Only a few days after his conversation with Cillian Quinn at the open bar in the submarine's main foyer, Zev found himself seated there again, one hand wrapped around a whisky glass. He had just finished another meeting in the laboratory; a drink on the way out seemed like a good idea.[break][break]

Footsteps drew him from his thoughts. Glancing over, Zev saw a familiar face, even though he hadn't crossed paths with the person in a while.[break][break]

"Beckett."[break][break]

Zev took another sip from his glass, wondering if the underboss had read his report yet. If Theo had any concerns he wanted to voice, as Cillian had.

The bartender promptly poured drinks for both men. Zev finished the rest of his first drink in one swig and set the empty glass down. He did not, however, pick up the second glass yet.[break][break]

"Better than ever," he said to Theo.[break][break]

And it was the truth. Ever since Zev shed the inane civilian persona that shackled him to humanity's mundanity, he felt more like his real self than he had in the past four years.[break][break]

The Rocket Beast tilted his head at his superior, though the thought of existing on a hierarchy below others tasted like ash from a cold hearth on his tongue. "What are you up to these days?"[break][break]

Perhaps the question came off as small talk, but it was not. Zev was curious to know what exactly underbosses did with their time.

A single nod of his head indicated that Zev was indeed familiar with the recent losses of their ranks. Grunts were easily replaced, however, no matter if they were lost through death or defection.[break][break]

"Well enough. I think the lie would be obvious if I said there wasn't an adjustment. At least we benefit from not being nearly beaten to death like Cross was."[break][break]

Not that Zev could die. As long as he was armored, anything that struck him with enough force broke on impact.[break][break]

The Beast finally picked up his glass and took a sip, waiting to see if Theo would probe further about Zev's mental state, as Cillian had, or if the underboss had a different set of questions to ask.

Theo's question took Zev back to the meeting at the Cave of Origin before he and the other upper brass had been interrupted by Chien-Pao. declan walsh had asked that same question to start off the discussion.[break][break]

"I believe the consensus had been the DRK Triad," Zev said, half-turning in his seat to look at Theo. A flicker of annoyance had entered his face, but it was not directed at the underboss. "We know the least about them, and they have powers unknown to us."[break][break]

Not for the first time since his return from Ultra Space, Zev's thoughts turned to the way the woman in black had done nothing to deflect his attack, yet he hadn't been able to touch her. His expression darkened at the memory.[break][break]

"Or has leadership decided there is an even bigger threat?" he asked Theo, referring not only to him but to the other underbosses and Walsh as well.

The implication of Theo's words was obvious: Zev himself could be the gravest threat to Team Rocket if he did not cooperate. If he was not forthcoming with information. And if the crime syndicate deemed him such, he would face enemies at every turn.[break][break]

A flash of dark crystal rippled across his left cheek and vanished just as quickly.[break][break]

"We understand your caution, Beckett, but we are not interested in being your enemy," Zev said, his tone distant and cold. "In fact, we have a common enemy in the DRK Triad. Possibly others."[break][break]

The memory of an enormous, skeletal body dripping with poison flashed across his mind.

Yes, Zev thought at once, without any doubt in his mind. He'd already wiped out a different civilization as a consequence of his patron's demands.[break][break]

"It's more nuanced than that," he said instead, sighing. "How can I put it into simple words?" The Beast took another sip of his whisky as he mused for a moment, then said, almost casually, "It doesn't care enough to kill you."[break][break]

He didn't know if Theo would find that statement reassuring. But it was an approximation of the truth, even if it wasn't the whole truth.[break][break]

"You're not its target. The devastation it caused here and in Galar was the result of undirected frenzy. Now that I am involved, I can direct Necrozma's destructive nature in support of Team Rocket's goals.[break][break]
