Gunner shook his head. "Nothing specific. Request what you like."[break][break]

He idled by the door of the bedroom while Summer made the call to her personal chef. Though it was still very weird to think of other people in such terms, Gunner was beginning to get used to it, at least in the context of Summer's life.[break][break]

"It sounds like I need to meet this Jacques and thank him for always supporting you," Gunner said with a smile, meaning it. "But yeah, let's go."[break][break]

They headed downstairs to exit the house on its beach-facing side. On the way, they collected a large picnic blanket, some cushions for sitting, and a portable Bluetooth speaker for music. Gunner carried it all in a large basket.[break][break]

"Is there anything else you'd like to bring?" he asked Summer.

Gunner toasted Melody with his own cup of tea, then sipped it as he listened. The plans of the AQUA Initiative were news to him, but he schooled his expression into a serious, professional one. He would have learned of the plan to attack Sootopolis eventually, either way.[break][break]

"I see. An attack on the submarine would cause collateral damage to the harbor area most of all, and less to the other districts," he mused aloud. "Depending on the time of day of the attack, there may not be many civilians there — only those who live in the district."[break][break]

He had to agree: the point raised by Katherine Fairburne was a fair one. If Melody wished to pull off this strategy, she'd have to disguise the concert among several in other locations, at the very least.[break][break]

Gunner guessed that was going to be her proposal, but just in case he was wrong, he asked, "What's your idea?"

The enormous Pokémon emerged from beneath the sands to loom over the two men. Gunner also took an instinctive step back and swallowed hard, his heartbeat racing as adrenaline flooded his veins.[break][break]

"'Tame' may have been too strong of a word," he admitted as the unknown Pokémon considered them. "I've never seen anything like it before."[break][break]

And then it lunged, jaws wide, hands outstretched.[break][break]

"RUN!"[break][break]

Gunner turned and sprinted back toward the rift, his Claydol zooming after him. Waves of sand sprayed into the air as the Pokémon's face smashed into the sand and disappeared into it, though the tremors suggested that had not stopped it at all.[break][break]

"Claydol! TELEPORT us back to the rift!"[break][break]

The Clay Doll Pokémon gave a low hum as its eyes glowed with bright, pale purple light. In an instant, Gunner, Greyson, Krookodile, and Claydol vanished as the strange creature's maw exploded upwards, only to snap closed on thin air.

The safety of Hoenn and its people are more important than any personal endeavors.

"What would your ideal date be? And who with?"
I think my ideal date would be a camping trip in the foothills near where I grew up. I'd love to take Summer Atreides but I know she hates the outdoors, so that won't happen. But it's a nice thought!

"Do you believe in astrology? What's your star sign?"
I don't believe in it, but I know my sign. I'm a Virgo.

"What was your favourite stuffed animal or toy as a kid?"
I had a little Cyndaquil plush toy that my parents gave me when I was a baby. That's why a Cyndaquil was my first Pokémon.

"Who would you want to raise your child if you die unexpectedly? Why?"
My parents or brother GIDEON GRAVES, because they're family. I don't have any children, though.

"If you didn't live in Hoenn, which other region would you rather live in? Why?"
Probably Kalos. I enjoyed my time there when I visited.

"Everybody has at least one unpopular opinion. What’s yours?"
We shouldn't be afraid to dirty our hands to do what's right.

"If you could have any Pokemon ability, what would it be and why?"
There are so many Pokémon abilites. I really don't think I could choose.

"Despite everything that's happened and will happen, why are you still in Hoenn?"
Because it's my home. My family lives here, and I have to protect them. No one else will.

"If you can be an avatar, which legendary Pokemon would you prefer to be your patron?"
I heard about some Legendary Pokémon of Galar that the locals view as folk heroes. I've yet to read more into the lore, though.

"Do you have a role model? If so, who is it and why?"
I really admire PENELOPE LIVY. She keeps a level head and is excellent at her job. Of course, I also admire GIDEON GRAVES. He's always striven toward great heights and inpsired me to the do the same.

"What turns you on? What gets you excited?"
I like when they try to fight.

"Pick a genre: lost world or science fiction."
Don't you know that lost world is a sub-genre of science fiction? So you're basically asking me to choose between science fiction and science fiction.

"Are you enjoying the video game, Rondez-view of Luv? Give us a rating."
I have some qualms with the game, but it's very well made. 4/5.

Gunner laughed lightly at Summer's promise to loosen him up. He had no doubt she'd be able to do just that.[break][break]

"Got it. Emergencies only," he repeated. However, the knowledge that her laptop was present in the house sent the gears of his mind turning. Could he dig through it while she was asleep? Maybe while she was having a long and luxurious bath?[break][break]

He'd need to formulate a plan once he understood the routine of their days. In the meantime…[break][break]

"And lunch sounds fantastic." Gunner released Summer and turned to gather whatever things he needed. Sunglasses, phone… He guessed he could leave behind his wallet, though. As for the actual food and drink, he assumed Summer's staff would take care of them.

Gunner blushed at her gentle admonishment, a sheepish smile curling his lips. "Sorry. Everyone says I'm too serious. I guess formal is my default."[break][break]

He joined Summer at the window, wrapping his arms around her from behind and placing a gentle kiss on her shoulder. "I'll try harder to loosen up, I promise," he offered, hoping that would appease her.[break][break]

A pang of pity filled Gunner at the thought of Summer being all alone in this enormous house. He truly was grateful she'd decided to bring him, so he'd resolved right away that he would do everything in his power to make the week pleasurable — in more ways than one.[break][break]

"You're right, we really do. You've been working nonstop lately, and with all the trials right now, it's a wonder I have enough time to eat and shower before crashing in bed every night."[break][break]

Another soft kiss, this time on the side of her head.[break][break]

"So, what do you want to do first?" he murmured into her hair.

Spring break was not a luxury Gunner had the privilege to enjoy. Unlike his brother GIDEON GRAVES, who worked at a university, Gunner hadn't had a spring break in almost a decade — not since he was studying for his law degree. Instead, work dominated his life, especially with the recent plans revealed to him by Melody Miro.[break][break]

So when Summer Atreides informed him — informed, not invited — that he'd be accompanying her on her own spring break, he was understandably confused. Pleasantly surprised, but confused nonetheless. The fact that she was also covering his expenses and PTO seemed outright ridiculous.[break][break]

But his protests to pay for himself had fallen on deaf ears. Summer really seemed used to getting what she wanted, and who was he to deny her when she was being so generous?[break][break]

That was how he found himself in her — their — beach house bedroom, overlooking the ocean after bringing their luggage upstairs. "It is," he agreed, a soft smile on his lips. "I don't often get the chance to get away to the beach. Thank you again for having me."

Gunner chuckled. "Good idea. You've probably had your fill of the outdoors at this point, hmm?"[break][break]

He released Summer with some reluctance but continued to hold her hand.[break][break]

"We could get something to eat in Petalburg. A hike always gets my appetite going. My treat," he offered, switching out his Pokéballs to release his Alakazam. He assumed Summer would prefer to TELEPORT back to civilization instead of trek back through the forest.[break][break]

Somehow, the prospect of a meal together felt different this time, like it carried a deeper meaning for them. Something precious and fragile. Something he wished he could keep alive for as long as he could.

It all happened so fast. Gunner moved his thumb to take the photo, then Summer's hand on his cheek coaxed his face toward hers. Her velvet-soft lips pressed against his in a sweet kiss. His eyes fluttered closed as the click of the camera cut through the serene stillness of the forest.[break][break]

The kiss ended too soon. Gunner lowered his hand, letting it hang loose at his side. He looked deeply into Summer's beautiful eyes for a moment, feeling himself getting lost in them.[break][break]

I'll regret this later, he thought, realizing he didn't give a damn.[break][break]

He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her again, this time with more passion — but not the lustful kind that usually marked their meetings. It was, for the first time, full of tender romance, an offering of his heart that he'd refused to make for the last five years.

To make matters worse, Summer gazed up at him with genuine relief before resting her head on his shoulder. Gunner's heart beat even faster as a blush colored his cheeks and ears a rosy hue. He wouldn't quite call it love, but the urge to wrap his arm around her shoulder was so difficult to ignore.[break][break]

Instead, he gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "Anytime, Summer. I'm happy to help you."[break][break]

Then he took his phone out of his pocket and raised it up. "Hey, we never got that photo. How about a selfie?"[break][break]

With some quick swipes of his thumb, he opened the camera app and reversed the lens so they could see themselves on the screen.

Gunner's world slowed. In any other situation, Summer's confession would have warmed his heart, especially considering the way she portrayed herself in front of others. Unattainable. Aloof.[break][break]

But in this case, she seemed to see right through his deception.[break][break]

No, Gunner told himself. It will only be a deception if she ends up having ties to Team Rocket after all.[break][break]

The next words out of her mouth, however, did make his heart rate spike. His brow furrowed even as she took his hand in hers, oh so gently. Hopefully, it would come off as concern for her — not for himself.[break][break]

"Even if there's no solid proof, you'll want to hire a lawyer to ensure you and your property are protected," Gunner suggested. "I'm sure you have one already, though. Maybe do a review of your employees, too, especially recent hires. See if there's anyone suspicious."[break][break]

Unbidden, guilt stirred within him. The emotion felt foreign, one that did not belong in the context of his work. And this date, this relationship — all of it was just work.[break][break]

When Summer stepped past Gunner's body to stand firm on the impromptu battlefield, Gunner's gaze snapped toward her. His expression was a mix of surprise and awe, the latter giving way to the former when she whirled around to kill a Beedrill with a thrown dagger.[break][break]

"Holy shit, Summer," he said, amazed by her speed and reflexes. Then his face broken into an impressed grin. "You're something else."[break][break]

Between Gunner's Blaziken and her Zoroark, the other Beedrills either fell unconscious or retreated back into the forest, defeated. Gunner recalled Caelia into her Pokéball before turning back to his date.[break][break]

"I'd ask if you're okay, but you can clearly handle yourself in a fight. Remind me not to get on your bad side." He chuckled lightly.

Truth be told, Gunner was still so jarred by the experience that he hadn't fully processed how significant it was. Death was supposed to be the end. He hadn't believed in any kind of afterlife until that night on Mt. Pyre when he'd witnessed the spirits streaming out of the Border. Now that death was less frightening, he struggled to view it with the same gravitas as before.[break][break]

"No rest for the weary, I guess." Gunner crested the same dune as Greyson with his Claydol in tow. "Though you're right, this place is pretty tame in comparison."[break][break]

And then Gunner nearly lost his balance when the tremors began again. Somehow, they seemed more violent than before. However, nothing came to the surface.[break][break]

The blonde's gaze swept the landscape in a quick arc. "Shit. Is it the worm again?"

Gunner's eyes widened in pleasant surprise. "A firefighter? That's a very honorable profession. I can understand wanting to get out from under your parents' thumb, too."[break][break]

His own parents had been so strict that whatever childhood he and GIDEON GRAVES expected to have had been stifled by their expectations.[break][break]

When Galayne expressed wonder about Guinevere, however, Gunner's surprise turned into confusion. Typhlosion were quite common, especially since Cyndaquil were popular first Pokémon for children interested in becoming trainers.[break][break]

But instead of commenting on how unworldly Galayne seemed in that moment, Gunner simply said, "She's a Typhlosion. The species is native to Johto, but they're so common nowadays that you can find them in a lot of regions, even here."[break][break]

For emphasis, Guinevere unleashed her flames, her shoulders suddenly wreathed in a fiery mane. Then the fire vanished, tucked away again as Guinevere lowered her head and closed her eyes again.[break][break]

Gunner smiled softly at Camille's Flabébé as the woman explained their relationship. "I feel that way with some of my other Pokémon, too. It's a wonderful bond."
