The attacks are nearly futile. The Grav Apple, Bullet Seed, and Wide Guard only leave a barely noticeable push on the rocks, but they do something. As the attacks are slowed, Soup can imagine that maybe someone moves out of the way just in time and was saved by his efforts.

The world twists again. This time, he's still not expecting it, but he's a little more prepared, making it out on the other side with little more than a stumble. He surveyed his surroundings, and saw that he was on... what appeared to be a moving train. That was something. His Pokemon were no longer at his side, but that was because they were back in his Pokeballs. He checked at his belt just to be sure, and was reassured by their familiar presence.

His surroundings were filled with utter chaos. A man held a knife to a passenger's throat, yelling at the others on the train, who were panicking and screaming. Soup's brain made the connection quickly enough. This was Rocket's attack on Slateport, so long ago.

His presence here raised a lot of questions, of course, but now was not the time for him to answer them. He released Athos, but was stunned when the Gallade landed with a notable thump on the floor of the train. Athos faced the threat, who had now turned around and was staring with wide eyes at Soup... who must have appeared as if he'd dropped out of nowhere, with a Gallade at his side.

Who knew how long he had here? "Up, Athos," he snapped, and the Gallade touched him on the shoulder with one hand, reached over and grabbed the Rocket with the other, and then suddenly the three of them were on the top of the train, their surroundings rushing past at an alarming pace.

The Rocket recovered first. He growled and leaped at Soup with the knife that he still held in his hand, but Soup's form seemed to have run out of time being corporeal, and turned back to the ghostly spectre that he was during the Regirock attack. To the Rocket, it must have appeared that he and Athos vanished suddenly. Soup flinched as the man stumbled forward, going right through his body---

...and fell right off the edge of the rushing train.

Soup watched, shocked, as the man's body landed with a thump beside the tracks, quickly growing smaller with distance until it was no longer visible, and not for the first time, fought the urge to throw up.

Soup exhaled, his breath puffing visibly in the air of Snowpoint City. He had been so excited for this trip, until he'd heard of the fiasco that had happened with the aliens back in Hoenn. He could have been there, and fought. He could have helped.

Instead, here he was, running around after ancient history and dusty excavations. And he hated himself for it.

Soup shook the gloomy thoughts from his mind. He was here for a reason, after all. But suddenly, he fell flat on his face. Instead of being greeted by the feeling of snow-covered concrete on his arms, though, there was hard, stony ground. His other senses caught up soon after, with the lack of light, echoing noises, and familiar scent making him assume that he was underground.

He looked up, dusting off his pants, and oh dear god what was that. A huge monster, seemingly composed of rock--- Regirock, the word came to him--- beeped in a strange, inhuman, and terrifying manner before---

Soup retched as he watched a man--- no, a boy--- get destroyed by the Regirock's attack. Dear Arceus...

How did Soup even get here? And the scene, he realized as he got over his surprise and horror, was straight out of the past. He had heard of this incident. Who in Hoenn hadn't? And he wasn't fully present, either. His hand passed harmlessly through objects, and though he flinched as a stone crashed into the ground near him, the shards of rock harmlessly went right through him. But if he focused, he could do things...

And his Pokeballs were at his belt. With a quick prayer of thanks, he grabbed three, releasing his companions.

He might not have been around to help Hoenn in the present day. But he would be damned if he wasn't going to try and help out in the past, whether this was a time-traveling phenomenon or simply a hallucination.

"Athos, Deimos, Adonis. I think we're safe, but they are not," he explained, gesturing at the other people in the cavern. He'd seen flickering other people, but he disregarded them. Either they were others like him or something else entirely, and he couldn't do much about it either way. "Protect the others, please."

Adonis poked his head out of his apple, and unfurled his wings. The Flapple screeched at the Regirock, launching a high-speed Grav Apple at a rock that was hurtling towards them. Deimos the Heracross compounded this with a barrage of smaller, but still forceful Bullet Seeds.

Athos stepped forward bravely, the blades on the Gallade's arms flashing as he erected a Wide Guard to hopefully protect from the onslaught of attacks. Soup was slightly relieved, because though it appeared that he was invulnerable, it was always better not to take chances.

"Dye isn't for everyone," Soup said, shrugging. "And your hair is cool the color it is now, too." He watched the Masquerain flit by with some interest, but he already had Ersa, and Soup thought the little Surskit was beginning to show signs of being close to evolution, even if he was no expert.

Now, that Vibrava, on the other hand, was an extremely interesting catch. Flygon were known for being rather powerful species, and their Ground typing meant that they would always be helpful with Soup's own job as well. Whatever the case, it was a little too far away for him to do anything for now, so he continued the conversation with Billi. "I guess we both love traveling," Soup said, laughing. "That's one of the things I love best about my job. I love seeing new places, even if for now I've only been limited to Hoenn. But I do plan on broadening my horizons sooner rather than later. In fact, I have a trip to Sinnoh planned rather soon," he said, excitement animating him as it always did when the conversation turned to topics that he was passionate about. "Sinnoh is so rich in history. I'm so excited to visit and learn things." He smiled at Billi as he continued. "Though, for a journalist like you, Hoenn is probably the place to be now, huh?" His smile dimmed a little and became more thoughtful. "History's being made here as we speak."

His musings were rudely interrupted by the Vibrava he'd spotted earlier, which had buzzed closer and immediately picked a fight with Maia. The Wingull cawed in indignation and fired an Air Slash at the dragonfly, but the Vibrava wouldn't be denied, knocking her out of the air with a Dragon Rush. Maia's flight faltered, though she caught herself before splashing into the water.

"Ersa," Soup called, and the Surskit saw the conflict going on above. With a buzz, Ersa leaped off the water, wings unfolding from her back and her body rapidly morphing to a new shape. Colorful antennae sprouted from her head, and she took to the sky like she was born in it.

Soup grinned as Ersa and Maia took down the Vibrava with a series of Bubblebeams and Water Pulses, respectively. "Attagirl, Ersa," he said, as the newly-evolved Masquerain buzzed happily. "You look beautiful." He threw a Pokeball at the fallen Vibrava, which had landed in the water some distance away, because despite losing, it had put up a strong fight against two trained Pokemon.

He'd thought it would be a good day for a stroll. He was wrong.

Soup was given no warning before a fast, shadowy blur dove straight at him and knocked him to the ground. Gasping for breath, he pulled out a Pokeball and released Athos. The Gallade stared down the threat... which was way too fast to even be spotted. The shape zipped around at furious speeds, but right as it approached for another strike, Athos nailed it directly with a Psycho Cut. Disoriented, the bat--- he could tell it was a bat now--- tried to recover, but Athos was merciless, going in for another Psycho Cut, and another, and another.

Soon, the enemy was defeated. But it had put up a good fight. Soup thought for a second, and then threw a Pokeball at the fallen shape.

Soup nodded, still a little rattled at the previous conversation. "Yeah, that sounds good! Hiking is fun, and safer with more people." The invitation was appreciated. This guy seemed like someone who would be fun to get to know, and Soup didn't know if he would've had the nerve to ask himself.



Soon, their excavations bore fruit. When Kazimir stated that he'd encountered something, Soup put aside his spade, grabbed his notebook, and rushed over to the spot, his previous awkwardness forgotten with his anticipation. Soup signaled Deimos and Atlas to stop digging, and hopefully the man's Golurk would stop soon, as well. He'd try to figure out what was found here before continuing to dig and maybe accidentally damaging something of value. "Oh, you did? That's good to hear. Let's check it out..."

Soup nodded at this guy's sentiment. Yeah, of course. He'd like if this expedition wasn't a waste of his time, and he'd have some... rather pointed questions to ask if it was. 

Soup turned to the place where the guy's Golurk, his Chespin, and his Heracross were helping with the excavation. Jotting one last note in his notebook, he closed it and put it back in his bag, grabbing another spade and joining them. 

It seemed the guy was in the habit of hiking. Soup nodded amicably. "I like hiking, too, and exploring new places. It's nice to get to see the world." This sort of answered Kazimir's next question, but Soup blinked in surprise when the topic was brought up. What... was this flirting? He couldn't tell, and he didn't want to embarrass himself if it wasn't. A little flustered, he decided to play it safe.

"Ah, thanks," he said. "Yeah, um, like I said. I do hike places, and some of the places I like to visit are... pretty far off the beaten path." He shrugged self-consciously. "A lot of mountains and stuff. It requires a level of fitness to climb mountains. But," he glanced at Kazimir while shoveling a bit more dirt out of the way, "It shouldn't be a problem for you, I think."

The instant the words left his mouth, he felt stupid. Oh, god. He was just debating within himself about... "Because you said you hike," he muttered lamely, not meeting Kazimir's eyes and focusing harder at the dirt he was shoveling.
