Soup's nighttime stroll in the seaside town of Dewford was uneventful, if relaxing. He liked Dewford, and not just for the nearby Granite Cave. It was a quiet settlement, and the people there were nice. ...And, of course, Granite Cave was awesome.

Soup continued enjoying the salty taste of the seaside air, until he realized that something seemed off. The smell of smoke tainted the atmosphere.

Sure enough, this realization was soon followed by the sight of a flickering orange glow around the corner that could only be a fire. Any hopes that it was something that was under control was soon squashed by a shout of, "Fire!" by one of the inhabitants of Dewford.

Soup was close. He could try to help extinguish the fire before it spread too much. Pulling three Pokeballs from his belt, he ran towards the disturbance.

dewford is not exactly the town valerio will want to stay the night into. reports from previous encounters with strange, rabid pokémons put him and other grunts in his watch over southwestern patrol as reports of a brewing ‘war’ is spreading from the grapevine. what adds more injury to the insult is that for a sea-locked island like this, settlements do catch fire for several unknown reasons.[break][break]

the smell of smoke is much closer to him than others, for he is the only one inside the building. other tenants manage to escape the transient home before the fire spreads in rapidash speed, and before he knows it, he is dashing his way out of the living room just as when he bumps into a dark-skinned man and tumbles into the ground.[break][break]

“hey, quit standing around if you have no plan to help!” valerio explodes, dusting off his clothes before checking if he has all of his pokéballs in his belt.[break][break]

Soup turned the corner, and saw the fire first-hand. It wasn't that big yet, but it grew even as he watched, spreading quickly.

Soup grunted as a man ran right into him. The guy seemed surprised as he knocked both of them to the ground. When the guy snapped at him, Soup tried not to take it too seriously. He had just escaped a burning building, so he pushed past it.

"I've got some Pokemon that can help," Soup said as he pushed himself back to his feet and released three of his Pokemon. A Goomy, a Wingull, and a Surskit popped out in flashes of light. It was hard to see in the dark, but Soup thought they flinched a little at the sight of the rapidly growing fire.

"Styx, make it rain," he directed. The Goomy concentrated, and soon enough, droplets of water began to fall in the area as the Rain Dance took effect. It didn't put out the flames immediately, but hopefully it would help stop it from spreading. After all, damp things were harder to burn. Ersa the Surskit followed suit, gliding forward on the newly-slick ground and releasing a Water Sport, drenching a large portion of the building with a shower of water.

brown eyes squint as valerio watches the man summon his pokémons, taking his misplaced aggression lightly. the surskit does a fine job thwarting the flames from evolving, but he decides to call his kingdra to rescue. hydro pump snipes from her snout, powered by the rain called upon by the fellow dragon.[break][break]

his fingers reach his belt once more to do a recount, before finally realizing what’s missing all along. “shit!”[break][break]

frustrated, valerio walks towards the rain and drenches himself with precipitation. he shouts toward the the other person as he prepares himself to leap back into the roaring fire, much to the inn owner’s dismay. “my togepi’s still inside. i have to find it!”[break][break]

Soup watched as the stranger's Kingdra unleashed a powerful Hydro Pump on the fire, dousing a large portion of it. That was good, and he was glad that Styx had set up the rain. It'd help out with that, and also some other water attacks that his team could use. Speaking of which, Maia used a Water Pulse on the fire, which Styx imitated. He was glad Styx didn't use Muddy Water. As effective as it would have been in the fight against the fire, Soup didn't want to have to deal with any more property damage than what would already happen from the fire.

The other guy who he was working with lunged back into the building, saying that he has to retrieve his Togepi. Soup hesitated, struck by the disregard for his own safety the guy demonstrated, but figured that if it was his own Togepi, he'd likely do the same. Shaking his head, he followed the man, shrugging off the inn owner's distress. "I'll go with you. Backup is better." His words are short and clipped, because there's no place for flowery vocabulary in an emergency.

INSIDE THE BUILDING, they would encounter the cause of the fire (or perhaps, something that has been drawn to the flame). A wild Centiskorch, mega-evolved, flares up. The light of its flaming body is blinding, piercing through the smoke with ease.[break][break]

the rocket emerges into the blazing building, clothes drenched in rain. his kingdra is left outside, helping douse the flames. behind him, he hears loud footsteps on the charred rubbles. a click from his tongue is barely audible from the thick of the smoke and water penetrating through the cavities of the burning inn. looking back, he has not made it clear he wants help.[break][break]

“follow me, then.” he mentions without looking back. he needs to be thrifty with words and energy as oxygen is not luxurious inside the schorching shelter. the rocket attempts to approach the his unit door, but is stopped by the lash of flames that slashes through the wooden door.[break][break]

perhaps, the sound may not be footsteps but a mega centiskorch's undersides crashing through the pile of debris. it is by then he looks for the other man, shouting in agreement, “backup is better.”[break][break]

Soup sensed no outright disapproval from the guy he was following into the building, so he didn't stop. Entering, he immediately recoiled from the heat of the flames. It seemed that whatever progress was being made outside was nothing compared to whatever was causing this disaster, which Soup was beginning to suspect might have a more tangible cause than an accident, or something. He was glad for the Pokeballs he had brought inside.

When they arrived at a door, presumably the one that this guy wanted to go into to search for his Togepi, a flaming lash split the door in half. This narrowed down the culprit a little. In his knowledge, the only Pokemon that could use that move was Heatmor, so at least he knew what he was dealing with here. He released Maia, Styx, and Ersa again, the Wingull, Goomy, and Surskit prepared for more literal firefighting this time. Soup wished the stranger had brought his Kingdra as well. The more people with them, the quicker they could snuff out the fire's cause.

The fumes from the smoke started to sting Soup's throat, and then he soon realizes that he was utterly mistaken about the Heatmor, and that perhaps he should do some more research on Galarian Pokemon. The Centiskorch hisses at both of them, the flames spurting from its winding mega-evolved body bright as the sun even through the smoke. It Coils when it spots Soup and the stranger, rightly preparing for a fight.

Soup swore. "Let's drown this thing. Water Sport, Ersa. You two, Water Pulse." The Surskit spewed water from the top of its head once more, drenching the area and hopefully weakening the impact of any fire moves that the bug would attack with, while his Goomy and Wingull shoot twin blasts of water right at the Centiskorch's snaky body.

SUMMARY

Goomy and Wingull both use Water Pulse on the Centiskorch.

the centiskorch coils upon the sight of the humans which cues in the cascading water-type attacks. the other man's aqua troop conjures like an arceus intervention, dousing the flames slithering from its mandibles until it flares up once again.[break][break]

it hisses, burning red orbs aim at the unarmed valerio, realizing it's easier to decimate a helpless target instead. it shifts its focus. the centipede's fiery mustache blazes brighter and bigger as it attempts to summon inferno. the rocket braces for impact, eyes squinting as he covers his arm into the blinding sight, only for the predator to be contained in a dark dome of energy. the inferno explodes with the centiskorch inside, and as the barrier of shadow energy dissipates, it reveals a passed out arthropod and the missing egg, shell glistens at the active fire's glare.[break][break]

“so you wouldn't be a bother anymore,” palm slids inside the satchel and attempts to capture the poor centiskorch. he waits for the sound of capture as he crouches to meet the togepi, visibly unharmed and unaware of her current predicament. he turns to the man and his water-types, “um... this is togepi.”[break][break]

While Soup's team valiantly fights off the Centiskorch, some unknown thing summons a strange barrier around the Centiskorch, causing the Inferno to backfire and the bug to pass out, the flames still billowing from its body. The stranger captures it without missing a beat, and then introduces them to his Togepi.

"Well," Soup started, confused, "at least we found the cause of the fire, and the little guy is safe." He stared, mystified, at the Togepi. How had that little thing stopped such a huge rampaging monster? That was ridiculous. But, hey, he wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.

In any case, with the source of the fire gone, there was only one thing left to do. "I'll be extinguishing the rest of the fire." Soup eyed the man's Togepi, which was seemingly as happy as could be and completely unaffected by its surroundings.

What the hell?

"Well, make sure Togepi is safe, I guess." He suspiciously eyed the Pokeball that had caught the Centiskorch. "And keep an eye on that ball. Just in case."

He turned away, and Water Pulses and Water Sport were fired out once more, with Soup finally making better progress without that hellish bug refueling the flames.

the man looks at his togepi with suspicious eyes, possibly wondering how does the egg pokémon manages to survive the blazing heat of the house and overwhelm the centiskorch who still shows signs of struggle inside the capsule and yet has a hard time going out.[break][break]

“i'll help you with that,” valerio follows with the togei latched into his shoulders. “kingdra can provide assistance.”[break][break]

the dragon enters the dampen clearing and nods at her trainer before she launches her hydro pump to douse the remaining fire.[break][break]

“by the way, thanks for joining me even when you don't have to. i'm jonathan.”[break][break]
