the charizard maintains maximum distance, revolving around the rhydon in a circular manner. not only must it keep a distance, it must keep up a certain speed to maintain a range of evasion. "you may use ROCK BLAST now."

the pokemon have rehearsed the match prior and already know their plan of action. this isn't a battle to win but to display proper battle theory.

[attr="class","spiral"] the rhydon obeys her command and puts an arm forward. decent sized boulders form and launch from the pokemon's palm, following the trajectory of the pokemon's pointed arm. each projectile fires off with a decent velocity and they continue to fire, one being flung right after the other in a constant sequence.

the charizard speeds up and uses the significant spacing to anticipate the attack, plan a route to avoid the already airborne projectile, and grant it enough time to fly out of the attack's path. the distance is a pivotal factor in allowing the pokemon to dodge and as the ROCK BLASTS land harmlessly against the gym's walls, the charizard rears its head in retaliation. it fires off a quick sputter of DRAGON RAGE but doesn't take the time to allow the attack to charge up or aim it. doing so would slow it down too much. the pokemon opts for small, fast bursts of attacks to bombard the field below.

the results is the rhydon trying to chase after the charizard while it continues to carpet bomb the pokemon from above. the match reflects their first one with stomy's rapidash but this time the exception is that the rhydon isn't fast enough to weave through the attacks but has a long ranged counter of its own.

It reminded her of shotgun blasts with the way the rocks shattered the moment they fired. The projectiles fall harmlessly as the Charizard flies away. He had, of course, anticipated the attack and had prepared to move out of the way in time.[break][break]

The flying-type Pokemon bellows just as the Rhydon's arm falls to his side, finishing his attack. Stormy watches the dual-type dragon prepare for it's retaliation. It barely gives itself enough time to charge the dragon rage, and it seems to sputter out and die, only sending off weaker pulses of flame. [break][break]

It is mostly effective, however, at tearing up the ground where it lands, which is likely the reason behind using it.[break][break]

Rhydon chases after the flying Pokemon as more and more pulses of dragon rage pepper the ground below. Stormy recognizes the similarities between this display and her previous battle against Fernando. Rapidash had been able to outmaneuver and outrun most of the airborne attacks, but she was now beginning to understand the disadvantage she was at.[break][break]

[attr="class","spiral"]the lesson unfolds and the message becomes clearer the longer the battle takes place. sure, rhydon has the advantage on paper but execution determines the end results. it doesn't matter how effective rock type attacks are if they cannot land. between two even combatants eventually one is bound to hit the other. however, how long eventually turns out to be can differ between their choice of techniques. fernando's adept use of spacing prolongs it long enough for the charizard to chip away at rhydon with the repeated blasts of DRAGON RAGE. eventually it falls but unlike stormy's charizard, the work put in should provide fernando an easy knock out with his second pokemon.

they don't need to go that far because the lesson is clear. all battles are a two-part plan: first, compiling the resources necessary for victory, and second, pull through with the operation. fernando returns both pokemon and his patience for the activity dies along with the time he's spent.

"that is how charizard takes on rhydon."

his tone is blunt but the answer is factual.

When the dust settles, the victor is not the Pokemon Stormy had originally expected to win. So set in her ways that type advantages were the be-all, end-all of Pokemon battles, she is reluctantly surprised to see that the Rhydon had succumbed to the Charizard's repeated dragon rage.[break][break]

She lowers her arms from her face, brushing dust and dirt from her cheeks and mouth, squinting through the grit as it comes to a stand still. [break][break]

"Thank you for the lesson, I'll keep it mind."[break][break]

that marks the end of just one day out of the many that are to come. training someone from scratch does not come easy and patience, something fernando lacks, is the only thing that'll structure her learning into applying. against his own wishes, he pursues this route because the consequences of her actions, as naive and well-natured as they were, cornered him into a position that only her redemption can remedy.

"that'll be all."

the first of many and fernando can feel himself stretched thin already.
