then by the Delibird that sets presents down at their feet. She hesitates before responding and retrieving the box.[break][break]

"Like I said.. there's nothing to apologize for, Mr. Wledig, but I couldn't possibly deny you a request to chat over lunch."[break][break]

From the corner of her eye, an Alolan Persian prowls. Just as it is about to approach and inevitably attempt to tackle them both, Thea's Drifblim returns to deal with the threat. The ghost-type takes down the Persian with efficiency, at first sapping its strength before blasting it with a shadow ball. Another pokeball is thrown in order to capture the feline, and tucked away discreetly in Thea's purse.[break][break]

For the most part, Alethea worries more about her own wellbeing and whether or not she's dry. She wrings out the ends of her warm dress, wipes her hands dry on her thighs, and stands up to observe her brother handle the situation by himself. [break][break]

At some point, she starts to smile, watching him so hard at work. This was a completely new look to her baby brother, to the man who, as a child, hadn't even been allowed to step outside.[break][break]

"You're so much stronger now, Alexei. I'm proud of you."[break][break]

She retucks stray golden hairs behind her ear, back into her perfectly coifed curls.[break][break]

She waves up at the boy.[break][break]

"Pink? Wow -- that's a big change."[break][break]

But she had always been a bit of a wild-spirited child, willing to step out of her comfort zone and try new things. Pink honestly suited her really well.[break][break]

When Alexei offers her a photo of the two of them together, her face softens into a smile. [break][break]

She passes the phone back, forcing her smile to widen in response to his information regarding her whereabouts. It seemed to be a sore-spot for her, given how abruptly she'd up and left the family home.[break][break]

"I left... a few months after-- after Noah died."[break][break]

She picks at the frayed leather on her purse, uncomfortable.[break][break]

"It took a few years, I had to attend university in Galar, and then find a job that'd hire me. But it worked out, in the end."[break][break]

The surprised expression on her face is owlish, a stark contrast to the man's laughter. With one hand to his mouth, he hopes to stifle that laughter with his hand, but the amused expression melts into his shoulders. She can see them rise and fall in his guffaw, and she stares at him incredulously. It's clear that he doesn't believe her, enunciated now by his rejection.[break][break]

"Perhaps you didn't notice how fond the people were because you were so preoccupied with 'beating Pokemon into the ground', as you so delicately put it."[break][break]

Her tartness comes through unintentionally and she sniffs. [break][break]

But she nods curtly in return, eyes following the warm lines of his smile. She inhales slowly, rolling her shoulders back and folding her hands in front of her. [break][break]

"I'm a teacher, transferred to Hoenn from the Galarian Pokemon Battle Academy in Hammerlocke. I teach at the Battle Academy in Lilycove, now."[break][break]

In the background of their conversation, another unsuspecting Pokemon trifles in the affairs of her trio of Dreepy this time. While Thea is invested in a conversation with the former almost-Champion of Galar, her Pokemon are entering a scuffle with an Inkay.[break][break]

They overpower the poor Pokemon easily given all three of them piling on top of one another - but they don't dare talk about the fact that Drifblim definitely finished the job herself. Like the Sableye, the Inkay would be returned to Thea eventually, the poor woman in for a surprise when she checked in her bag.[break][break]

His kind words bring a smile to her face, and she dips her head in response, a small smile placed on delicate lips.[break][break]

"Indeed."[break][break]

He chooses to use her last name, and, for a moment hearing it spoken aloud brings a pang to her chest. Her students didn't always know how to pronounce her name in its entirety, and to hear it spoken so easily from his lips-- it stings.[break][break]

Thea's attention strays from his face to fall to her feet, though the noise over her shoulder and the addition of Gwyar's attention behind her brings her eyes up and over. Nothing remains, however, and whatever moment of surprise passes her by. [break][break]

"I have. You were quite the sought-after young man all those years ago."[break][break]

But her expression displays her surprise cleanly when he comments on her youth.[break][break]

"Well-- not so young, I suppose."[break][break]

She clears her own throat, eyebrows knitting together at her half-hearted attempt to defend herself. And for what? Why did it matter? It didn't she supposed.[break][break]

"You may not have made Champion, but you inspired many young, strapping trainers to rise to the challenge. You're still a hero to the up and coming, you know."[break][break]

In the background, so as to not interrupt their conversation, an unsuspecting Sableye is taken down by what looks to be a simple pokedoll. The Mimikyu takes advantage of its innocence and the wild Pokemon's curiosity, smothering the Pokemon with an aggressive play rough. It doesn't stand a chance, and the Pokemon would be brought to Alethea eventually for capture.[break][break]

Why had she wanted him to, though? There is a feeling in her belly that she's not quite familiar with. It seems to grow stronger and warm her face further when he stops and turns to look at her. [break][break]

'Am I in awe? Is that what this is?'[break][break]

She clears her throat awkwardly when he responds, interrupting her mid-apology. But she doesn't argue, merely waits for him to continue. Their mutual discomfort is plain as day, but Thea chooses to be the one to approach him, instead.[break][break]

"I lived in Galar for a time - but I wasn't born there. Though I'm flattered to be viewed as such, regardless."[break][break]

He asks her name and she straightens her shoulders slightly, floored that she hadn't had the decency to introduce herself. This was incredibly unlike her, and she exhales in quiet surprise.[break][break]

"Alethea Ivanov-- you can call me Thea, if you want."[break][break]

The man's expression flattens, deadpans, neutralizes into something she immediately recognizes as an error on her part. She had never been one for idle socializing-- small talk, they called it. Nor had she ever given way to acts of boldness. Her flat response had clearly struck a chord, and it needed tuning.[break][break]

Warmth paints her cheeks rosier than the exertion already colouring them as she opens her mouth to respond. It hadn't been her intention to discourage him, mostly.[break][break]

He apologizes and she stands there, flabbergasted and at a loss for how to rectify the situation. She was an expert in strategic Pokemon battles and deciphering the easy-to-read expressions of children, not grown men.[break][break]

When he bows and moves to leave, Thea audibly gasps, which surprises her even further given her aptitude for keeping her expressions under control. His stiff mannerisms, the neat, knightly bow. It was all incredibly Galarian that it surprised her.[break][break]

"Wha-- you're Sir Gwyar Wledig."[break][break]

She clears her throat at her outburst, her face suddenly hot. She remembered where she'd seen his face, now. He had been the talk of the town, so to speak, amongst the women she had worked with. He was a famous trainer that the academy had looked up to as a hero or idol, the epitome of what a trainer should be.[break][break]

Thea blinks, taking a moment to subtly glance over his face and determine where it is she might know him from. It nags at her, a name forming on the tip of her tongue yet falling flat. A perfect stranger, but someone she'd seen before... in pictures.[break][break]

And he's smiling at her with a loose, ill-fitting grin. The man's eyes wander over her and it encourages her to hold her chin a little tighter, to tense and provide him no amusement for his advances. She's defensive without proper cause, other than the boldness he presents with the words he lets slip from his mouth.[break][break]

"Few who weren't born in Hoenn, perhaps. Those that are probably make this stroll often."[break][break]

His attention shifts to something more teasing, and Thea considers the man's boldness carefully. Her own volatile intrigue had already dashed whatever hopes she'd had of avoiding socializing to begin with, and here he was blatantly asking if she'd like to join him.[break][break]

Despite having moved here months ago, Thea still found the tropical climate nigh unbearable. The winter months had come and yet the air was still hot and dry, nothing alike to the damp humidity and near-constant rain of her previous station in Hulbury and Hammerlocke. Nor was she truly accustomed to the wilderness and untamedness of Hoenn. She was a city girl, that much was clear.[break][break]

But it would not do if she went against her own instruction and didn't keep herself fit and in-tune with her body and her environment. [break][break]

And so.. hiking through route 114 in the heat proved beneficial to keep her blood pumping. Her Pokemon were nearby, a Drifblim floating high above as a sort of look-out, and three Dreepy chase after it, bobbing and weaving through the air.[break][break]

She comes to a halt, however, both to catch her breath and wipe damp hair from her brow, and to observe the man with his hands placed at his hips. He sighs and she blinks, eyebrows knitting together as she muses over what it is she's seeing. The man looks vaguely familiar, like a strangers face in a crowd that often reappeared. She couldn't place it, but she felt like she knew him.. somehow.[break][break]

"Excuse me, are you headed somewhere?"[break][break]

Her question falls awkwardly off her tongue, and she parts her lips in surprise at her own question. It wasn't any of her business. She could just as easily have moved on without speaking to him - he likely would never have known she'd been there.[break][break]

The temperature drops dramatically, the woman's breath practically freezing the moment its exhaled. Not even Delphox's flames can combat this type of sheer cold. Several more icicle spears fall from the ceiling, and it is due to Delphox's quick-thinking that her trainer is not impaled. Warmth spreads where she is grabbed, and Thea gasps as her feet meet the ground once more.[break][break]

Just ahead of her, a territorial and afraid Dewgong lies. There is a pool of water leading out and into - what she hopes to be - a larger body of water. Several Seel are nearby but attached to the hip of other, older Dewgong. This one appears to be the odd one out, unpaired and unafraid. It slaps its tail against the water, splashing both she and Delphox in it's icy droplets. [break][break]

Ultimately, their battle is won due to sheer perseverance and Delphox's affinity for psychic powers. By suspending the Pokemon in the air and scorching its underbelly, the Pokemon remains unable to splash water and defeat them. Thea, uninterested in pursuing their elusive prey, opts to capture the Dewgong and head back home.[break][break]
