It was lonely.

But being alone and staying alone was all she's ever known. People left, people died, people were never there at all.

Life went on.

Was he not the same? A lonely man with nothing left to live for but the rage and hatred burning in his belly?

Why was he even here? Shouting at her with such ferocity, so desperate to reach her?

What did he want from her?

And if he stays, she would plunge, fully invested in sinking her teeth in.

The water gurgles then and she glances toward it. But apparently, what task she'd been here to do or not do was about to be ignored.

And whatever beast that was beginning to rise beneath the surface is left for King to handle. Emma doesn't even bother to gather up her chair.

His insults don't pierce her thick skin. She's heard them all before. THEO BECKETT had been cruel, far worse than anything this small man could accomplish. He had bark, but his bite was nowhere near strong enough. For all of his jeers, he hadn't reached her.

She wouldn't let him.

She couldn't.

"The only person running is you."

What appears to be a Gyarados has risen from the water, bellowing with fury at the trap it had swam into. Translucent webs slow it down, covering mottled blue and white scales. It is enraged, thrashing with fury, streams of water spilling off of its serpentine body.

It was just a matter of time before it discovered the two bickering humans.

She's choosing to do it differently.

And realistically, she should be walking away. But he's standing, facing her, challenging her to fight back. She's never been the type to let herself get distracted- not until recently, anyway- and she's caught in the headlights of his negativity.

What did he want?

Behind them both, the Gyarados continues to rage, but neither of them seem to care. Tension pulls tight between them, and Emma stares at him, waiting.
