monday. morning.

fernando stands outside the lavaridge gym, observing the ticking hands on his watch as the minute ends on the hour. the lavish, orient background of the facility is lost upon him. his focus is on the task at hand, solely and entirely. today marks day one of bronwen's training and there is much to cover. unfortunately, time is not a luxury they have to spare.

he enters through the gym's entrance, unopposed, uncaring. his eyes are narrow and his gaze expectant. if she wants to carry around the name silph then he'll make her earn it. evelyn silph was the first, and bronwen will not be an exception. this time, more then his surname is on the line—this time it's his job.

the belt around his waist carries more than six pokeballs, a growing habit that's come in handy all things considered. each of them were deliberately chosen, each with stormy in mind.

today is day one and they've many to go.

Of course Fernando had made an appointment. It was just the type of proper, enforced, military-esque thing he could do. She can see him from inside of the building because she's just finished discussing arrangements for shipping more hot spring supplies. That, and apparently the springs had recently become overrun with Sandile and were causing problems for the guests.[break][break]

Unfortunately, she wouldn't be getting to that issue this morning, because her older brother had more important things to worry about. Like whipping her into shape.[break][break]

No one opposes Fernando because they're all busy running errands or enjoying themselves. They know who he is, after all, so they don't feel inclined to bother him. They were also expecting his arrival because Stormy had made sure to inform them of it.[break][break]

Stormy pushes away from the counter, insisting that she will take care of it in the evening, and to not worry.[break][break]

"Good morning, brother. What do you have planned for today?"[break][break]

She can only hope that this reunion of theirs would run without a hitch.[break][break]

no one opposes fernando because they know better. only one person dares to stand up against him and it's always the least qualified person to do so. his eyes narrow in on the habitual culprit, unimpressed and intolerant.

"have you decided upon your gym format? how will you have challengers earn the lavaridge badge?"

in typical fashion, fernando gets straight to the point. all the other pleasantries and formalities are unneeded. he doesn't have the time for it. they have an objective to accomplish, a champion to be made, and most importantly, an idiot to educate.

The way he speaks to her begs no respect from her, and she rolls back her shoulders to try and relieve some pent up stress. The man's a ticking time bomb.[break][break]

fernando laughs because the naivety behind it is something so elementary stupid—yet the notion of it is so painstakingly wide spread it hurt. such sentiments remind him of the reports from dewford town, rumors about the successor to alexander silph and the dewford gym. it makes him nauseous. stormy will not be subjected to the same. he will make sure of it.

"what will you do when a challenger has a pair of pokemon that do not respect each other but defeat both of your pokemon with ease?"

it's an important question because he needs the gym leader's ideologies to mirror his own. they are acting representatives of the league and work to vet and shape trainers to be the best that they can be. hoenn's talent pool is limited and fernando cannot spare losing another rising star. cait alfric alone cannot fill the void in his army. hoenn needs capable trainers and it's stormy's job to make them strong.

trivial, subjective aspects like respect have no place here. the strong win and the victorious prosper.

rocket cannot be defeated by respect alone. it is power that determines who is the winner and who is the loser.

Stormy blinks, mostly in disgust. The way he repeated her response was so vile, she was pretty sure he'd literally spat the word out. And spat on her.[break][break]

His laughter is sickening, and makes her stomach fall over itself in unease. Fernando genuinely makes her sick. Nothing she says or does will ever impress him, it seems.[break][break]

For once, she finds it difficult to answer his question immediately. She hadn't thought of what he might say, hadn't thought of a response that might sound right.[break][break]

Because she has nothing to say.[break][break]

"There's more to strength than just brute force. If they defeat my pokemon with ease, I will have to give them their badge. But they won't have earned my respect."[break][break]

She knows that that's not what he wants to hear. He doesn't care about being respected. He'd rather be feared.[break][break]

fernando's eyes narrow at her answer, barely a hint of a smile peaking out from his otherwise judgmental scowl.

"good. that's the right answer for once."

there's no further reason to delay. both of his hands reach for a deliberate pair of pokeballs, each on opposite sides of his waist. while he has no worries that he'll handle the battle with ease, it doesn't hurt to research the opponent. his first pokemon won't be a stranger to her but the second one is a special one he's been nurturing for such an occasion.

"thankfully, your respect is not one of the qualifications of being champion."

a limp toss of his first pokeball reveals none other than his charizard. it's the same charizard that carried her out of slateport and the same one that rendered her rapidash unable to battle. with a purposeful stare, it stares straight at her, slowly coming to recognize why it was called out. it stands in front of him, silent, awaiting the call to battle.

"nor will it protect you from rocket or in battle."

She opens her mouth slightly, clearly a little bit surprised at his response. She had finally said the right thing?[break][break]

But, once again, the brief feeling of accomplishment melts away the minute Fernando reaches for a pokeball. She almost flinches, but holds her own. Battling her brother is always brutal and unrelenting. She never looks forward to it.[break][break]

His words, although unkind, hold the truth. Especially in this world, in this war they were in, respect meant absolutely nothing to those who held more power. [break][break]

And, she isn't at all surprised to see him release his Charizard. The beast who had brutalized Apollo, who had turned Stormy into a shell of herself in front of cait alfric. [break][break]

She regards the dragon with some degree of apprehension. Where at once she had wished to befriend the creature, she now felt only unease. Something had been done to the Pokemon to warrant it losing all curiosity or friendliness towards her.[break][break]

Like Fernando, Stormy tosses out a pokeball. Another Charizard stands in front of her, this one with scales as black as smoke. Wadjet regards Charizard with respect, but stands firmly in front of her soon to be opponent.[break][break]

"Then it's a good thing I have you around to protect me."[break][break]

there's no fascination in a mirror match. the odd coloration of her charizard is as interesting as bronwen's personality. fernando finds little value in either and keeps his eyes on the prize. his last pokeball comes up and he taps it instead of dropping it. what comes out is none other than his rhydon.

"i shouldn't have to."

the rhydon takes a position directly in front of him. his charizard takes flight, anticipating the inevitable battle.

"no one should."

his eyes narrow as he awaits stormy's last pokemon. his general strategy has long been locked into place. considering the nature of his pokemon and their abilities, there's little stormy can bring out that'll put a damper on his basic attack routine.

Perhaps it's the heat that's getting to her, or maybe just the steely look in Fernando's eye. She hadn't released Wadjet to brag or show off, and she suddenly felt meek and childish for even bringing her out. The lack of reaction was daunting and immediately made her question her actions.[break][break]

Her eyes follow Fernando's second Pokemon's arrival. A Rhydon, a Pokemon she didn't yet have, but anticipated in her team one day. She briefly considers releasing her own Rhyhorn in comparison, but decides against it. Instead, the woman glances over Fernando's shoulder at the Castform still inside the building.[break][break]

Sol dissolves his cloudy body as he slips in between the space in the doors, popping out again on the other side. He timidly approaches the battlefield, taking one quick look at his would-be opponents and wishing he hadn't shown up at all.[break][break]

"You say that as if you have no faith or trust in companions, no one you can count on for when you really need it. That's sad."[break][break]

Wadjet watches as her fellow Charizard takes flight. One of her wings rises up to block the debris that's blown her way in his wake, but it only takes her a moment to join him in the sky. Castform remains cautious, looking at Stormy to make sure that this is what she wanted him to do.[break][break]

"Sunny day, Sol. Wadjet, dragon dance."[break][break]

Sol's tiny cloudy body would dissipate, only to come back together a sunny and cheery blob. The sun bore down hard on their backs, firing up both Charizard's flames. In turn, Wadjet would begin to perform some sort of dance, boosting her attack and speed.[break][break]

fernando's eyes narrow in on the castform. it's a species he's unfamiliar with but far from worried about. just the way the pokemon enters the fray tells all that he needs to know. what he reads from the pokemon's body language is a hesitance that's riddled with fear. the same fear that bronwen had when her rapidash was handled.

will today be different?

he doubts it.

"trust is one thing."

he grants her the first move because it's irrelevant. utter dominance comes from defeating those with an advantage. her little opportunity means nothing in the face of practiced skill and vigorous talent.

"dependence is another."

INTENSE SUNLIGHT manifest above the batlefield and both sides are under the effect of SUNNY DAY. fernando takes this to note and pulls out his pokedex in response. he'll use the time to read up about castform while his pokemon handle their opponents. he's expects nothing less.

"battle routine set."

his charizard rises, gaining altitude as it rears its head back. rhydon crouches on its stocky legs, ready to move forward.

"execute."

the rhydon charges forward, mouth agape as it fires repeated volleys of ROCK BLAST at the dancing charizard. like most of fernando's pokemon, the rhydon doesn't maintain a steady aim at the opponent. instead, it leads with where the pokemon currently is and starts to spread out the trajectory of each blast, anticipation the flying pokemon to try and dodge the incoming boulders.

his charizard begins lets out repeated fireballs of FLAME BURST toward her charizard. they come from above and angle downward so they don't interfere with the ROCK BLAST, but even if they do, the attack doesn't have the punch to melt boulders. if anything, the FLAME BURST will spread into a conflagration, known for spreading upon impact.

like with all his battles, fernando starts with a standard opening, a wide spread attack to suppress his enemies and start off with an early advantage.

Her voice, for once, is unwavering. She's confident in her answer, she truly believes in it. [break][break]

Stormy watches, almost in awe, but also in unease as Fernando calls out battle tactics. He's formal, rigid, militaristic. He has a plan already, she can feel it. [break][break]

His Charizard rises even higher in the air, gaining altitude from her own. Wadjet finishes her dance just as rocks begin to fire in her direction. Stormy's mistake is what knocks her flat out of the sky. [break][break]

"Move, try to out-fly the blast!"[break][break]

Unfortunately, Wadjet flies into each oncoming rock, each one chipping away at her shoulders and face, eventually causing her to land on the ground with a tumble. She growls, flexing her wings to make sure they weren't damaged too badly.[break][break]

Stormy is agape in shock, processing what just happened.[break][break]

The flame burst explodes against the rocks, effectively creating a barrier for Wadjet to remain on the ground. But on the ground is where she's the most vulnerable.[break][break]

"Fire blast and flamethower, drive them back."[break][break]

Her orders may appear confident, but they're anything but. She's already lost this fight. [break][break]

Wadjet bellows, her roar magnified with the roar of flames as they pour from her mouth. The torrent of flames are meant to drive back her opponent while she climbs back into the air.[break][break]

Sol's fire blast is pointed towards the Rhydon, a feeble attempt to distract him.[break][break]

fernando spares the battle a glance but is ultimately uncaring. the moment the charizard lands on the ground spells the battles end. all they need to do is finish the job. what he's more concerned about is castform's pokedex entry. being able to shift the weather and forms accordingly sound like an interesting ability, something he's never encountered in person.

the combination of FIRE BLAST and FLAMETHROWER may boast their own power, amplified by the SUNNY DAY, but neither pokemon budge. it's not worth losing their tempo, their advantage of laying the first offensive move, in order to spend time dodging or blocking an attack they'll resist.

rhydon charges straight into the FIRE BLAST and enters striking distance of the barely airborne charizard. from up close, the ROCK BLAST will become harder to dodge with less distance between them and easier to aim from up close. large boulders continues to spew from the rhydon's mouth as it tries to pelt the charizard right back out of the sky. fernando's charizard maintains its distance, firing a blast of DRAGON RAGE at the same charizard from above.

She gasps, eyes wide with horror as she witnesses her next mistake. Her blood is boiling and her hands are shaking. Disappointment weighs her down and prevents her from calling out.[break][break]

Charizard is pinned to the ground yet again, unprepared for the Rhydon to burst through her flames and come through unscathed. Or rather, she hadn't expected it to happen so fast. Her dragon's dance had nothing on the agility of this heavy-footed beast.[break][break]

With a roar of pain, Wadjet stumbles mid-flight, claws having barely left the ground. Sol looks on in disappointment, unsure what to do to defend his partner. [break][break]

Stormy eventually speaks up, holding up a hand in defeat. She recalls Wadjet, who seems frustrated and unsatisfied with how the battle turned out. It's evident that the reason for their devastating loss is because of Stormy, not because of the Charizard's abilities.[break][break]
