[attr="class","spentywords"]There had been an issue with the chair lift at the base of Mt. Chimney, which was looming over them just over a mile to the West. Adrian raised a hand over his brow as a visor, scanning along the column of vulnerable pokemon filing their way towards their temporary home. The snow on the ground was heavy, crunching underneath his boots.[break][break]

Many of the pokemon trudged along clumsily, unaccustomed to the powdery precipitation. Most wore drab expressions, sulking or shivering in the warped clime. Adrian couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy for them, hoping they could help speed up efforts in the area by at least a smidgen.

Monty had already escorted a few pokemon from the surrounding colder woods to the warmer area near Lavaridge as requested by a few ranger friends. He hadn't started looking for new work just yet, but he was happy to know that he'd submitted an email to kim cole-essam that morning, and perhaps he'd get looked at. Being his secretary would be just as hard as it was being the secretary for about twenty-five rangers over the past year before he worked in the field.[break][break]

How was it he had to choose between life-or-death scenarios, like these missions, or being somebody's paper pusher and glorified filing system?[break][break]

Once he saw the back of Adrian, he furrowed his brows, as if to wonder if that's really who he thought it was. Once Adrian turned slightly and covered his eyes to look up, it was confirmed.[break][break]

"Adrian!"[break][break]

He was still a bit away, but he jogged forward to try and catch up. He'd just rested his pokemon, so they remained in their pokeballs for a bit more of a break.[break][break]

"I didn't know they'd recruited you to help with Mt. Chimney passage. It's a bit of a relief, honestly. At least I know you're a capable trainer, and not some twelve year old looking for quick money."[break][break]

[attr="class","spentywords"]He jumped when he heard his name called out, turning to see if the voice matched the man. Adrian could be sure it was Monty from the streak of mint, though it shouldn't have been so surprising for Monty to be out here, doing his job. Mauville wasn't that far away; the League probably routinely called him out here on business.[break][break]

He wore an exasperated look before Monty got very close, relaxing his features into a welcoming smile. "Sup?" Yeah, he was a little short on words, trying foremost to compose himself. There wasn't much else to share or say, and he'd been coping better just avoiding and forgetting Monty. By now his feelings had shifted from remorse to resent. That'd made it easier to put it all behind him.[break][break]

"Would it be bad if I was looking for quick money?"[break][break]

Barking a laugh his smile bloomed wider as he responded to Monty, enjoying their bit of back-and-forth despite himself. Part of what intrigued him the most, though, was how Monty complimented him as a trainer. Had Monty ever seen him do anything...? Sure, that Togekiss had gotten them through a tough break, but that wasn't even a result of his training.[break][break]

Was that compliment relative to twelve-year old kids?[break][break]

"Aw, I'm flattered," Adrian said in mock adoration, clutching his hands together and, well, it might be described as swooning. He let his hands fall but crossed them, huffing with continued laughter. But now his eyes turned to the pokemon, shifting to a stern yet wistful tone.[break][break]

"I wished for some snow, like we get back home. But look at them..." The exodus was pitiful, and not a single pokemon showed more signs of life than their incessant drudgery as they struggled on their path to Mt. Chimney. Needless to say, he was feeling a little guilty; not that he thought he caused this, but that he'd even wished it upon them inadvertently. That was his real reason for being here.[break][break]

"How do you want to handle this?" His eyes locked on Monty, hoping to collaborate on a course of action.

Every antic that Adrian made just made Monty smile, and sometimes make an expression like perhaps Adrian was being silly. Which, he was. Monty was thankful they could have conversations like these and it not be incredibly awkward. And perhaps it was only Monty's fault that it had been awkward in the first place.[break][break]

After a few moments of consideration, Monty pushes his hands into his pocket and takes a deep breath. [break][break]

"I've just been keeping them as warm as I can. I had my chandelure light a few fires along a path and persuaded the pokemon to follow that path to warmth. Most of them were thrilled to hear they could take refuge at a spring... dunno how happy these pokemon are going to be about being forced inside the cave."[break][break]

There was no telling, whether the same plan would work or whether they should even bother with the same plan. Either way, it was the only plan that Monty had, so that's what he was going to roll with... that is...[break][break]

"You have a plan?"[break][break]

[attr="class","spentywords"]"That was resourceful," he admitted when Monty explained their stratagem to ease the pokemons' burdens as they scaled the mountain. If they happened along the same path, even for a short while, it would work wonders for the pokemon and their spirits.[break][break]

"I want to try the lift."[break][break]

He could see it in the distance, its disrepair evident even from this perspective. A lone cable car sat unmoving halfway up to the summit, which had prompted a rescue attempt in itself some days prior. Repair teams hadn't been able to fix it yet, and wouldn't until the snow had subsided. And who knew how long that might take?[break][break]

Even for as ludicrous it sounded, Adrian was every bit as confident in this course of action, hefting a pokeball off his belt and tossing it skywards. Howitzer came fumbling out of it, crunching the snow beneath its feet. "Easy, girl," he warned before stroking a hand roughly through her dense fur. "Keep us warm, will ya?"[break][break]

His arcanine would trot alongside them as Adrian took a few steps forward, turning back to Monty with a concerned expression. "...Was the column attacked on the way to Lavaridge?" He knew there were sneasel and weavile, and all manner of pokemon whose predatory instincts would cloud their rational judgement. Or perhaps that was their only rational judgement, given the storm would soon make such easy prey scarcely seen for the rest of this winter.[break][break]
