after he and mint frost go to collect the crystablooms for rocket investigation, the glimmering hue of the species remain on his mind even long after they've handed it over to the other personnel for testing. jayden isn't sure if it's coincidence, or if the flowers seem to grow in frequency all on it's own, even taking bud to the aqua garden that he has in his own dormitory on the sub.

[break][break] he makes a note to inquire about them further with someone who probably would know better than him, but somehow that task falls behind on his other list of things to do.

[break][break] the more high priority items include establishing his business venture (or the venture he inherited through his father's name) while the items more personal in nature are pushed back. naturally.

[break][break] but a headache pulsing in the back of his head as he packs away one box reminds him of the minimal sleep that he'd gotten the night previously. the nightmares have always been constant, but these days they seemed particularly bad.

[break][break] he finds the room of elijah gardner with ease. a simple knock on the door to grant him entry.

the door jolts open. in the stiff gap, elijah's scrutinizing eye hardens to the tightest emerald.

"oh, it's you." elijah wrenches the rest of the door open, the hinges groaning loud enough it echo metallic in the hallway. "what's the deal now, cross?"

[break][break] elijah gardner and jayden have never been in the same circles, but somehow always nearby, like two planets circling in nearby orbits. however, such was the nature of a organization like rocket. you could spend your whole life serving the same man, and never meet the guy who has the room next door to yours.

[break][break] an extended metaphor, but an apt one nonetheless.

[break][break] "do you happen to have anything for a headache?" jayden realizes how strange it is, that jayden would come to the other instead of directly going to the medbay like he's always done. however, going to the medbay would attract the attention of superiors such as Cillian Quinn, which he would rather not. "... i haven't been sleeping very well."

elijah does not answer the first question. instead, he remains stiff-lipped and stiff-necked. he closes the door, handle held down tight so that the latch bolt does not click and snag loud.

"headaches, huh?" elijah grumbles. not at jayden- but who can tell? he gestures loosely toward a shaded corner of his room and from it, his victreebel heaves outward with a small shrill cry.

the victreebel's yellow stomach thuds against the floor before dragging a few paces. vines curl the knobs of several drawers.

"you stressed about something?" elijah says.

[attr="class","main"] similar to the way that jayden's question doesn't require an answer, neither does elijah gardner. the boy remains in silence as the other grumbles about, sure that the rocket apothecarist has gotten more than enough requests for this sort of thing. after all, if there was an organization that was fraught with illnesses, it would be one as diverse as rocket.

[break][break] his eyes glance towards the victreebell that emerges, considering the other thoughtfully, before realizing that he's been caught in a train of thought.

[break][break] pain pulses behind his eyes.

[break][break] "ah. well..." he considers the other for a moment. it isn't like they're particularly close. sure, by being nature of the same organization for so many years they have run in the same circles but he isn't sure how much the other knows of him or his past. or his connection to kanto. "you could say that."

"'course i do. i have a recurring one. always involves surgery and me waking up in the middle of it and feeling everything."

elijah shakes his head stiff. the breath is ensnared in the constriction of his chest. he feels his stomach peel open, entrails moving against exposed cold air.

the man is already pouring hot water from a kettle into a wooden cup. his rough, blocky fingers grasp around its smooth shape and present it for jayden.

"drink up. it's persim leaf tea." elijah then asks above the tails of steam, "so, do you have nightmares too?"

[break][break] admittingly, he doesn't know much about elijah gardner if he thinks about it. although the two have always been in the same circles, and of course he is aware of the other's apothecary business, the two have very rarely spent alone time together that isn't filled with other rockets in the same room. the ex-beast glances towards the green-haired man in a different light, as if appraising him, when the other asks a question.

"ah."

[break][break] slender fingers wrap around the cup that is offered to him, bringing it to his lips. the taste is bitter on his tongue, but that's to be expected of a tonic. the headache that pulses behind his eyes seems to ease some.

[break][break] "yes — mostly of my father."

[break][break] it's probably not any news of jayden's complicated relationship with the late executive. after all, as a child, much of his time in rocket had been him walking around with bruises and bandages; back then, though, his father's presence had been so great that no one ever thought to challenge him. kanto rocket was a different time, for more reasons than one.

he says nothing more of stitches. of scalpels. the cold operating table against bare shoulder blades. instead, he grimaces.

"daddy dreams. yuck." elijah says, rubbing his hands of the residual tea heat.

"oh yea? cinnabar?" the apothecary grunts. he unscrews a cap and begins to dilute lavender oil with a carrier. "you were sent to kanto recently, yeah? how was vacation?"

[break][break] "did you ever meet him?" he asks, before immediately shaking his head. "nevermind." whether or not elijah knew about nikolai cross should have been of little concern to him. the man was dead — at least gavin had assured him as much.

[break][break] a pause, as he watches the other churn some herbal remedy. "a vacation? no." not that jayden minded — he could not think of the last time he had taken a vacation. had that ever been something that was possible? "returning to kanto was pleasant," he said, deciding to sit down on a nearby stool. "i was stationed at cinnebar again — but that's not what my dreams are about."

the apothecary does not pry. does not answer. he does not want to resurrect a ghost in a room already humid with trauma.

"yeah? what happened?"

elijah says- and cuts his breath short.

"don't need to tell me if it's gonna fuck you up. here." he grabs jayden's wrist, palm and fingers rough to the touch.

with his small bottle, he dabs lavender scent on the man's wrists. just a drop or two.

[break][break] "kill it," theo had once said, giving a fourteen-year-old jayden a knife. the sight of blood splatters on the eevee's face would never erase from his eyes.

[break][break] he swallows, only starting as the other grips his wrist. immediately, his other hand goes out to flash against the apothecarist's forearm. it's only a minute later that he remembers where he is — and who he's with.

[break][break] "ah, sorry." he pulls back. "i appreciate it," he murmurs, the scent of lavender filling the air. "i would appreciate a change of topic."

although elijah has no ailment of his own—at least that is what he believes—he finds his palate yearning for a taste of tea as well.

"crystablooms are," elijah says, grabbing a squirt bottle of water, "as beautiful as they are terrifying. appearing out of nowhere like that? can we trust them? are they healthy for our ecosystem?"

elijah says.

"dunno the answer. feels like we're either fucking with the world too much or the world is fucking with us."

[break][break] "no. probably not. though so did avatars and we've seem to have found a use for them too." a smile curls at the corner of his mouth, faint and ghostly, yet humored all the same.

[break][break] "could be a bit of both," he suggests before bringing the tea to his lips and sipping. it's a calming sensation, one that distracts from the nightmares of yesterday and the throbbing migraine that had been forming.

[break][break] "but if we do not adapt to the change, how are we any better than the league? trying to use old methodology that simply does not work." referring to their resistance, but also their inadequacy. the regime had worked in kanto, so it should have been reason enough, yet it'd been over a year since that initial assembly.

elijah grumbles. a vein appears on his head as his blood reaches a warm simmer.

"there's issue of adapting too quickly. moving too quick. too carelessly." the apothecary retorts, a slight snarl to his timbre. "people leap headfirst into things they don't understand, and think they're invincible. just look at bryan delarosa. man thinks he's god."

he sprays his plants damp. ones with many branches, leaves that overlay ontop of other leaves like ornate fans. his victreebel's vines travel across the floor like old rivers.

"no. i just take care of them. with my old methods."
