“I don’t want people to call me a hero, Ma’am.” His voice is quiet, urgent. He pleads not with a woman, but with a grand historical record. “When I went to Galar last year with Gwyar Wledig, found this book. It said our species are myth-makers. Worst thing we ever did was make myths about warriors.” The world requires protectors. It requires ardent swords and dutiful shields. Navy looks down at his left hand with its dead nerves and wonders if the heroes of ages past thought as he does now. He wonders if their wisdom could have stopped his brother from burning himself into an early grave.[break][break]
“You hurt someone, you make them wanna hurt people. World needs warriors. Problem is…people get it in their heads that’s what they wanna be. There’s this girl I’m helping out. Genevieve Cromwell. Good person. Good heart. Talented. She’s not gonna realize until it’s too late what she’s giving up to be strong. She’ll be a hero…but I wish she got the chance to see what she’d be in a better world.” But that is not their world. He will serve, as will Genny and all the others history will remember for their heroism. He wonders how many will fall emulating his example, following in the footsteps of the warrior.
