Billi Marsh 

The Skrelp broke free from the ball, and... to be honest, Soup wasn't really sure why he expected that to work. Now it was awake, though, and it faced Soup with what must have been some irritation.

Oh well. He could do this the hard way. He scooped the Pokeball back up from the water and whistled for Maia. The Wingull cawed and dove towards them, seeing the Skrelp and realizing the situation. The Skrelp saw the diving Wingull, along with the Surskit whose attention was drawn to the scene, and attempted to swim away. 

Maia wouldn't let up, though, chasing down the Skrelp, diving into the water, and hitting him with Pursuit. Ersa Aqua Jetted forward as well, and by the time the Skrelp recovered, Maia was back in the air, firing Air Slashes at the seaweed Pokemon. The Skrelp put up a good effort to land a Dragon Pulse on Maia, but the bird was too fast, and the Skrelp was knocked out. Soup threw the Pokeball once more, hopefully capturing the water-type this time.

Soup was a little confused about what Billi was saying he was dumb for. He didn't think Billi had said anything stupid, and he let him know that. "I literally have no idea what you mean when you say that you're dumb. I'm sorry, I'm just confused..."

The conversation soon moved on to other topics, though. "The red is dyes," he said, nodding and letting Billi touch his hair. "I don't think I've ever seen anyone with hair that is naturally in two separate colors. I'm sure it's possible, though..."

He nodded as Billi described his job, a Chimecho drifting by on the wind. Then he laughed at Billi's next question. "Oh, no way! Journalism is really exciting! I actually have a lot of respect for journalists. It means a lot to inform the public of things." He shook his head. "No, I just decided to pursue archaeology because I love it, too. I'm an archaeologist, yeah," he added, probably unnecessarily. "I also chose this because it gives me the opportunity to travel a lot. Though, I guess some journalists travel, too," he mused. "You said you're from Galar, right? What brought you to Hoenn?"

Kazimir Wynter 

Soup watched as incredulity worked its way across Kazimir's face. Confusion gripped him. Had he said something wrong? What had happened?

Then Kazimir asked him a wonderfully blunt question, and understanding and amusement dawned on Soup's face. When Kaz quickly tried to negate the damage he thought he might've done, Soup grinned and shook his head. "No, no, that is an excellent question. It was just a misunderstanding," he said. "I'm not the one who decided that we're digging here. If I was, then I'd likely be more offended. I heard through a colleague that there had been a noteworthy site on Mount Chimney, so I'm here. So I am rather confident that there will be something here, and if not, I know who I'm asking about it." He shook his head. "Don't feel bad. Misunderstandings happen."

With that out of the way, Soup would continue jotting down notes about the site, recording distances and finds so far (which were scarce). "How about you? What do you do, if not normally this?"

Soup saw the guy send out a Golurk. Though he winced at how big it was, he figured that it might not be so bad if it wasn't rampaging and throwing stuff everywhere. Anyways, they'd probably need a bit more digging to find whatever they were looking for anyways. He sent his own Heracross and Chespin to go aid the digging, while pulling out a notebook himself.

When the other guy asked for a tool, Soup nodded and handed him a spade. "Here, you can use my spade. I'm probably gonna be more busy documenting stuff, anyways," said Soup, glancing at the other people who were eagerly digging away. "I'm not really sure what I'm looking for, to be honest. Fossils are what I'm expecting, but who knows. I had just heard that this would be a good spot, and I came." He scratched the back of his neck. "Maybe I should've done some more research."

The heavy subjects would have to wait. A lumbering Bewear waddled over to Soup, trying to... give him a hug? What?

Well, either way, Soup knew better than to trust an approaching wild Pokemon. He'd heard of species like Bewear that would either appear affectionate but be aggressive, or be to aggressive with their endless affection, spelling grave danger for many trainers who were unwary. He released Ersa and Maia, the Surskit and Wingull eyeing the intruder.

The Bewear did not hesitate, continuing to charge them. With no direction from Soup, Ersa released a Water Pulse that struck the Bewear right in the head. The Bewear lunged forward with a Hammer Arm, but the attack was slow, and Ersa slid smoothly out of the way. Maia nailed the Bewear with an Air Slash, and the two of them continued to attack the Bewear until it was worn out. 

Soup nodded at his Pokemon, still a little out of it. "Good job, you two," he said, throwing a Pokeball at the fainted fighting-type.

Billi Marsh

Soup nodded at the discussion of the Prinplup. "Heh, I don't ever think I've seen a water type that doesn't love swimming. Except for Maia. She prefers flying, of course, but I think I would too.

Soup nodded again when Billi talked about Wingull. "I'm not surprised you have Wingulls back home, wherever you're from. They live practically everywhere. And yeah, they're certainly not picky about their diet." When Billi talked about his job, Soup finally gave a real smile. It was nice to meet someone with the same passion about their work that he had, even if the job wasn't the same. A magazine... "It's always good to enjoy your job, but even then you need a break sometimes. You said you work for a magazine... An editor, maybe? Or a journalist?" Journalism was actually a career that he'd been interested in, long ago. But then, he was interested in plenty of careers long ago. Still, he had nothing but respect for those who dedicated themselves to finding and sharing information.

Soup watched as Billi threw a ball at the wild Gible, and then noticed the Skrelp, sticking to the side of the rock and seeming to float about aimlessly. "Interesting. I've always thought Dragalge were an interesting species," he said, tapping the still-indifferent Skrelp with a Pokeball. Was it asleep, or something? He'd thought its eyes were open, but it just seemed completely unreactive.

Soup sensed no outright disapproval from the guy he was following into the building, so he didn't stop. Entering, he immediately recoiled from the heat of the flames. It seemed that whatever progress was being made outside was nothing compared to whatever was causing this disaster, which Soup was beginning to suspect might have a more tangible cause than an accident, or something. He was glad for the Pokeballs he had brought inside.

When they arrived at a door, presumably the one that this guy wanted to go into to search for his Togepi, a flaming lash split the door in half. This narrowed down the culprit a little. In his knowledge, the only Pokemon that could use that move was Heatmor, so at least he knew what he was dealing with here. He released Maia, Styx, and Ersa again, the Wingull, Goomy, and Surskit prepared for more literal firefighting this time. Soup wished the stranger had brought his Kingdra as well. The more people with them, the quicker they could snuff out the fire's cause.

The fumes from the smoke started to sting Soup's throat, and then he soon realizes that he was utterly mistaken about the Heatmor, and that perhaps he should do some more research on Galarian Pokemon. The Centiskorch hisses at both of them, the flames spurting from its winding mega-evolved body bright as the sun even through the smoke. It Coils when it spots Soup and the stranger, rightly preparing for a fight.

Soup swore. "Let's drown this thing. Water Sport, Ersa. You two, Water Pulse." The Surskit spewed water from the top of its head once more, drenching the area and hopefully weakening the impact of any fire moves that the bug would attack with, while his Goomy and Wingull shoot twin blasts of water right at the Centiskorch's snaky body.

Soup watched as the stranger's Kingdra unleashed a powerful Hydro Pump on the fire, dousing a large portion of it. That was good, and he was glad that Styx had set up the rain. It'd help out with that, and also some other water attacks that his team could use. Speaking of which, Maia used a Water Pulse on the fire, which Styx imitated. He was glad Styx didn't use Muddy Water. As effective as it would have been in the fight against the fire, Soup didn't want to have to deal with any more property damage than what would already happen from the fire.

The other guy who he was working with lunged back into the building, saying that he has to retrieve his Togepi. Soup hesitated, struck by the disregard for his own safety the guy demonstrated, but figured that if it was his own Togepi, he'd likely do the same. Shaking his head, he followed the man, shrugging off the inn owner's distress. "I'll go with you. Backup is better." His words are short and clipped, because there's no place for flowery vocabulary in an emergency.

Soup turned the corner, and saw the fire first-hand. It wasn't that big yet, but it grew even as he watched, spreading quickly. 

Soup grunted as a man ran right into him. The guy seemed surprised as he knocked both of them to the ground. When the guy snapped at him, Soup tried not to take it too seriously. He had just escaped a burning building, so he pushed past it. 

"I've got some Pokemon that can help," Soup said as he pushed himself back to his feet and released three of his Pokemon. A Goomy, a Wingull, and a Surskit popped out in flashes of light. It was hard to see in the dark, but Soup thought they flinched a little at the sight of the rapidly growing fire.

"Styx, make it rain," he directed. The Goomy concentrated, and soon enough, droplets of water began to fall in the area as the Rain Dance took effect. It didn't put out the flames immediately, but hopefully it would help stop it from spreading. After all, damp things were harder to burn. Ersa the Surskit followed suit, gliding forward on the newly-slick ground and releasing a Water Sport, drenching a large portion of the building with a shower of water.

Soup wandered Route 110 aimlessly. He'd been evacuated to Mauville City, as had many other civilians. But he wasn't here for long. He had already booked a flight to Sinnoh, and despite the travel regulations tightening, it had worked out. He'd be leaving soon, and he figured he'd explore this place while he could.

He felt bad about abandoning Hoenn during its time of need. But, he reasoned to himself, there were other people who would be here and defending their home. People who were better-equipped to fight the threat of the unknown. And plus, the League had evacuated him themselves. Who was he to argue?

Still wrestling with these heavy subjects, Soup continued to meander through the area.
