Cillian has kept an eye out for the man since reading his report. It would be as simple as summoning the Beast to his office, but such a formal setting might prove detrimental. His office was designed to be intimidating, suffocating, and while he doubted that a man such as Zev was overly affected by the environment, the oppressive space was hardly conducive to amicable conversation.[break][break]

If, indeed, this would be amicable at all.[break][break]

"Drink with me."[break][break]

Though it might seem a friendly invitation, there is no question lilting its end. It is not phrased as a request.[break][break]

Cillian himself nurses top-shelf Galarian whiskey, though he sips it slowly so as not to succumb to its effects. Ice floats in the amber liquid, clinking against the side of the glass as he lifts it.[break][break]

He gives pause to allow Zev to speak first, should he wish.[break][break]

He hides his own discomfort behind an ever-present mask of professionalism.

Zev stood a few feet away from the large bar in the main foyer of Team Rocket's submarine. Dressed in dark clothing, his hands stuffed in his pockets, he cut an unassuming figure amidst the hustle and bustle within the headquarters.[break][break]

But grunts and executives alike gave him a wide berth, recognizing him for who he was—even if they had no idea what he'd become.[break][break]

Cillian knew, though. Or, at least, he had an inkling, based on the report Zev had submitted a few days ago. The Beast wondered what thoughts ran through the underboss' head at that moment, but in a detached way, as if he was observing a swarm of Durant from afar.[break][break]

"Sure."[break][break]

He took the stool next to Cillian. The bartender, familiar with the hitman's preferences, automatically poured an old fashioned. But Zev did not drink it right away.[break][break]

Eating, drinking, exercise, and even sleeping still felt foreign to him, despite the fact that not more than a few days ago, they were as natural as breathing.[break][break]

"I expected you would. You and Sato probably have the most interest in it, and she emailed me right away." Zev hadn't replied yet, though. She could wait. Other matters took priority.

Now, Cillian takes in Zev's appearance with new scrutiny. He doesn't look any different than he had before... but that didn't mean things hadn't changed. Cillian's own avatarship had not changed him physically, either.[break][break]

Zev did not fault Cillian for his question. Humans were naturally curious, a trait that helped them survive thousands of years of evolution and calamity. And despite being a deeply private person who did not like when others pried, Zev knew he would hear the question again and again.[break][break]

From the scientists wishing to study him, from those who genuinely worried about him, and from those who feared what his Avatarship meant.[break][break]

"I'm fine." Finally, he picked up his glass and sipped from it. The burn of the whisky down his throat was a familiar pleasure. "The encounter put some stress on my body, but I've had enough rest since then."[break][break]

It was a true enough answer. Whether Cillian found it satisfactory was another matter entirely.

Rarely does Cillian find true satisfaction in the answers of others. Just as people were curious, most were cautious. They would withhold anything that might make them look bad, or strange. The underboss himself was no exception.[break][break]

So he doesn't find Zev's answer satisfactory, but nor is it surprising.[break][break]

Nursing his own drink slowly, more for the taste than for the burn, he considers his approach.[break][break]

"And the psychological effects?"[break][break]

Zev was careful with his emotions, but Cillian knew well he was not devoid of them. Having seen Necrozma change Chu-e so completely, he wondered at what it might be doing to the Beast.

Zev glanced sideways at Cillian, regarding him with a scrutinizing blue stare for a long moment, weighing his options.[break][break]

He had no desire whatsoever to reveal the truth to the underboss. The newfound connection with Necrozma was a highly personal and private matter; the eons of suffering underwent by Zev's patron was something no mere human could fathom—or even survive.[break][break]

But Zev understood that he needed Cillian to trust him. Otherwise, his goals—Necrozma's goals—would never come to pass.[break][break]

The Beast set down his glass. At the same time, void-black crystals rose from below his skin to cover his wrist and hand. "The psychological effects are… interesting."[break][break]

Spreading his fingers, Zev watched as the shards crawled over each digit, wrapping them in the familiar carapace until they became razor-sharp claws.[break][break]

"Have you ever considered that this planet is only a speck of dust hanging in a vast, empty void, and the existence of everything on it passes in the mere blink of an eye compared to the age of the universe itself?"[break][break]

He flexed his armored hand, as if examining it for the first time.

The presence of the crystal is unnerving to one such as Cillian, who had numerous times been attacked by the parasite they called Necrozma. Fingers twitch with the urge to reach for a pokeball, but he remains otherwise still.

A few blinks pass in silence as he considers the weight of Zev's question.
[break][break]

"I tend to avoid the existential crisis," he remarks with dry humour. But he's not a stupid man. "You've been considering it of late, I imagine."
[break][break]

Curiosity burns through him, an insatiable hunger, but he forces himself to allow Zev to lead the conversation. The less it felt like an interrogation, perhaps, the more his colleague might be willing to divulge.

"No. We know it." Ever since Necrozma had opened wide the psychic link between itself and Zev, he felt everything it felt, knew everything it knew.[break][break]

Of course, much of it was incomprehensible to him. He could not put into words how it felt to know thousands of years of existence, let alone the agony of its wrongness. Nor could he begin to describe the vast gulf of time and space that was both intimately familiar and exceedingly alien.[break][break]

Zev turned his head to look straight at Cillian, revealing the bloom of crystals along the far side of his face that hadn't been there moments earlier.[break][break]

"Humans are such a fragile species, Quinn. But you're stubborn, too. Resourceful. As frustrating as it is at times, we can't help but admire it."[break][break]

The Beast sat back in his bar stool, his drink forgotten.[break][break]

"We know you're concerned about us. About what we'll do to your precious speck of dust." His sudden smile did not reach his eyes. "Don't worry. Hoenn is important to us, too."[break][break]

It reminds him of jayden cross and Elisabeth Fiorelli, their patrons' will communicated through their lips. It reminds him of Chu-e Choi trying to kill him, of the insistence that he was starving.[break][break]

Externally, he remains calm.[break][break]

"You have a funny way of expressing that admiration." Though level, there's a hard edge to his tone. It had almost killed Lugia, once. It had almost killed him multiple times. But it was right. He was stubborn. Resourceful. "Hoenn isn't my only concern. You know well who I am, who I serve."[break][break]

A note of amusement crept into Zev's smile. Cillian had no way of knowing how much of Zev's speech contained his own thoughts and how much of it was an interpretation of Necrozma's thoughts and emotions.[break][break]

In truth, the Blinding One did not care for humanity one bit. It was its Avatar who had begrudging admiration for those lesser than him, as evidenced by his long-standing working relationship with Team Rocket.[break][break]

"And we have no reason to change our standing with you," Zev said, referring to the crime syndicate. "You and I never put our relationship into words, but there's no point pretending it is nothing more than a contract."[break][break]

He leveled an even, unbothered gaze at Cillian. "We use each other. You have resources we need, and in turn, we provide services. Isn't that right?"

Perhaps it was not the answer Cillian expected, but it was an honest answer—at least partially. Zev had said the same to howard slayte, but not in the same way. Not with the same words.[break][break]

"Team Rocket is not our enemy," the Beast continued in explanation. "In fact, we have a common one: the DRK Triad. We would see them obliterated from the face of Hoenn and all other universes.[break][break]

"As you know well, they've chosen Hoenn as their battleground, so we'll remain for as long as need requires it."

It's a tamer answer than he expects, and yet he can't find comfort in it.[break][break]

"The Boss wouldn't like that."[break][break]

That Zev was an avatar likely wouldn't stop declan walsh from declaring open season on a defector; it hadn't saved Remiel Calcifet, after all.[break][break]

In truth, Cillian would much rather see Zev disappear into the depths of whatever other universe Necrozma sought to devour, so long as it left him and Rocket alone. But, as always, his desires came second to that of Walsh. Loyalty chained him here for good or ill.[break][break]

He deflects with dry humour. "But who knows? Maybe wiping out the Triad will put him in a better mood."

Walsh is as insignificant as you are, Zev thought but knew better than to voice. Instead, he inclined his head in acknowledgement of Cillian's statement. The other man's attempt at humor suggested that Zev's answers were good enough, and the interrogation could come to an end.[break][break]

But not the suspicion. He knew better to assume that Cillian would stop regarding him with wariness and caution, especially considering the underboss' history with Necrozma.[break][break]

"We'll just have to see," Zev agreed. He stepped down from the bar stool, indicating his desire to leave. "Now, unless you have any other concerns you want to bring up, I'm heading out. I have a bar to close."
