"yeah, what's up?"

unlike matias, kyle feels no tension. the love he had for him during the forgotten twenty years was indistinguishable from the love they had as friends. he already considers him a brother, someone above blood ties, after all.

whatever weight matias feels in his heart was different from what kyle felt at the moment.

"if you're wondering about what happened, it's similar to the darkrai thing years ago, i think." he crosses his arms. "the difference is everyone remembered that dream, but i don't think i did with this one."

it's a guess to his question, but a shot in the dark nonetheless.

if he attempts to recall certain facts, he probably could. a retelling of actual events that happened in the dream, however, were out of the question.

it's a genuine question. kyle clasps his hair as he starts thinking of reasons why matias could recall while he couldn't. the expression of frustration quickly changes to a carefree smile.

there was no reason to fuss over it, he thinks, since it was just a dream in the end.

"i... don't? i know there was a fight though, and constellations and the weird prophecy. i can, uh, recall that. is that enough?"

what more was there to know. it was a silly dream for him, like an actual fantasy he's always had being vicariously realized in the form of thoughts in his head during sleep.

"oh, and this too." he pulls out an intricate knife from his belt, sheathed, and shows it to matias. "i think this was a gift from someone? would it be related? it certainly didn't bring this from home."

confusion hits him. words that weren't relevant in the mission started coming out of matias, though he does feel the emotion from it. it's foreign, and something he would have said to other people, but not him.

"matias..."

there's a loss for words. while he could have fluently string together a message that conveys his thoughts on the matter, and bring the tone where it was easily digestible, kyle has lost that skill.

not that he had an idea he was capable of doing it eventually.

"what are you talking about? you know i'd die for you too, and i don't say that to everyone."

sworn loyalty. a family together. these words were easily pieced together, but not when his headspace was still on the subject of finishing up work before going home.

though his voice raises slightly it does not ever venture into hurtful territories. no longer does he show the same aggression many have experienced. his demeanor is grounded in a reality that is fading.[break][break]

for someone who doesn't remember, what he was hearing doesn't make sense. context clues can only tell him as much, but it's when matias squeezes his hand did he get a semblance of a message.

"what if it was a dream, matias? a simulation of what could've been in another timeline. that's not really surprising given what hoenn has gone through."

if he was this vehement with this deep of an expression, something that clearly wasn't fabricated if he knows his friend well, then kyle has no reason to believe otherwise.

"i have someone else in this reality. a king would never go back on his word."

the words came out naturally without a thought.

kyle falls silent. he has no answer for this that wouldn't upset matias.

"i'm sorry."

the response wasn't in character. it felt forced, like an answer that was provided only to end the conversation. it was the words that left matias' lips multiple times, and kyle knew it held the same grief that washed over his previous fiance.

it was matias' style, but it won't be kyle's.

"-but it's not like what you're saying right now is true."

he sheathes his knife and holds his hands against matias' face.

"you're still important for this kyle, alright? it might not end well for you, as usual, but you'll bounce back." he gives a light, playful slap on his cheek as he lets go. "tell me. what made you fall for him?"

this wouldn't be matias' first loss, nor the second or so. it certainly wouldn't be his last.

kyle feels bad for contributing to the number, but...

"were you glad you experienced it?" he asks.

it's an experience, like everything else. whether it's real or not was irrelevant to the definition of the very feeling matias had felt.

"you're not new to hoenn. illusions, dreams, other universes— these things happen a lot, for better or for worse." he smiles, shifting the mood to something positive.

he locks his eyes with matias, a certain kinship prompting him to say the right words despite logically not knowing how. pragmatism keeps him grounded to facts, and it's the only thing this kyle lopez can work with at the moment.

"if you're a different person now, then i guess it actually happened— that it's real." there were minute differences, but kyle manages to pick out quirks that wouldn't have been prompted by the matias he knew.

"and i still do love you, you know, as a friend and a brother. it's not the same, but it's good enough, right? i'm not really fun or free, or able to do things i want anyways."

the king of the day loses his way with words as kyle fumbles on his to make the most coherent cheering up speech he can muster.

kyle chuckles.

"the way you talk hasn't actually changed."

promises. pretty words. flattery. brashness.

matias follows a pattern depending on how he views the other person, and they follow the same direction as what he was doing right now.

"but i can see what you meant when you said you've changed." a better person, or so he says.

it's the ability to let go that separates the two versions together. he's certain matias would've pressured him to keep their old life, violently if need be, had he been as he was before.

this matias knows how to be cute. it's awkward and unfiltered, but it has its charms. he can see how it's made an impact on him, but he doubts that's the only thing that shifted their story from the other side that way.

"do you want to go home for now?" he offers. "i'm pretty sure you're hurting talking to me like this."
