THE BORDER IS A MOUNTAINOUS PURGATORY OF MUTED SEPIA SMOKE. By floating islands, translucent bridges soar through the realm toward the heavens. Tall stone spires jut out from the spiritual mist. In the sky, the wisps of spirits can be seen heading toward their final destination before the afterlife...[break][break]

Curiously, there are four broken seals embedded in four mountains. Though Adrian Malcolm and YVELTAL may have seen their location upon their unceremonious entry, the spirit realm has shifted since their last visit, rendering each broken seal far apart from each other.

It had been a while, hadn't it?[break][break]

The fight that Tempest and Cillian Quinn had when he had first started to explore this place... it seemed like it was so long ago. So insignificant in the grand scheme of things. There were still issues from that not fully sorted out. Temp still had a martyr complex and didn't fear death like most people did. Yet they had been through so much in such a short amount of time.... or, not so short? Twenty years lost....[break][break]

With his body wrapped in a functioning Sygna Suit this time, Tempest knows they can stay longer.[break][break]

But what is there left to find?[break][break]

Staring out over the landscape, a sickly wind blusters.[break][break]

"Have you ever been to the sky islands?" In the distance Tempest points them out. From here, just specks that can barely be seen. Odd, floating pieces of land as if the earth had been picked up and placed there. Fountains of water fall from unknown sources.

Cillian shakes his head. "No. Have you?"[break][break]

When he turns to his husband, there is none of the resentment and bitterness he'd once felt upon setting foot in this place. Galar, or the memory of it, had drained him of those old emotions and replaced them with grief. He no longer cares that his husband had to return to this place. He only cares that they're together; together, they can weather any storm.[break][break]

Lugia's distant shadow grows, suggesting her return.[break][break]

"I feel... strange." He can't quite put words to the dread that hollows out his chest. "Do you feel that?"[break][break]

Fingers lace with his husband's, silently seeking comfort.

A shake of the head. Temp had explored many places here but the sky islands were still a mystery.[break][break]

Yet, Cillian Quinn asks another question.[break][break]

Tempest has to focus on his feelings in general. There was always this hollow, open place that had been carved out of his chest since their return from the memory. It took up so much space in his mind that it was hard to focus on much else.[break][break]

Yet....[break][break]

There was a .... tugging?[break][break]

Cillian would see it when Tempest looked over. It was a ripple of finger prints over Temp's skin. Yet, he was oblivious. Just a small curve of a frown and narrowed brows. The moment was so over so quick that Cillian could convince himself he imagined it.[break][break]

"It feels... like I'm being pulled. Is that what you feel?"

Time spent in a memory of Galar had dulled Cillian's anger, his fear. Yet the latter returns as an ice-cold knife to the gut as he spies a ripple across his husband's skin. He blinks, and it's gone, yet he's certain of what he'd seen.[break][break]

They have no choice but to continue. Rocket's orders.[break][break]

Swallowing his anxieties, he keeps it to himself. There was no need to worry Temp, not when there was nothing to be done.[break][break]

"No," he answers truthfully. "It's more like..."[break][break]

He struggles to find words for the mounting despair. It feels as if there's some unseen force bearing down on him, suffocating.[break][break]

"I feel like I'm going to die." He states it so calmly as to almost be comical, but the worry in his eyes betray his true feelings. "Like I'm being watched, or something. Hunted. It's..." He shudders, skin crawling.

Tempest just knits his brow in something like confusion.[break][break]

"Isn't that what everyone feels like?"[break][break]

All the time? is left unsaid in the statement. The two of them had talked about the deep beast lurking in Tempest's soul and mind before. It had not been a pleasant conversation. Then so many things had happened at once it was sort of... forgotten about.[break][break]

Perhaps it would be some relief that that darkness had never called for Temp in the twenty years lost.[break][break]

Or maybe it meant something else.[break][break]

Either way, Temp turns and opens his mouth to ask something else.[break][break]

Only to let out a choked noise and collapse on the ground. A small shadow of a creature looms behind him, red eyes staring up at Cillian.[break][break]

Tempest doesn't move.

"Uh, no." Surprise blunts his answer, but Cillian's quick to soften both tone and expression as he affirms, "No, love."[break][break]

His heart aches for Tempest Quinn. The feeling is so oppressive, so overwhelming, he can't imagine what it must feel like to contend with such dread on a daily basis. He knows that there is self-loathing mixed in for his husband, a deep-seated certainty that he'd be better off dead.[break][break]

He is about to reach for his husband's hand, to offer some paltry comfort in this awful place, when Temp collapses like a puppet with strings cut.[break][break]

"Temp!"[break][break]

Anguish turns to rage as he lays eyes on the red-eyed creature.[break][break]

"What did you do?"[break][break]

It giggles, vanishes. And Cillian crumples.

Everything wavers at the edges.[break][break]

The thing about the Border was it was always smoggy and vaguely faded in sepia tones, like an old photograph of times long forgotten. It was nostalgic while being sad. A strange vision.[break][break]

But in death, or spirit, or whatever was happening- the place is bright and sharp with color.[break][break]

Perhaps humans still living were never meant to see the proper view of this place.[break][break]

Cillian Quinn would find Tempest cowering in shadow. He is streaked with dirt, hair knotted, suit ripped. As if more time than the scant few moments between his husband's collapse and his own.[break][break]

The shadow cast over him is dark and physical. Much like Cillian's shadow mist at the edges, not something solid while still having weight. It's massive, a heart beating to it's own rhythm and pouring out sorrow.[break][break]

Cillian would hear it in a sweet echo, every pulse.[break][break]

Haaaaate you.... stupid. So stupid. Hate you. Just die. Just die already. Give up. Hate you. Stupid. Worthless. Less than worthless. Die.[break][break]

Tempest shakes and grips his head, eyes wide and unblinking, curled in on himself. It is like he can't see Cillian. A dark energy blocking and eating away at his spirit.[break][break]

A shadow lingers over Cillian as well.

Trembling, oppressed by some spirit of nightmares, Cillian is momentarily swallowed by his own thoughts. They echo in this place, every bit as tangible as the self.[break][break]

Everyone leaves. How long until he leaves, too?[break][break]

His last thoughts had been of Temp, and insecurities linger there as well. He does his best to shake them off, reminds himself that this might be a very manifestation of the FEAR that often hunts here.[break][break]

A spark of bitter HATRED blooms in its place.[break][break]

You're better off alone. No one can hurt you, then.[break][break]

"Shut up," Cillian snaps at nothing, shaking his head violently. His attention snaps to his husband's crumpled form. He looks worse, so much worse than he should in such a short span of time since Cil had laid eyes upon him last. He realises he can hear Temp's demons as loud as his own. "Block it out! This place is messing with us, it..."[break][break]

He trails off, possessed with a sudden urge to join the spirits swirling around them. For one who has never craved death, it is alarming how certain he feels that this is the right choice.[break][break]

No one will hurt you ever again, the insidious spirits whisper. Safer, here.[break][break]

Join us.[break][break]

He takes a step, then gets knocked flat by the force of Lugia's HURRICANE. He cuts his palms on sharp stones, the pain of it grounding him.[break][break]

"Thanks," he grits out to the shadow that wheels above, shrieking at the spirits who'd dare to claim her vessel as their own. "Temp! You're not worthless or stupid; don't fucking listen to them."

Oh, of course Tempest hears it.[break][break]

Much like before, he doesn't acknowledge it directly. But the orb over his head grows larger, well fed. Like electric sparks meeting, it and the one over Cillian Quinn connect in fleeting sparks. The whispers on Tempest's side grow louder, wilder, a fever pitch of excitement in high tones.[break][break]

Hates you, hates you, he hates you! Stupid stupid thinking you could trick him into loving you! You'll never be good enough! Ha! May as well do it! May as well save him the agony of looking at you! Stupid! Haha!"[break][break]

Tempest's face twists, broken and desperate and sad. It rises with a fever pitch.[break][break]

Grows from some type of acceptance into fury.[break][break]

Words, snarled from his own lips- but Cillian will just see something like when a TV is muted. From the force of his words, he is speaking. But nothing will meet Cillian's ears but a sharp silence.[break][break]

Until it rises like a fever pitch with Lugia's winds. It feels like glass shattering between them.[break][break]

"-usband again! Leave him the fuck alone leave me the fuck alone! Shut up shut up shut up!"[break][break]

Tempest's ball of negativity wobbles, unstable. Then like an expanding sun, it grows and grows.[break][break]

Opening his eyes, Temp seems to finally see Cillian. His yelling stops on a half note.[break][break]

The bubble engulfs them both and pops.[break][break]

Tempest pushes himself up from the ground.[break][break]

His hand feels tight and strange when he pushes himself upwards.[break][break]

And stares at himself on the ground.

Words spoken in anger fill him with warmth, but Cillian's consumed by the expanding presence before he can immediately reply.[break][break]

He feels strange as he shifts from where he'd fallen to the ground, chalks it up to being disoriented.[break][break]

"You didn't trick—"[break][break]

He breaks off with a startled noise as the voice that rises in his throat is not his own. It doesn't quite sound like Temp's, either, for your voice never sounds the same in your throat as it does to another.[break][break]

He looks around, alarmed, and sees himself.[break][break]

"Oh, what the fuck."[break][break]

Instinct sees him call upon Lugia's boon, but nothing happens.

It takes a moment, when his own body moves, speaks, and a Galarian accent drips from his own lips.[break][break]

Is that what I sound like? Temp thinks briefly.[break][break]

He looks down at his hands and sees scars not his own. But familiar, still, from nights spent loving tracing them before bed. Pushing himself up, Temp flexes his hands and looks down to touch his own clothes, his own body, before looking again at Cillian Quinn. Who has, somehow, hijacked his body.[break][break]

"Um... what's...?"[break][break]

A flicker of panic fills him.[break][break]

It is followed by smoke.[break][break]

The dark ropes coil around him before spreading out into the air around them. Not quite a smog machine but certainly noticeable. It rises with Temp's emotions.[break][break]

Something curls at the very center of him.[break][break]

It is connection. It is heat. It is poison. The infinity energy from Cillian's bond with Lugia ravages him from the inside. Was this what Cillian dealt with all the time? This... pain? This ghost of something greater than himself? It wants to fill the chasm in his chest, mold to it and make it something worse, but intrinsically rejects him.[break][break]

Lugia's bond is not with Tempest. As any immune system does, it rejects the invader.[break][break]

He can feel her, but it's garbled and strange, an echo that clips and cuts as she searches his mind for something she won't find. There is raw fury and it flood into him, angers him, but that also threatens to tear him into two.[break][break]

Tempest doubles over and hold his stomach, Cillian's stomach, as the infinity energy attacks him to restore a balance.[break][break]

Smoke plumes like a wildfire around him now.[break][break]

"How," It's hissed through teeth not his own, in a voice as familiar as it is unfamiliar. "Do you live like this?"[break][break]

Cillian watches himself collapse.[break][break]

SHADOW MIASMA spreads through their surroundings, wild and uncontrolled. It heeds not to his command, but to the frenzied desperation of another. Lugia's PRESSURE threatens to suffocate him, the absence of her blessing stripping him of his immunity.[break][break]

Thin breaths promote panic as he watches his husband, but also himself, falter beneath the surging tides of an infinity storm.[break][break]

"Lugia!"[break][break]

He cries out with Temp's voice and Cillian's own accent, having failed to reach the legend through their psychic bond.[break][break]

She turns her cold, red gaze upon him. Her fury, though he cannot feel it as Temp does in that moment, is no less evident.[break][break]

"That's not me! That's Temp! Something's wrong." He gestures sharply to his own doubled-over image. "Can you please stop killing my husband?"[break][break]

He feels her PRESSURE in his mind, now, and cedes to it in spite of her crippling rage and his own deep-seated instinct to rebel against the psychic force. He lets her search a body that isn't his own for the thoughts that are, the familiarity of conscience in a foreign shell.[break][break]

She retracts her influence from them both with a reverberating command.[break][break]

Like a bubble popping, the influence of Lugia and her blessing stops. It doesn't completely recede, sitting as a burning force in his chest, but it's enough for him to catch his breath.[break][break]

It's no wonder. I'm not right.[break][break]

The thought briefly flits across his mind his (Cillian Quinn's) heart slowly still down to some form of calmness again. It is not an insult to himself in this sudden understanding of the situation. Lugia's Blessing had been shaped to fit Cillian's mind. Tempest's was like trying to shove a puzzle piece into the wrong place. His mind rubbed against edges that Cillian would never feel.[break][break]

The smoke still rises from his skin, distorting him in it's thickness, but he reaches out to grasp Cillian's (his own) hand. As if worried the other might lose him in the fog. The hand twitches slightly, him trying to stretch scarred skin too far too quick.[break][break]

From the darkness of the shadows Tempest is creating, red eyes peer at the two of them. One moment gone, one moment there. The Marshadow tilts it's head to the side, curious as how the two survived the reaping it had sent them against. It understands the heart of things far more than a creature should here.[break][break]

It had seen the call for death that lingered in Tempest's very heart and had sought to give him a mercy. The blond was only a bonus. Death comes to everyone eventually, after all, and who was she to deny an early one?[break][break]

But she simply lingers.[break][break]

Able to actually breathe now, Tempest takes a shaky one. A small smile is cracked, unfamiliar on this face.[break][break]

"I think..." He clears his throat, tasting the echo of a voice that wasn't his. "I think I'm okay now."[break][break]

A breath.[break][break]

"But... how the fuck do you deal with this? All the time? Constantly?" Did Cillian even feel it?
