The crisp air of the cold cave made his lungs come alive. Despite being a human fire-bug the heated half of the Head Rangers always felt so stifled in the tropical summer heats of Hoenn.

The Shoal Cave made his skin feel comfortable, his pokémon were less so.

Infernape crossed his arms on guard, mindful of its two trainers past and present. Chimchar seemed nervous so Gan was called out and made to TRANSFORM so the wine-colored monkee had a partner in crime.

They made way into the cave's mouth and shortly therein Mr. Game heeded to Mr. Anderson.

"So how does this work?" He looked over his shoulder at the heat rising from the ground causing refraction. "Maybe we should go a bit deeper to avoid any prying eyes, ears, mics or lenses."

Now that they were putting in the steps to victory, his caution was rising from the ground up as well.

They could only dry out in the heat for so long before moving along Route 116.

The tall grass was dry and it was a lot safer for Rustboro if he didn't have his emotional support pokémon passively igniting the grass.

So he carried the fire-loaf on his shoulder; all two hundred pounds of him.

They only made it halfway down before the shadow of another covered them abruptly. Before the Head Ranger could identify the pokémon, it took a swipe at them.

"What the shit!?" Before he could command, the Typlosion kicked off his back forcing him flat onto his face and spewing an Infernal Parade at the Bewear, sending back into the wilds with a ghastly burn and hesitation to attack pokémon with a trainer.

It was fine to skip the incense every once in a while.

The whole unown hunt was less of a priority now that he had the girls to look after.

With Typlosion at his side he exhaled cool breath into the heated weather.

The sun was quite merciless which meant the Rangers were to be out in full force surveying the lands and offering aide to the people, places and pokémon displaced by the extreme heat.

"What do you think?" Taking a bottle of water he drank the majority and used the rest to wet his face and the head of his pokémon. It was a saving grace he didn't have a Flame Body nor Magma Armor.

The variant was a bit grumpy in the heat, not unlike Sénon himself. "Yeah, me too."

His tear ducts were all worn out for the day. His expression sharpened again, like when he proposed to their mother. In his head he rolled through his best laid plans.

At the mention of his parents he took two sandwich halves in a stack and put them in his mouth whole.

Before she could answer he moved the conversation onward.

"Its alright, I won't pry." A girl had to keep some secrets for herself after all.

For a moment he stared her down quietly. Slowly enough, his features softened. In his mind he was apologizing but his lips didn't move a millimeter.

Giada Gioco had a beautiful ring to it. He still felt guilty that he kept that ring and Gioco remained Morgan to this day. "I don't recall you being the type to sleep alone." A smile broke through, genuine and lacking the playfulness of his earlier expressions. "I guess we've both grown some."

It seemed Memo had been in the thick of it after all.

Sénon hadn't had doubts but the testimonial proof gave him a gut reaction he hadn't considered.

He stuffed down the possibility that this life and its challenges would get his cousin killed. He'd made peace with his own death some time ago.

Any trainer worth their salt understood the danger pokémon held in and out of battle.

You trained them to minimize that damage but sometimes accidents happened.

In Hoenn, quite often, incidents happened.

That awful feeling of loss was diluted in his stomach acids quick enough. Guillermo was a man now, and then some, seemingly.

Playing protective big cousin was a game of the past. He had to trust the blood of his blood to plant his feet even the world decided to sit his shoulders.

Memo's frame was a little smaller but had the same shoulders as Sénon.

Yet, even shoulders as broad and built as the Head Rangers had their limits. Incidentally, Memo found that limit finishing his recounting.

"What?" The redhead dropped the bag of fertilizer and his gaze grew sharp. "What did you just say?"

He was shocked, stunned; paralyzed even.

He hadn't just heard what he thought he heard.

"Hmmmm" Maybe it was Cait. It wasn't a big enough for him to question it any further, but something else piqued his attention.

He squinted in silent accusation at Laurs. "When did you become such a potty mouth?" Last he checked, he was the ruffian and Laurs was the exemplar.

Putting that to the side for now he stood up and went about his stretches. With a whistle he called the fiery simians back to his side. It was time to go.

Shoal Cave was waiting.

"Let's just go there instead." If they were to get what they wanted from old Ice Plumes, it was probably better to negotiate where the living legend felt the most comfortable and empowered.

Getting to granite cave was as much trouble as it always was. The bigger problem was getting there in time.

He was either being caught off guard with this these things up close and person or from a distant far. It took so long to get an alert he wasn't arriving until most others were leaving.

Maybe his xtranceiver needed an update.

With this growlithe being his first actual willing 'experiment' he only had one left of the species with its native Kantonian genes in tact. Possible radiation and forced dimensional travel aside he wanted to get another look at the distortion in action to study it closer.

And on the upside it would be nice to have a female growlithe of this strange new variant. Maybe all her pups would share the trait.

As the final rooms seemed to lean on the idea of increasing the darkness the vigilante took to the front, and called one of his raptor-pilots to the field. Just in case he needed a search/spot light.

In the final room he searched for the source of the voice that greeted them but couldn't track it. Which was telling.

It reminded him of how silent Dovac Funco's steps could be.

The fletchinder landed on his helmet before transitioning to his shoulder after being swatted at.

With a whistle the head-in-red got the bird's attention, staring down its cute tiny eyes and angry disposition. It hopped about his shoulder holding its focus long enough for its orders.

The vigilante purposely gave it instruction in longer phrase rather than action words. "Clear these spikes with your defog." It just seemed to need extra context and details to perform equal to the rest of the eyrie.

Fletchinder cleared the Toxic Spikes!

Taking off in a quick swoop the firebird pulled up low and tight to the toxic spikes before blowing them away and into the darkness like senbon needles clearing a path for the rest of them.

How had he forgotten about that?

Before he could go on to address the mentions of Shoal Cave, there was a buzzing from phone.

A ping and notification of a new report, a person gone missing. The 'meta' indication signaled the subject was likely a ranger. The name attached to the report made the redhead cease any genuine concern.
