sickness? in my house? [ ff ]

elijah knows who she is. a superior elevated to a height reserved only for the most fiendish or voracious in battle. the gardener averts his eyes from such pillars; instead, he prefers to till the soil around them and grow ever-reaching vines.

quietly, he walks over to her. a knowing glance is hopefully enough to finalize their common connection. rocket to rocket, elijah mutters, "can't take care of your own pokemon?"

he knows he's playing with poison. yet, the apothecary can't help but have fun with the shift in power.

"i have a place here." elijah says and gestures for her to follow. "no thanks to you, maybe your scolipede won't die."

he leads her to a nearby hotel— it's shoddy, but satisfactory. elijah opens the door to his first floor room. a sprawl of vines and plants overwhelming the furniture greet them as elijah spreads a cloth on a couch.

elijah's gogoat reels back, front legs cycling in the air before slamming on the ground with a stalwart steadiness. a defiant cry accompanies a vigorous stretch: BULK UP. the goat's body toughens up visibly, the fur almost lifting with its tensed muscle.

with a frown and upon mercy's utterance, elijah's eyes slide icily toward the wimpod. he doesn't mean to be aboding.

"he's cute." elijah whistles for his gogoat, but instead of stopping by its trainer, it picks up the wimpod by the mouth and hurls it onto its back. "work with him. give him the final blow."

the gogoat charges into the fray immediately, leaving the wimpod to hang on desperately. with a fierce bleat, it leaps, dodging a STONE EDGE that erupts from the earth like a geyser. quickly, a HORN LEECH saps the boldore of its STURDY constitution— but an IRON DEFENSE gleams upon its hardened body, the crystals shining bright.

the gogoat intends to dull the creature's lustre. a well-practiced LEAF BLADE cuts into the crystalline spine before it bucks the wimpod off its back.

it bleats, as if to say, "finish him."

"we've had our share of tussles." elijah says, his gravelly speech slipping out lazily. "isn't that right, aethia?"

an affirming bleat travels up the gogoat's throat before being carried by its charging body. as the toxic douses their foes, elijah's gogoat drives its horns into the two pokemon. each antler tosses the weakened dragons back. yet, the attack refuses to resolve.

his gogoat's movement slows upon impact. the limbs, as if they were caught in some invisible webbing, fall short of their limber normalcy.

elijah likes what he sees. he directs his partner to push forward on to the goomy "leaf blade him," he draws a pokéball from his loose clothes. "i'm nabbing this one. we've got plenty of leaves for it, after all."

a fierce strike catches the weak pile of sludge across its maw, and as it expels a gasp, a ball strikes it red.

it's not what he's looking for, but the pokémon is valuable nonetheless. the destructive nature of something so cute surprises him— surprises him as it smashes an old wall into splinters.

like a pinball, the azumarill rolls about, attempting to dissuade elijah from exploring further. but the apothecary has great patience. a mindfulness cultivated from a history in the garden.

his victreebel eventually ensares the reckless rabbit with its vines. they wrap around the creature's ovoid form and tighten like shackles before a sleep powder shakes out from the plant's gaping maw.

as the azumarill begins to snore, a pokeball arcs toward it like an uncounted sheep.

after some time, elijah had descended to a deeper level. he stalks the flooded corridors, the forgotten rooms. wearing thick fishing pants, he wades in and out in search for a wheel. it's cold where the water has touched him. the fabric drags and droops where his elbows have dipped into the icy ocean.

but it's worth it. he's in here for the long haul. a gem flickers in a nearby room. it catches his eye, tugs at a childhood excitement for pirate treasure. yet, the sheen shifts within the shadowy recesses of the facility as an alien cry accompanies the gem's movement. a starmie bursts out of the door, forcing elijah to duck.

it spins away and plunks itself into the deeper sea. he wonders if he's scared whatever he's hunting for.

but he takes his chances anyway.

"you and me both." elijah doesn't miss a beat; his face is serene, but only in the way that it maintains its strained bitter hue.

the rockets were a criminal organization. he didn't expect human decency to be a prerequisite. his ears perk up at the frantic noise of something scrambling away.

no matter. elijah pats the gogoat's back. "hey, she did nothing wrong." his lips thin. "i don't know if we'd want anything that cowardly anyway."

as if offended by the remark, the scurrying returns.

elijah relents. the threat of murder eventually rings hollow like a pepper's seeds scraped out with a dulled knife. there's no escape.

victor's finger disarms him and his practiced posture slumps. the dissection of the act peels apart the rubber of his balloon. a sigh, like trapped air squealing out of his popped body, responds to the threats.

"i don't drink." elijah says, not knowing the glass is for someone else. "look. if i give you a ride, you keep your mouth shut. got it?"

the rock in his shoe becomes too apparent, and as he witnesses the articuno alight upon the ball, elijah frowns.

"too much shit's going on. i'll drive you home. c'mon."

his eyes play tricks on him. within the recesses of fading memory, the ship's shadows fidget and writhe like human forms. but no one else is here. at least, he believes. he hopes.

as the incline steepens, the victreebel's vines tense and reel elijah in. cradled by the vine slinging flycatcher, elijah is carried to a hallway tilted on its side.

through a splintered wooden floor, he sees a fish flicker in the depths. yet, it's another trick. the huntail's end wafts in the waters like the seaweed he searches for.

it's oddly calming here. the seawater graces the ruins so gently, like a nokanshi preparing a body for departure. yet, the sunken facility is stubborn. as if rejecting its own abandonment, it stays like a scabbing scar on hoenn seas.

within the tilted structure, he searches for creeping seaweed. a finger of kelp. a sea plant suspended hauntingly in the air like a soul sorrowfully locked away.

his victreebel has its vines wrapped around his waist should he slip on the sloped gap-toothed deck.

"a bit of both." elijah says, averting his gaze from the grisly burial. "i'm nauseatingly loyal." the last line is almost sung, the syllables spun around like a paper pinwheel.

jacob's lament digs deep. the gardener can empathize, but he refrains from investing too much. he believes the rocket organization to be too frenetic, so filled with surprises that even a jack-in-the-box is predictable in comparison. who knows if jacob would last in this circus of back-stabbing.

"sorry about that. damn." elijah kicks a small pile of dirt onto a mound. "shit sucks. guess we're just in it until the end."

he eyes the pokemon fondly.

"doin' it to keep my practice alive." elijah sighs. "i practice herbal medicine... people don't buy into it as much cause the shit tastes rank. but it works. they appreciate it."

with a knotted brow, elijah continues. "in a way, you've received an education. your girl? your family? this world? it's shit. might as well be a part of its downfall."

he meets her in the green. bobbing gently on top of a gogoat's gentle gait, elijah waves almost absent-mindedly, his fingers curling naturally like withered autumn leaves. he's not sure if she expects him. all he knows is that he expects her.

as he nears, elijah preemptively slides off the goat's sturdy spine. he shoves his hands into their opposite sleeves and toasts them in their vacuums of warmth.

"i was sent by them." the apothecary's message comes before the gogoat groan: a soft herald. "some buddy-buddy system. i don't fucking know."

the weirdness was contagious. inescapable. he felt like a doomed patient zero. a gwyneth paltrow with a handful of bat and pig disease.

elijah lamented this lack of escape. although he dressed the part of a smooth operative, his maneuvers were anything but smooth. tugged away by the current of victor's rage, elijah surrendered to the inevitable. in this case, a slap.

a stinging palm print graced his cheek. one eye winced close, elijah rearranged his jaw before patting the raw red on his face.

"can't a man have fun?" elijah responded slowly. his eyes wandered to the unopened champagne bottles and their pebbled gold foil. "you're lucky i haven't punched you back. yet."

he glared at him.

"if you say anything more about the train station, i won't hesitate."

"from the battle. or after. or both." elijah says, noting the name. "i don't fuckin' know. it's disgusting and i want this shit out of here."

as jacob summons the sandile, elijah wrinkles his nose. he wonders for a macabre moment whether tea made from the earth of a burial ground would be nutritious or not. the thought stops. cut by the throat.

"glad to see your sandile's enjoying the tail."

elijah crosses his arms and avoids stepping on a limp limb. a hand lazily escapes the nook of his elbow, producing a pokeball. a tangrowth materializes like a blossoming bush. it starts to viciously pry into the earth with its arms— before one of its vine-limbs falls off.

the tangrowth shrugs, having added to the morbid scene and continues to dig as another vine replaces its lost limb.

"people are so fragile." elijah sighs. "what got you into rocket, jacob? aren't you afraid of ending up like these sorry bastards?"

"Oh yeah, the train..."

Shit. The guy just went there. Vague as it was, Elijah feels alarmed by the sudden resurgence of the Slateportian chaos. The redirection toward the warmer inside is followed. Trapped by a one-track ride of feigned romance, Elijah complies. He gestures for his Florges to follow— and the flower pokemon responds with a skeptical look.

"Thanks." Elijah says. He supposes he should respond back— and the words spill out plainly like Times New Roman on A4 paper. "You two are cute... too."

As the entrance beckons them, Elijah clears his throat. The insistence of a kiss tugs at his ears— and he refuses to be defeated by Victor's prodding.

"Well..." Elijah takes Camryn's hand, and attempts to plant a kiss delicately on it. He gestures to Alex and Victor, the nice cut of his suit sharpening as he pivots toward them. "My girl wants a more gentlemanly approach. Are you two going to kiss or what, now?"

The music from inside billows forth like the intervals of cold winds.
