Personality: Knowledgable, impulsive, eccentric, and deathly afraid of toasters, Howard Slayte is a rising star in the archaeology world who is in a constant and grueling war with crippling debt.[break][break]

Now, wait just a moment! You might be thinking that this might be for some noble cause, such as footing a loved one’s medical bill or simply being too generous when it comes to charity. Let this be perfectly clear: Howard Slayte is an individual with poor financial decision-making skills whose flaws are made worse by his field’s inconsistent ability to provide financial stability.[break][break]

“This is an authentic statuette taken from Unova’s Abyssal Ruins. It’d be a shame not to buy it. No, no. Do not worry about the price. I’ll be receiving a grant from Hoenn in a few days, anyway.” [break][break]

That was three months ago.[break][break]

Nonetheless, Howard is a genius when it comes to archaeology and ancient languages, having traveled as far as his bank account can allow for archaeological expeditions. Despite these exploits, Howard also struggles to operate his PC and believes that convection ovens are magic machines from the future. As intelligent as he is, having to submit a paper virtually for his final class in university almost resulted in a mental breakdown.[break][break]

His employment with Team Rocket is the result of a constant struggle within Howard. He loves archaeology, and believes that many pieces should be placed in museums. He also believes that most museums are tourist traps, and therefore are best used by those who can appreciate their value. Despite his internal struggles, he loyally works alongside Team Rocket to pay the rent, and to continue his expeditions.[break][break]

Howard’s past is well documented, having been born to a fossil researcher and jewelry cutter in Rustboro, giving Howard an attraction to ancient relics, fossils, and other shiny things. Many of his transcripts can be pulled from various institutions he has worked under, such as an internship for an archaeology dig that was jointly sponsored by Devon Corporation and Slateport’s Oceanic Museum. Howard’s talents were praised, and he expected himself to receive a job offer following the conclusion of his internship. [break][break]

“Any day now, they’ll surely recognize my talent and offer me a job!” He proclaimed as he sat by his telephone for forty-six hours before collapsing in exhaustion.[break][break]

Despite these constant hurdles, Howard often funds his own expeditions off money he gets from digs, though he could not afford his own aides or assistants, resulting in him exploring dangerous areas on his own. Due to the dangerous nature of the world, this has often resulted in various medical bills that he foots to his providers.[break][break]

Eventually, all these bills caught up with him. Despite his accomplishments in the field and knowledge of ancient languages, he had still not procured a position that would keep him financially sound until he was twenty-five. At a lecture on ancient civilizations and antiques that he was speaking on, he was approached by a man who offered Howard a solution to his problems. Despite Howard’s initial confusion on how the man knew of his financial struggles, Howard followed him into Team Rocket when he received his electric bill the next day.[break][break]

Currently, Howard aids in the research and extraction of valuable artifacts across Hoenn that Team Rocket can sell on the black market. Certain artifacts aren’t recorded on dig logs, some vanish all together, and some are recorded as entirely different from what was actually discovered.[break][break]

Despite this, Howard’s love for the field is genuine.
