It was bright, it was early, CJ was far too caffeinated, and their stomach was empty. They’d taken an on call request for a bad fight between Houndour that resulted in both dogs needed their faces patched up. They passed by the maze on their habitual route and backtracked as sort of an afterthought. It was free to enter, and hey, you might win a prize. Maybe they could buy some lunch and settle the jittering in their bones.

SOONER OR LATER, I'M GONNA WAKE UP

A salt wind blew down the open beach, whipping the waves to white-crowns like a fresh merengue. CJ stretched their arms long overhead, feeling the sun warm on their skin. They rested on a beach-towel, toes firmly dug in the sand, while their Pokemon frolicked nearby. Biell and his apparently adopted Pichu daughter made sandcastles, while newly acquired Golduck Nico played Marco, Polo in the sea with Iman.

It was a beautiful day to be out on the beach. Sunbathers, like CJ, dotted the sand here and there, while their children, too, ran and played in the waves.

Finding their footing in the shifting sands, CJ can’t help but beam at Hide Moriya's compliment. “Thanks,” they said, running a hand through their hair and dislodging a metric ton of sand. “It gets tricky having Electric-types out here, but, we make do, right guys?” They smiled down at their Pokemon, who both cheered in agreement. [break][break]

“CJ,” they said in return to Hide’s introduction; they were about to talk more about yeah, Electric-types, when an angry Sandslash launched out of the ground, an arrow aimed straight at them. CJ yelped and dodged to the side, sliding on their forearms in the sand; Kinnick and Agate went the other way. [break][break]

The Jolteon was fast to round back on the Sandslash, though the Mouse Pokemon-- what a name-- was faster. It gained on CJ’s Pokemon and slashed at them with crush claw, tearing a sharp line through the fur on Kinnick’s chest. One of its fierce talons sheared high, over her ears; Agate was quick to respond, leaping off of Kinnick and attacking the Sandslash with a slash of her own. She caught the Sandslash across the face, narrowly missing one of its eyes. [break][break]

With the Sandslash distracted, Kinnick had the opportunity to spin on her front feet, and deliver two fierce kicks to the creature’s belly. It wheezed as the breath flew from it, doubling over in pain. Agate jumped off its face and back onto Kinnick. [break][break]

CJ stood, spitting sand, and threw a Pokeball, sealing the troublesome Sandslash inside. They had little time to comment on Hide’s own capture of the Solrock-- quickly, they made it to Kinnick to examine her wound. [break][break]

It was a very superficial cut, thankfully, much of it dulled by her sharp fur. Still, there was blood on her white neck ruff.

“Not much for it,” CJ mused, brushing some sand out of Kinnick’s fur, “it’ll sting for a while. Sorry, kiddo.”

Adriana Delmar came up the beach with her Pokemon at her side. She always went everywhere on her Swampert, putzing around like a slimy, blue Vespa. She gave CJ a warm, if slightly exasperated smile, like she was already tired and they hadn’t even started. Yeah, CJ had that effect on people, sometimes. [break][break]

“So there’s four nests here, and then four or five down the beach,” CJ explained, standing next to her and looking across the stretch of sand. The perimeter of the nests had been marked at four corners with red flags on thin wires. [break][break]

As Adriana and her Vaporeon deal with the Gumshoos, the sand over the nests closest to them begins to bubble and shift. Little flutes of sand go flying into the air as the baby Tirtouga push their heads to the surface and churn the grit with their flippers. An observant Wingull descends to the beach for a closer look-- but not before Kinnick drops a fierce bolt of thunder on it, knocking it out cold. The seagull’s fainted body drops to the sand, white feathers turned black and smoldering.

CJ shoots Adriana a sheepish look. “Oops,” they say, rubbing a hand through their hair. “Uh, maybe easy on the zappy-zaps, bud,” CJ says to their Jolteon. “We wouldn’t want any… collateral damage.”

Kinnick gives a dissatisfied hiss, but Agate jumps off her back and skitters closer to one nest. [break][break]

Two baby Tirtouga have emerged and begin their flight towards the water, flailing fins pulling themselves forward in the sand. [break][break]
