"i have no idea who... that other guy is." elijah says, voice drooping low. "fuck— what's this guy up to now?"

florges spectates the ass-slap— and shrouds herself in the heads of roses. nothing alarming for now. just absurdity.

and the absurdity hurts. it's cold. the strike is like lava splashing against his ass— and elijah, not used to such a forward advance on his glutes, digs his heels in and rams the pebble hard into his foot's arch.

he almost yelps.

elijah grits his teeth. hard. such an expression morphs into an awkward smile as the other couple enters the floral stage. under the hushed beat of a grunt, elijah whispers to camryn through the jail of his teeth:

"what the fuck was that for?" his shoulders relax. the pebble digs deep. "hello... boys..."

the cold wind cuts across the garden like a tumbleweed.

"if my name was on it, it'd say elijah." he waves the slowpoke tail around like a floppy magic wand. "what's your name?"

upon the refusal of his edible endowment, he flicks it around some more like a toy.

"eh, don't want it to go to waste." elijah eyes the disembodied appendage and draws it close to his lips, but he leans back at the last moment. "nevermind. this thing has been places."

he tosses it back into the basket and sighs.

"actually, got a job. you might wanna help."

elijah grunts, uprooting himself as he stands wearily. the basket seems heavy as if holding breath. with a frown, he turns it over. from the basket, several human appendages scatter on to the hillside. turning his nose away from the macabre litter, elijah announces his duty.

"we need to bury these," elijah grumbles, "league officials. maybe they'll make good fertilizer for the grass."

"nice to meet y—"

the shrieks continue. fuck.

with every shriek and condemnation, elijah's suit shrinks tighter. it's like webbing being spun around him, and the voice from above shakes each confining thread with an icy resonance.

the pebble strikes the side of his head with a thud; he swears it draws blood— but it's simply a hemoglobic hallucination. from afar, his florges fidgets with concern.

"actually—" elijah returns to camryn. a swift reversal. the tails of his coat follow suit, whipping behind him. "i need you to trust me. the guy up there? has the biggest crush on me. i turned him down— now he thinks i eat babies."

he offers a look that seems to say, 'yeah, i know what you're thinking. crazy, right?' elijah leans forward, his convictions pulling him by the collar.

"trust me. pretend we're an item. we could've met in... kalos." elijah says. "he's just jealous i'm with someone, so he'll start to badmouth me, right?" he plucks a flower from the planter as if to kill the springtime of a faked romance. "don't believe a word he says."

"didn't think i'd be having a date today." elijah lazily said, hauling a small woven basket from the nook of his arm. "this is usually my spot."

he perseveres through the formality of his dress. bound tight to his form, elijah grimaces, missing the loose fabrics of his usual identity— but the cost of his freedom is fine for what he receives.

elijah sits beside the red head. plops himself unceremoniously like a fallen apple. he pulls a slowpoke tail from the basket, and he swears it squirms.

"i don't get why people eat this shit." elijah sighs. "you want it?"

"hm."

elijah fights the urge to lean lazily against the planter. pinching his toe against the pebble, he prompts himself of his thespian subterfuge.

"is this ball a little treat then, too?"

as she blushes, the groomed man celebrates a small victory. he's still got it; perhaps, he did have an allure about him. one that was caked in layers and layers of rich aerated soil and fertilizer.

"that's a shame..." elijah's words taper off like snakes, and as he struggles to harvest the ripe fruit of his next line, he's interrupted.

elijah's head swings toward the balcony.

"oh fuck." elijah pivots, snapping back to camryn like a repulsed boomerang. "i gotta get going... people are already getting wasted, and i'm not really about that life."

"Party. Sure." Elijah's cigarette fiddles like a conductor's wand in between his teeth.

Finally, he plucks the stick from his lips and grinds it against the concrete planter. Cinders scatter like charred spewpa scatterdust.

"Kalosian Dreams' sucks your wallet dry." He lifts himself up, shoulders rolling back. "I'm David. Nice... dress."

His hands reach for the phantoms of his extinguished cigarette, and after a moment's awkwardness, find themselves digging deep into his pockets. Elijah counters her bright eyes with his dull colour of expression; his florges surveys the interaction, bent back settling deeper into the tangle of roses.

"You're not here with a date?" Elijah's breath condenses, the air cooling by winter's frozen wings. "Or is there a boyfriend nearby... ready to punch me out?"

elijah's in the rose gardens. a small rock rolls around in his right dress shoe. like a mosquito, the pebble bites into his sole, traveling from fleshy curve to straight plane alongside the jilted rhythm of his gait.

but this nuisance is purposeful.

the apothecary walks funny. walks different with a spritely skip to his step. his broad back is flattened back and straight like a plank. elijah's hair slicked back like vines, and his throbbing scar is dabbed up with make-up.

funny how clandestinely one can change themselves. funny how even a suit is enough to change the man from a green thumb to a white collar.

elijah just wants to have a good time. and he does. in a distant bush, his florges rests among the flowers as wild cutieflies court around the petals. lighting a cigarette, he blows smoky dreams far and away from the shivering roses. as someone nears, he stills. his penetrating eye scrapes toward the intruder while his cigarette's tip quivers with fire.

his flowers weather the frost of her words. bending in the chill, they falter but a brisk shake and tighter grip remind the stalks of his determination. in the ensuing silence, the ocean waves whisper into the ear of the shore.

"yes." elijah finally says. what else did she want? he's bearing his heart; the colours of his hand-picked petals seemingly pulse.

elijah continues despite her beautiful beholder eye. he isn't sure if it's her indifferent beam that causes his heart to stop— or if it's the way her scathing expression endears himself to her.

"i grew these personally." he inches the bouquet further. "that's what i do. garden and... the like. if you would like, we can have a date picking weeds."

finally, a blush blossoms across his cheeks like a victreebel's unraveling vines.

slateport invasion. chaotic city. people screaming and fires being set. yada yada yada. elijah's over it by now. the beach is still pretty— if you ignored the craters of sand, disembodied zombie krabby limbs, and sinking monuments in the polluted sea. he can hear the occasional scream ring out like radio from slateport's burning corpse.

he had invited her here because the beach is pretty. elijah's sandaled feet sink into the sand as he awaits her arrival, hands behind his back hiding his feelings. maybe she won't be able to see his nerves slowly tickle his skin chicken. she wears an eyepatch after all.

clearing his throat, elijah watches as she arrives. he strikes, brandishing his gift like a samurai sword— or floppy pool noodle.

"hi yvonne." a bouquet of flowers bloom from his clasped hands and present themselves to her. "take these." he stops. "because i like you."

he stares. stiffly.

"i was joking. it's poisonous."

no sound leaves his lips afterward. instead, his limbs rifle through his clothes— in search for an antidote.
