Just as Shalin lightly kicked Volt's sides, the Jolteon about faced, whizzing down the trail opposite the one he was going to. "Wheeeee!" Shalin cried, caught in the rush of the sudden swerve. Her optimism grew more cautious as Volt accelerated. She had seen Josh ride his own Jolteon before; Blinky could move at staggering speeds.

Shalin and her Eeveelutions whizzed past several Treecko, the girl remembering the trail well. If not much had changed, she would need to get to the trail before bagging another Eevee. She hoped to find another giant one that she ended up evolving into Volt beneath her. For now, she did her best to enjoy the high speed trail ride, though it was getting uncomfortably fast for her. As much as Josh pushed her to get into racing, she simply could not handle sustained speed like he could.

The longer Shalin sped down the trail, the more dizziness set in. She could tell Volt was holding back a lot of his speed. While he was not bred for racing like Josh's Blinky was, Jolteon were still incredibly fast. Even taking all the needed precautions, it took a certain kind of bravery to ride one. Though their agility was not to be discounted, their raw speed was their strength, able to outrun even full-gallop Rapidash.

After passing a large swarm of Torchic, she was swaying so much that she could no longer maintain her balance. Reining Volt to a stop, she slid down from the Jolteon, dizzily walked toward Tinder the Shiny Flareon, and switched ride Pokémon to the fire-type.

Shalin couldn't have picked a worse time to switch to her Flareon; the trail gave way to a marsh, Tinder squealing as one of many Mudkip splashed muddy water a little too close to the Flareon and rider. The trail itself was unstable, forcing him to tediously alternate between a trot and a canter to avoid tripping. After shaking as much of it loose as he could, the Shiny fire-type was vigilant the rest of the way through the wetland, DETECTING any Pokémon that were a bit too close and looked ready to splash them again.

Once they were clear of the wetlands, what mud remained quickly dried against the heat the Eeveelution radiated. The rider's eyes remained likewise vigilant for Eevee, anticipating having a complete set of her own at her Romping Grounds in Petalburg.

A delta at the end of the wetland gave way to a river, Tinder appreciative of the riverbank's more solid ground. As he ran near the moving body of water, several Feebas leaping out of it to see what was disturbing them, Tinder let out a yelp from one of them SPLASHING him with quite a bit of water. Shalin moved her hands to the end of the Flareon's saddle and held on with everything she had, the Shiny Flareon kicking with great strength trying to shake the toxic liquid off. To fire-types, water counted as a toxic liquid.

As much fun as she was having wrangling her Flareon, Shalin didn't want to do it at Tinder's expense. She let go, the next kick sending her flying off and toward the base of a tree. Its gently-curving roots saved her from a nasty impact with the trunk. With her Flareon hurt and her Jolteon too fast for her for the time being, she recalled him and whistled for Waft, her Leafeon, to carry her the rest of the way through the trail. The grass-type was a much more gentle, though still speedy, mount that would get her through the rest of the trail at a good pace.

The trail became more flat and pleasant for Waft to run across, Shalin's eyes shifting across the impressive Safari Zone's wide variety of terrain. She set the Leafeon's reins down, trusting the Shiny grass-type to follow the trail and keep an eye out for the Eevee she was looking for, now that they were in the flatlands where the species could be found.

Seeing a swarm of Pikachu at play, Shalin took out a clump of sweet Berries and hurled it into their center. The ravenous electric-types crawled over it, serving as a distraction from Waft's combat-inducing leaf scent. Once she was upwind, she slowed her mount to a trot and watched the horde from a distance, humming as the smallest of them lifted one of the Berries to head level and took a big bite out of it. They must really have been hungry!

Waft sounded a mew to get the Captain-elect's attention. She was looking down the wrong side of the trail. Turning her head, Shalin saw what she was looking for. There were so many Eevee, and on the west side, one that would be a perfect match for Waft and her other Eeveelution giants! The Leafeon's scent captured the large female's attention, captivated by the three Shiny Eeveelutions' sheen and size.

Love alone would not a capture make, though, and with how skittish Waft was when Shalin captured him, battle wasn't an option. Volt had it covered, though! YAWNING from the exertion of his speedy run, the Eevee's eyelids became heavy, as did those of Tinder, Waft, and his rider. She slid down from her grass-type mount and touched the now-sleeping Pokémon with a Safari Ball. Before she could make it back to the yawning Pokémon, she, too, passed out with her new catch pinned beneath her.

When she came to, she was in the Warden's lobby, the lightless windows an indication of how much time had passed. A ride through the jungle by night too dangerous, she left Waft carry her to Lilycove City, where she would sleep through the night -- and half the morning, to her dismay.
