The sun shone brightly down upon the city of Ever Grande. It had been doing so for the past few days, temperatures were breaking old records and people were feeling the effects of it. Johanna was currently sitting upon a bench at the local park, busy baking or dying underneath the sun, she had yet to decide which it was. Even with Hauke the Trevenants attempt at granting her shade and a small breeze by waving its arms at her, the sun was uncomfortable.

Dressed in rather skimpy attire, punkish black and purple tank top, black short shorts, shades, and shoes to match. Blue hair braided into twin tails, She looked like someone who could mean trouble. Though, for now she wasn’t the one who had caught the attention of the general populace. That honor was granted to a band of merry Kindlers performing what some might say rituals of some sort alongside their Pokémon, while proclaiming the second coming of their Lord and Savior.

Well, Doomsayers were nothing new, and they had only grown more plentiful after the dreaded events of a certain Day which even she didn’t want to think about, even though she hadn’t been directly involved. Though a curious thought did spring into her mind from time to time. The Kindlers Pokémon were glowing, maybe they were doing something with the sun? Though she threw the notion away, that was a dumb idea.

While normally the Hoennian summer wouldn’t bother him—

This time, though, it was fucking torture.

Mostly because of his prosthetics being made of fucking metal, he could already feel the joints by his shoulder and his knee getting inflamed with irritation. And that was driving him nuts.

Wasn’t the terrible sun supposed to bear down full force on the region a month later, not this early?

Ugh!

All he could do at the moment was fan himself with his hand—because holy shit why was there no shade around these parts—and what was up with those flame dancers? Really? Out in this he—

He thought there was a vestige of an attack being performed, but the heat was driving him nuts, he needed to find some shade—and fast.

Enju was never this hot.

Seeing that there was someone with a tree-like Pokémon, he then got an idea—but was sure that his Golurk would hate him. Nevertheless, though, the bigger an object, the bigger a shadow it could cast, right?

A few moments later, his Golurk materialized, offering temporary relief from the scorching—ugh, while there was shade now, the problem was the hot, fucking steaming air.

“Dead inside yet from this heat?” he asked the blue-haired young woman idly, as his Golurk shifted ever so slightly to offer shade for the both of them—to help alleviate the Trevenant from the heat.

Sweat slowly ran down as the heat got to her. So much in fact that she didn’t notice the sudden appearance of Arashi until he spoke. She looked mildly shocked in his direction, though she had luckily heard what he said and could reply once she had composed herself.

She gave him a small casual acknowledgment waving as she spoke “Dead both inside and outside.” She sent the kid a timid smile. Having not noticed the change in the shadow’s appearance.

However, the Trevenant had. It gave the Golurk a polite bow and made some tree sounds that were meant to convey some sort of thanks.

“The name is Johanna, and what might I call you?” She casually asked. Before sending her glance towards the group of Kindlers she could swear they grew more fervent in their prayers by the moment.

“I can totally relate to dying inside,” he began as he took the unoccupied part of the bench to sit down—and hissed because of the recoil caused by the heat. Holy shit, what was this, ~~Arizona~~ Orre?!

“Y’can call me Arashi,” he replied in response to the introduction.

While the Golurk had moved ever so slightly to put as much shade down where the two were as possible, a slight humming noise from the automaton Pokémon was extended in the Trevenant’s direction, approximately meaning to say, ‘think nothing of it’, because the heat was getting ridiculous.

“I dunno ‘bout you, but I’m ready to cut a bitch… I hate how hot it’s gotten, and hell it ain’t even fucking summer proper yet!” he grumbled as he fanned himself with his left hand, a futile attempt at staying cool.

Despite there being a lurking shadow hunkered down over them, fact of the matter was that the heat haze rising from the ground was equally as hot—not to mention absolutely disgusting…

“…you wanna check if those idiots are the one responsible for this?” he asked, tilting his head in the direction of where he spotted the ‘fire dancers’ going all-out, despite the weather being so hot already.

Like, yikes.

It seemed the heat was getting to the guy worse than her. She felt a bit of pity towards him, and was about to consider offering to splash him with water from her Wartortle. Still, the idea was maybe not exactly something he might’ve been inclined to. So she allowed him to introduce himself first.

“Agreed. This heat. For real, I am this close to beating up whoever or whatever is responsible for it.” She gestured towards Arashi, holding two fingers mere millimeters from each other to show just how bothered she was.

Not long after, Arashi came with a curious proposal. “Wait, you don’t think they are causing this, do you?” She sounded to be in mild disbelief. But as she looked at the kindlers and their fire dancing ways, she noticed the Pokémon they had with them were mostly fire types and said Pokémon was shining ever so quietly, as if performing some sort of technique during their little choreographed ritual.

“You know what, I think you might be onto something.” She got up from her position as she proclaimed this, and looked toward Arashi for a short moment before turning her attention towards the gathered group of kindlers.

Thank the hell he wasn’t alone with the sentiment, holding in a bark of laughter and giving a momentary smirk as she realized that he’d put two and two together.

“Those Fire-types ain’t out there for just decoration—I’d know, I have several Fire-types of my own,” he added onto the observation, while the Golurk kept guard over them, extending his hulking shadow as much as possible to offer them enough shade.

At her own observation, he nodded quietly.

“Get a Water-type ready just in case,” he continued quietly, rummaging around his pocket and finding a particular shrunken marble on his person. Perfect.

She gave him an acknowledging nod. Now that he had pointed it out to her. It was very obvious. How could she have been so blind up until now? Maybe she hadn’t wanted to see it. Either way didn’t matter. What mattered was what they were about to do.

At his suggestion. She retrieved the sole water type she had in her arsenal. The Wartortle manifested at her side. The first thing it did was look at Johanna, then towards Arashi, and then the Kindlers trying to figure out who was the issue this time. But as the heat beat down upon it. It figured that the Kindlers and their fire types were the problems.

“Sounds like you have some sort of plan,” Johanna commented. “Do you want to take the lead?” She aired the suggestion, though her eyes didn’t move from the Kindlers’ just in case they sensed their incoming meddling.

“Yeah, let me,” he remarked, and for the first time he did something—

Taking off the red overcoat he had on, just so the full extent of discomfort would be revealed. While his left arm was normal flesh and blood, his right arm starting from the shoulder all the way down—

Was a prosthetic. And since said prosthetic was made of metal, the section where it ‘joined’ the rest of his flesh-and-blood self, right where the right arm began, was already an unsightly, uncomfortable, painfully-red mess.

“Damn it, I really hate the heat,” he grumbled as he summoned his Feraligatr, huge hulking Water-type appearing from the flash of red light before looking at his Golurk.

“Al, you stay here with her tree companion. We’ll be back.”

And off he stomped towards the fire dancing people; Feraligatr following closely behind him, leering menacingly.

Maybe it should’ve been obvious to her from the way the heat seemed to affect him much more than her. And yet, when the prosthetics were revealed she could do naught but feel her mouth open wide in surprise. She knew it wasn’t polite to stare, yet her eyes kept being pulled towards it. She wanted to ask how it happened, but that might’ve been even more impolite than merely looking at it.

It was only when the Feraligatr appeared that she could close her mouth and pull her attention away from the prosthetics and onto their task at hand. “Hauke, you stay here as well.” She informed her Trevenant. It nodded, figuring what they were about to do would be somewhat less wise, and involve those fire types, and it did not want to engage with those.

Arashi took the lead, and she followed behind. Wartortle walked just ahead of Johanna as a sort of protective wall between its trainer and what it assumed would be their enemies.

One of the Kindlers noticed two youths heading in their direction. The big bulky man halted his part of the ceremony and turned to them. With a big smile on his face, the oaf turned to the two and said. “Well hello there! Is there anything I can help you two with?” Though his focus was on the humans, he by no means ignored the Water Type Pokémon by their side.

“Yeah, there’s something I’d wanna bring up with you,” he began, pointing his right hand at all the assembled Fire-types.

“Are you trying to summon the fucking sun?!” he continued, never mind that his temper was starting to rear its fiery, ugly head—otherwise, he’d had enough and he could feel the metal of his arm sizzling. “It’s already so fucking hot out here, you’re killing people!”

He then waved his arms around for emphasis. Pretty much everyone but him and his blue-haired companion had bolted for what little, non-existent shade there was that was available.

“Summer ain’t for another few weeks! Stop using Sunny Day—I can tell you’re using it—normal Fire-types don’t glow like that consistently!”

I’ve been keeping count in my head! he thought to himself, before the Feraligatr cackled menacingly, ready to douse them all with Hydro Pump on his command.

The big Oaf looked calmly at Arashi as his tirade of insults, threats, and accusations came avalanching towards him. He took it all in a stride for a moment. Though his gaze turned cold, even if his smile remained.

Johanna tensed, reading the body language of this Kindler clearly. Yet, she said nothing for now. Wartortle took a defensive position, ready to go if need be.

“Listen here punk, I don’t know who you think you are. But we have a right to practice our religion wherever we want, just as much as you everyone has the right to carry Pokémon!” As he spoke, he visibly puffed up, his shoulders widened, stance grew more assertive. Clearly, he was trying to intimidate Arashi.

Johanna dared not look away from the Big Aggressive Kindler, afraid that he might throw a punch the moment she did. He certainly looked like someone just waiting for the moment. His religious friends slowly began to halt their proceedings, Pokémon included, yet they still shimmered with a sunlike hue.

“Yeah, well, for starters, y’aint considerate enough of people who have THESE!”

He then gestured to his right arm, where the flesh near his shoulder was already pretty much in a state of severe irritation. “Have you also considered…”

He stopped for a few moments, having to take a deep breath so he could keep the momentum.

“People get nosebleeds too! Sunburns! Heat stroke! And yet you,” he continued, pointing a finger at the ugly-ass leader, “…don’t. give. a. shit. about everyone else! You hyper focus too much on your idiocy!”

Unable to resist any longer, the Feraligatr growled, before Arashi whistled exactly once—and the Water-type cackled ferociously, before unleashing a powerful burst of Hydro Pump at the group.

“Consider this party broken up! I ain’t gonna stand for this kind of fuckery!”

All the yapping in the world from Arashi could not change the Kindler’s opinion. The very foundation on which his personality was made was his belief in his own righteousness, others be damned. He stood there, uncaring of the words even the sight of the prosthetic did nothing to change his mind.

But he kept his head cool. This was but a small boy, a fly in the face of the very sun. His high opinion kept him from throwing hands right until the Feraligatr fired a Hydro Pump at him and his group. Pushed to the ground by the strong burst of water, he was quick to rise up.

Had it not for more level-headed people, Arashi would have been the recipient of a pummeling. But the Kindler was held back by fellow members of his group, each of them holding him by the shoulders as he tried to fight his way through and grab Arashi but to no avail. At last, he gave up, though they had assured him that Arashi was not worth it, it was not the words that stopped him, but the tiredness of fighting equally grown people.

Slowly the group of kindlers slinked away somewhat defeated, at least until they found somewhere else to summon the sun.

Left behind were Arashi and Johanna. Johanna was slightly baffled by the ease with which this was resolved. “Well, that went easier than expected.” She said the surprise is easy to hear in her voice.

“Sometimes, y’know, just gotta get through to these blockheads with a lil’ bit of… force,” he admitted with a grumble.

He was still ready for a scrap, all things considered. Although hitting a… a kid, despite him not being one at all, would definitely have crossed the line.

What they didn’t know that he wasn’t exactly a… ‘kid’ anymore, by any means or sense of the word.

“That’s done, at least. I could’a still slugged his ugly mug, though. Inconsiderate little shits,” he added with a gruff shake of his head.

The Feraligatr shook his own head as well, before releasing another burst of Hydro Pump skyward, before it fell back to the ground as his own ‘rendition’ of Rain Dance.

“Well, that’s that settled… for now.”

While she didn’t like that resorting to violence was the right choice. She could not deny the effectiveness of it “I suppose you are right…” She stated.

“Perhaps, he’d probably have done the same to you though.” She reminded him. Though who would’ve come out of that worse off, was hard to say. Though while she didn’t say it out loud, her money wasn’t on Arashi winning a physical altercation.

The Feraligatr celebrated the victory with its own simulated Rain Dance. The Wartortle joined it in shooting water into the air.

The water was appreciated as the gravity sent it back down upon them, cooling them down. “For now.” She repeated. “Though I get the feeling they’ll just be going somewhere else…” She continued. But that was someone else’s problem.
