Waves lap along the shore and over pastel pink toenails. Luka digs them into the sand as she stares across the water, eyes lingering on the whirlpools but never truly focusing.[break][break]

She's off to the side of the group she'd arrived with: jayden cross, mint frost, annalise henderson, MATIAS SILPH, and illeana reyes. Eva Morales joining them is expected as well, and more than welcome. But although she appreciates the friends and acquaintances who had let her tag along with them, she doesn't feel quite as chatty as usual. Nor does she offer much help as the group speculates about riddles and theories— it's not like she'd be able to figure it out anyways.[break][break]

Conversation buzzes around her. Something about nosepass, the whirlpools, true north. She doesn't pay it as much mind as she should, listening instead to the sound of rising ocean swells. And when a too-familiar voice carries upon it, she catches it immediately.[break][break]

"I care about you...deeply"[break]

"I'll be yours...just as you'll be mine"

[break]

"I'm starting to think I like everything about you, dove"

[break][break]

It takes her a moment to realize the words are coming from the water, and not her own imagination. There's a place in her where fingerprints still rest, kisses still linger, and whispers softly echo. To hear his voice outside her memories is surreal and like a siren song, it calls her down.[break][break]

She looks up. In a stroke of bad timing, summer green eyes catch a flash of dark hair and a familiar closed-lipped smile. Luka wrenches her gaze away just as quickly, but five fingers have already wrapped around her heart, and squeeze tightly.[break][break]

To her credit, she doesn't cry. Her grief is discreet but persistent, and silent as bleeding from an unstitched wound. She swallows and turns away just as another voice reaches her.[break][break]

"Hm? Oh..."[break][break]

Her eyes sting as she blinks up at jayden cross, almost surprised at the address. A smile quickly slips into place upon round features; to not wear one would look unnatural.[break][break]

"Thank you," she chirps, hopping onto the Samurott behind him. "We're, um...going in?" She almost sounds eager. "If you need someone to go in first, I don't mind—"[break][break]

A familiar voice sets the hairs on the back of her neck on end. Luka freezes mid-sentence, arms lacing around Jayden's waist as tight as corset strings. She dares not turn, nor make a sound.[break][break] Lulu Flint, if that is her, is a dangerous woman. The lunar wing around her neck feels cold against her skin. But she doesn't have the opportunity to warn Jayden about it as his Samurott leaves the shore and the beach recedes, drawing their small party ever closer to an uncertain fate.[break][break]

As soon as they step foot on the island, Luka falls in love.[break][break]

It's so pink![break][break]

The flowers, the trees, even the sky! Roseate hues match the apples of her cheeks and the curled tresses that fan out behind her while they walk. It feels like a scene out of a fairytale, picturesque and perfect. She even has a prince by her side...[break][break]

The fact that they can't use their phones is troubling, but she shrugs it off as quickly as Remiel Calcifet. After all, they're out in the middle of nowhere, so it's to be expected. This is a good chance to unplug and unwind, though she's disappointed that there won't be any photos to commemorate their trip.[break][break]

But their guide, however cute, isn't quite as sunny and cheerful as the rest of the island seems to be. Luka forgives this easily enough— it must not be easy to arrange something like this on an otherwise uninhabited island. Remiel's comment, however, earns him a bit of side-eye.[break][break]

"Of me? Really?" Lips purse as she considers this, watching the ranger's back, her hurried- almost impatient- stride. "It's the hair, isn't it," she decides with a pout. "Not everyone with pink hair is related, you know!"[break][break]

She bumps his shoulder, but that's the extent of her good-natured teasing. Luka's hand finds his, and they fit as though made for each other. And together, they wander towards a campsite that holds the promise of a merry fire, delightful company, and a wonderful evening.[break][break]

Their tent is chosen, bags safely stowed away. And after throwing on a hoodie when the sun begins to set, Luka joins Remiel around the campfire. Like a parasite, she's unable to stay away from him for too long. Her saccharine affection is about to become everyone else's problem.[break][break]

"Wow...that looks so good!" Luka curls against Remiel's side, peeking over his shoulder while he sketches. "So pretty! You're so talented..."[break][break]

She offers BARNABY FINCH a smile and a little wave when he joins them. Her head rests against Remiel's shoulder while they talk, though she can't help but chime in eventually.[break][break]

Monsieur Finch has a good point," she chirps. "It could be dangerous! And anyways, we probably shouldn't go around eating strange berries...even if they do look really good." She wonders, vaguely, if they taste anything like pecha. That would be nice...

Maybe. Though faced with only a Wailmer, not a gigantic Wailord, Luka and her team of toddling tots are still hard pressed to push the poor whale back into the sea. Togepi, Cleffa, Igglybuff...the four of them don't make any headway as Luka's hands sink into squishy pink blubber.[break][break]

"I'll call them squishy, and they will be mine..."[break][break]

But nah, she's gotta release them into the sea! It's Plum who saves the day, using her telekinesis to levitate the Wailmer and float them gently into the water. The squishy is gone, but she waves cheerfully at them as they splash around happily and dip back into the water.[break][break]

He's so good, and the fact that he can't see it would break her heart if she knew. Even though she doesn't know Remiel well, she finds herself fascinated by the kindness that lingers behind a stoic facade, entranced by the juxtaposition between his public persona and the tenderness with which he treats her. She finds him charming, handsome, and endlessly fascinating.[break][break]

Perhaps Luka is simply drawn to broken things, just like her. She loves the art of kintsugi, putting people back together with a golden kindness. [break][break]

Or perhaps she's too enamored by the idea of a fairytale prince to notice any of his flaws at all.[break][break]

It doesn't occur to her, not even once, that he could ruin her. And even if she knew, it may not be enough to deter her foolish heart.[break][break]

Tis better to have loved and lost than never loved at all. Luka tries not to carry any expectations about their future, so instead she'll just treasure every moment while she can. She carves the lines of his face into her memory, memorizes the tone and timbre of his voice; still slightly breathless and husky with exertion. The feeling of his skin against hers is seared into her heart as they bask in their afterglow.[break][break]

"Eh? Of course you can," she answers, craning her neck to blink sleepily up at him. Affection drips honey-rich from the corners of an upturned mouth.[break][break]

The Prismatic Laser is devastating even at a distance.[break][break]

Luka throws her feeble body over Mousse, but of course she's too late. The Wigglytuff's lifeless form lies limp in her arms as the pair is blasted backwards, skidding over ruin and rubble. Her clothes catch on sprouted thorns, paper skin battered and bleeding— but she's still alive.[break][break]

She shouldn't be. She doesn't deserve to be. If she could take the place of Mousee or Fueille, she would in an instant. Thoughts that haven't surfaced in months overtake her once again and she doesn't have the strength to bury them.[break][break]

And now, as the darkness creeps in, she is well and truly alone. Her Pokemon lost, abandoned by her lover, Luka curls into a ball and sobs an infant's endless wail.[break][break]

She rises only when the darkness is pierced by an archaic light, runes illuminating the pitch blackness all around her. Untouched by charms or prophecy, she only registers the lake trio as an abnormality, their meaning lost on her. And yet she still finds them strangely compelling, tiny bubbles of hope amidst the darkness.[break][break]

There is hope, therefore I live.[break][break]

Luka staggers to her feet, rivulets of blood draining from open wounds as she stumbles towards the closest of the lights. There are figures there, though she cannot make out any faces. Georgette Bluebottle, Beau Fontaine, and a few fellow injured...she doesn't bother with greetings or niceties. At a time like this, it can certainly be forgiven.[break][break]

She hovers there, still silently grieving, until voices raise in a compelling call.[break][break]

TAKE YOUR POKEMON...AND MAKE THE CORRECT CHOICE

She can't.[break][break]

She can't have any more stains on her conscience or blood on her hands. She can't willingly lead her Pokemon to an uncertain fate, where they may suffer and die. Each partner is dear to her; not a mere tool that can be used and discarded on a whim.[break][break]

And yet, on her own, she's nothing. No power, no strength; not even the intelligence to think herself out of this situation. It's with a deep feeling of resignation that Luka realizes her only way to help is with another potential sacrifice. She chews her lips so hard it draws blood, but eventually summons her Florges from a love ball.[break][break]

"I need your help. But...it's dangerous," she tells Tuile with a sniff. "If you go...y-you might not come back. I won't send you out there if you don't want to go."[break][break]

Soft petals ripple with understanding. Tuile seems to understand the situation, feels the call to action more deeply in her soul than even Luka does. An unknowable energy draws her to Xerneas, and with a chiming cry (and pat on the head), she leaves Luka's side to join the legendary.[break][break]

As she floats towards the deer, small flowers bloom amongst the desolation. A grassy terrain extends around those who have joined Xerneas, the soothing vegetation healing smaller wounds and invigorating the healthy. Florges clasps her hands together and makes a Wish as well, a future blessing should things take a terrible turn.[break][break]

Helios leans back just as the pup's head comes hurtling towards him. The move is one that reeks of desperation, but it's a solid strategy nonetheless. The Blaziken hadn't seen that coming.[break][break]

The strike lands; a powerful blow from a small opponent. Shaken, but not downed, Helios corrects his stance to keep himself from stumbling back, unwilling to allow yet another opening.[break][break]

Now, he's starting to get annoyed. The battle should have been decided by now. Any admiration for tenacity is replaced instead by the desire to get this over with.[break][break]

Another series of kicks is sent the Riolu's way, faster now, almost impatient. Double, triple- the number doesn't really matter. All that matters is that they land. The pup seems to be on his last legs; Helios can outlast him, surely. All he needs to do is continue to wear him down and deliver the finisher.

Do you like me? It sounds so childish that she can't bear to say it out loud. But as Luka sinks under the spell of Remiel's kiss, her mind races. Perhaps to him this is just a casual fling, but every time she thinks about him her heart aches in a way she's intimately familiar with.[break][break]

Cheeks flush and lashes flutter to her cheeks, questions lost between reverant lips. In this moment, it doesn't mater if he doesn't feel the same way- with her eyes shut, she can pretend that their hearts are beating in tune.[break][break]

When they part she blinks up at him like a princess just roused from a daydream. Hazy green eyes, petal lips parted in a delicate smile. She shifts underneath him and nods, slowly.[break][break]

"Okay...lead the way, my prince."[break][break]

[break][break]

Snow still falls gently outside as they lay together, bodies entwined and breathing labored. The carols they'd sung ease into a blissful silence, though Luka's heart still thrums so loudly she's sure Remiel can hear it.[break][break]

Illuminated only by the fairy lights that decorate another christmas tree, Luka snuggles into her lovers side and rests her head on his chest.[break][break]

"Mmn...Merry Christmas, Remy."
