When he jumps, Fern relents and flaps a hand dismissively. “Oh, don’t worry about Tapu Koko. It won’t shock you–” their smile suddenly turns sly and playful, “so long as you don’t offend them.”[break][break]
They suppose the same can be said about themself as well. Cut from the same cloth.[break][break]
But they are not offended, so much as they are bored.[break][break]
Fern sighs loudly, shoulders drooping as their head lolls to the side. “That answer is no fun,” they complain, “what I think best? Surely you have interests?”[break][break]
Blue eyes flit up to DANE FAIRCHILD, “Areas you enjoy working in more than others?”[break][break]
Another sigh follows Dane’s response, though a brow arches as a smile cracks at the corner of their mouth, suddenly as mischievous as their patron.[break][break]

They shake their head tiredly, “I haven’t. It’s agitated each time we go, though I’m not sure why.”[break][break]
It’s not desirable to not have any concrete answers for him. They suppose it makes them look inadequate, when really, they’ve only turned over fruitless results.[break][break]
“That’s my suspicion,” Fern offers, “that, or it was transplanted from somewhere else. But it’s definitely not of this world.”[break][break]
That, they at least feel with certainty.[break][break]
“Perhaps you would like to join me on one of my upcoming visits to the city?” They manage a light laugh, self-deprecating in nature. “It could be that you find something that’s been under my nose the whole time.”[break][break]
They certainly hope not.

“Hm. Well, that’s unfortunate.” They respond simply, without an ounce of fear or apprehension. They have wiggled their way out of countless tight corners. They will continue to do so, should they need to.[break][break]

Hubris. Hopefully it is not their downfall.[break][break]

“Oh?” They keep their voice light, though they can’t disguise the way it piques with interest at the last moment. “When did this happen?” Likely long before they ever had the standing they do now.[break][break]

Fern huffs, irritation evident. “Not much, unfortunately. We’ve made a handful of trips back to Lesser Megalopolis, to little success.” They pause, head tilting in consideration. “It is fascinated with the Tapus of our world, though, and I know a similar Tapu Bulu has been sighted in different rifts. So it makes one wonder if this one here is looking for its siblings.”[break][break]

Or perhaps it is alone, and envious of what remains mostly intact here.

Fern almost tells the grunt not to worry about the overdressed pigeon that hovers beside them. But they remember that just because the shine of newness has worn off for them, this is not the case for others who aren’t in regular contact with it.[break][break]

And it enjoys his awe, after all. Tapu Koko gives one of its pincers a little warning snip! pointed at Dane. But Fern knows that it is only being mischievous.[break][break]

They sigh, “No specialties, then?” They wonder if he would have a preference of what he did on a regular basis. They’ll file whatever answer he gives away– nice and neat in their back pocket should it be useful later.[break][break]

“Well I think you’ll find it to be a definite change of pace here,” they remark with a laugh. Tasks and strange turns of events were certainly not in short supply.[break][break]

In any corner of Hoenn, really. One need only walk out the front door to find chaos on their stoop.[break][break]

They stop in their tracks abruptly, and make a swift spin toward their friend. Fern leans toward Mint just so with squinting eyes. “You are skittish. Not because of Area Zero. Why?” A part of them wants to scoff in dramatic offense. Does Mint really think they would be so easily fooled. They helped build him, they remember the scared boy who had turned up at the teashop that day, inquiring about building a new persona. Confident. Outgoing.[break][break]

If Mint is truly burdened by something, Fern likes to think that they can discern as much.[break][break]

Fern clicks their tongue lightly, expression edging toward exasperated affection. It is short-lived, though, as talk turns to Father Winter 2. Dionysus. There is no love lost between Fern and the scheming little snake. Or perhaps he is a hydra. The first head of Father Winter had been cut off, only for a second to sprout in its place. Intolerable. They sigh, shoulders drooping. “I’ve come to think that if I hadn’t woken up at the same time, I wouldn’t have been, but yes. I tried to catch jayden cross, and we both just…fell right in. It was odd. At first we thought it was just a portal, because we ended up on the other side of Sootopolis in our nightclothes…”[break][break]

It would have been funny to reflect upon now, if it weren’t for all of the trouble that had come afterward. That had soured the whole thing in Fern’s mouth entirely. “But it turned out that we weren’t in our Sootopolis at all. A tiny shift. But it changed everything.” Their gaze hardens as they say it, the bitter edge unable to soften on their tongue.[break][break]

Better to focus on what is troubling Mint so badly about this, they wager. “The entire night?” A brow rose as they let the news sink in, “someone got their fill, then?” There was something sly to their words, even if they held disdain for the DRK Triad member. The teasing falls away quickly, though. “What happened? Are you alright?” Well, he clearly isn’t, but they’re not sure what sort of lasting impact this has left. If Mint is simply shaken, or if it goes beyond that.

Fern speaks simply, without much thought to it. But talk of agenda and inner workings is washed away by the way Jayden turns toward them with immediate contrition.[break][break]

Despite the lingering aftershocks of what tore at them in the dream, despite the recent clinging and lack of space, he is still their Michail. And no matter their frustrations and irritations and uncertainty, they still care

They still love him.[break][break]

They roll back toward him as he pulls them gently. A sigh drifts from their mouth. “Stop,” they relent, hand sneaking up to curve along his cheek. “Stop looking at me with those sad, hangdog eyes.”[break][break]

Fern’s thumb carves a sweeping path under the hollow of his eye. Even as exasperation threatens to creep back in. “Mischa. How can I not worry, when you willingly sign yourself up for torture?”[break][break]

Their tongue clucks against the back of their teeth, disapproving. But it is soft. So soft they feel they might crumble from it. At least until their uncertainties re-root themselves again.

“Oh, yes. I’m fine.” Fern watches him with a degree of curious scrutiny because it doesn’t feel like he’s talking about the root. Not actually. When he yelps and startles over a little web, Fern shakes their head. “Maybe I should be asking you the same question.”[break][break]

At the cry, they look back to Tapu Koko, who had been following behind. The deity meets their gaze and then shoots higher into the air to see if it can spot the source.[break][break]

Fern frowns, eyes cutting over to Mint at the mention of Father Winter. Their lips press in a thin line, a contemplative hum vibrating in the back of their throat. “Did you?” Concern flits into their expression as they note his lulls and stammers in a new light. The anxious flutter that is now more obvious coming from their friend.[break][break]

“Not exactly,” they offer, shaking their head, “or rather, I didn’t get a personal visit, no. But I did get sucked into Jayden’s visit.” Something in their eyes hardens as they say it.[break][break]

Their recollection of that time spent trying to peel jayden cross away from a false Dmitri’s machinations had been fraught, and the strain it caused still has hooks in them. They don’t add the fact that the Mint in that world had been supportive of trusting Dmitri.[break][break]

That they’d ended up working against one another, in a way, inadvertently.[break][break]

But Fern’s fight had been with his partner, not his friend. The friction had never been from a fight with Mint. “Why do you ask?”

At her insistence, he let out a petulant whine. A meager attempt to make himself more pitiful and helpless. "Mercy, pleassseee. I beg." He knew it was likely a futile effort. She was gonna manhandle him until he was no more than a litten caught by its scruff.[break][break]
But it wasn't his fault! Really! It had all happened so fast. And honestly, Fern didn't quite know how to feel about it himself. He felt a little bit, suddenly, like he wasn't just his own any more.[break][break]
And he had always been unapologetically his own.[break][break]
If he kept it up, Marzy really might have beaten him to a pulp. But she didn't. Such was the nature of their relationship, no matter how many threats she made.[break][break]
"Mhm, pigeon. Meet Tapu Koko." The deity floated up from behind the couch, blinking wary eyes at her. "I'm not annoying!" he cried, before adding a tiny little "...yes." in afterthought. He eyed Marza's whisky bottle with greedy fervor and then his eyes rose desperately to hers. "Can I have some of that?"

Anxiety over this change still hums under their skin. They still don't know if the choice made was the right one. Or even if they are wholly comfortable with the new bond and the parts of themself that it gives over to Tapu Koko.[break][break]
But as of right now, they know it can't be so easily undone.[break][break]
They are unsure of what Jayden is thinking in the moment - if he accepts them. And then hands slide against their skin, and relief sings in their chest. Fern folds into the contact, into the gentle kiss. Eyes close peacefully as they let out a held breath. "I'm glad."[break][break]
At the very least, it is a comfort that the nature of their connection to Tapu Koko comes somewhat naturally. They play off one another, and soon it grows bored with the two humans and drifts away.[break][break]
Fern smiles as they turn back to Jayden, though it falters as something strange flickers though his expression at their touch. "You okay..?"[break][break]
Their nose wrinkles, however, and they lean into him as they shake their head. "Never, duck. I wouldn't dream of it."

They eye him as he begins to protest, something fierce and almost mutinous in the bright blue shade. It only lasts for a moment, as they willfully smooth it over. He will say what he will say. They are not in the mood to let this tilt into an actual argument.[break][break]
There is something fearful in the prospect. Reminiscent of the dreamscape where they just could not budge him.[break][break]
But Jayden relents, and Fern lets out a quiet breath. Some of the tension in their shoulders slides off. At the mention of the underboss, Fern shrugs - recalling some of their own interactions with her. Traded calculations. "It likely does not fit with whatever agenda she has in mind." They sound unbothered as they say so - Fern has always admired Elisabeth Fiorelli's tactical prowess, even if their trust isn't inherently give.[break][break]
At the addition, their face twists in immediate disapproval. "That doesn't matter! Just because you can endure it, doesn't mean that you should."[break][break]
They let out another long breath as they look ahead. This man, honestly...

The snuffling sound of something in the brush pulls at Fern and they turn, face lighting up in delight. “Ah! Applin! There!” They point excitedly at the tart green little fellows and Danu springs at it with a burst of SWIFT stars… and one successfully sent it tumbling into the waiting clutches of their safari ball as Fern clapped his hands in approval and award the sylveon with more scritches.

Something in their posture stiffens up when he asks the gentle question because they are unable to skirt away from it or easily change the subject. And they would like to, they would very much like to.[break][break]

Talking about their da brings a flutter of fear to their heart. That right now while they are here, he is not okay in Stow-on-Side. Even if they know this is not the case, they fear it. They fear harm coming his way. Even more so, they fear his disappointment.[break][break]
