This was it—Frank's first semi-important mission since officially joining Team Rocket. Thus far, he had spent his days crunching numbers with his boss howard slayte and helping with smuggling logistics. But today, he was on the field. [break][break]

Not to do anything crazy or dangerous, of course. Leave that to the experienced, high-ranking members. No, Cillian Quinn had promised Frank that he wouldn't be put on the front lines. Instead, he was to explore an as-of-yet uncharted section of the Giant Chasm and compile a report on anything new or unusual. [break][break]

Despite the relatively low stakes of the assignment, the fissure in the earth was enormous and full of dangerous Pokémon. Frank was happy for a partner-in-crime; networking and making friends was his specialty. [break][break]

"It says here we're supposed to check out everything in a five-mile radius of the research station," he said to the young, black-haired woman who trudged through the dense, humid rainforest with him. [break][break]

What was her name, again? Layla? Leigh? [break][break]

"I doubt we'll be able to walk the whole thing in a day, so let's just see what's in this direction." [break][break]

He pointed to a spot on the rough map he held that indicated a river of some kind. His Obstagoon loped at his side, keeping an eye out for anything amiss. [break][break]

When Damien embraced Frank, the older man knew he'd gotten through to his friend. He wrapped his arms around Damien and squeezed him tightly. [break][break]

"I get it. Really, I do," Frank murmured, absently rubbing Damien's back with a hand. "You need to be with your family right now and think about things." [break][break]

He released the boy and gave him an encouraging look. [break][break]

"I'll give you a call tomorrow, okay? Or maybe even tonight, if Jackie's not gonna be a bitch about where I've been." Frank doubted the latter, though. "So keep your phone on you." [break][break]

If Damien allowed, they'd walk back to the house together, where they'd say their goodbyes and part ways. Frank knew it wouldn't be long before they saw each other again. He just had to be patient and weather the storm that was his wife.

Perhaps Frank was pushing it. After all, Damien needed time to process Frank's confession and deal with the grief of loss. With great reluctance, the older man released the younger one's face. His smile was a mix of hopeful and apologetic. [break][break]

"Of course. Now's not the right time. I'm just saying, Damien… I care about you a lot. I always have. And I want to be a bigger presence in your life." [break][break]

Frank shook his head and uttered a rueful chuckle. [break][break]

"I'm sorry it took this long for me to tell you." Then he held out his arms to offer a hug. "Let me know if there's anything I can do, all right? You know I'd drop everything for you."

thread summary:
After the failure of his legitimate business, Frank turned to contract work as a part-time smuggler for Team Rocket. His good friend, Underboss Cillian Quinn, meets with him during a routine delivery to discuss more permanent, long-term employment. Despite his reservations and concerns, Frank accepts.
why is it important?:
When I created Frank, I designed him to be a despicable person. Despite his good intentions, he consistently and frequently chooses vices that lead to strain in or the deterioration of his relationships. He likes high risk, high reward, and Cillian has gotten to know him well enough over the past year to understand this about him.

Now Frank has nowhere to turn to but Team Rocket's welcoming embrace and their hands that hold knives to his throat. And he is just a weak enough man to turn a blind eye to the danger he's put himself in.

"Don't get caught next time." [break][break]

Frank wanted to argue that he hadn't been the one who'd gotten caught last time. Instead, his employers had been caught by the feds at first. His involvement—and that of others at his level of management—had only been discovered during the ensuing investigation. [break][break]

Then he wanted to argue that Cillian had promised Team Rocket would protect him. Frank's recruitment had hinged on that promise: that Rockets looked after their own. That Cillian was his friend. [break][break]

Instead, Frank smiled. "Of course," he said, happy to embrace the new fantasy his new employers were building into a cage. [break][break]

He even chuckled at the mention of coffee and using Howard's employee discount. "Now that's what I'm talking about. Lead the way."

Frank understood the threat of Howard's words all too well. He'd heard the rumors. How much of them were true was something he did not wish to find out for himself. [break][break]

So he nodded. "Don't worry. I wouldn't have done it if my old bosses hadn't convinced me they had it all under control. And doing it now seems a bit of a… eh, biting the hand that feeds you." [break][break]

Contrary to some people's belief, Frank learned from past mistakes. He just simply ignored the lessons at times. This was one he knew better than to ignore. [break][break]

At the offer of advice, he tilted his head at Howard, curious. "I'm all ears."

Frank shrugged. "Black City's where I grew up and where the crime took place." [break][break]

He tried not to dwell on his years at the correctional facility. Once he'd realized the hard truth of his situation, a different man had emerged. One who could survive the demands of prison. One he did not find as appealing as the man he'd been before his arrest. [break][break]

"Oh, we're just friends. When I arrived in Hoenn, I started a small financial advisory company and Cillian was a client. But he invited me to lunch a few times and some outings, and we got talking. You know how it goes." [break][break]

"As for what I got convicted for," Frank blew air out of his cheeks, "it was mostly securities fraud—so, advising purchases and sales based on false information so we could line our pockets." [break][break]

That was his expertise, after all. Financial guidance. [break][break]

"We also stole from the company—that is, my bosses and me. They got me into the whole thing. They made me feel like one of the guys, you know?" he admitted, no matter how lame it sounded. Surely, Howard couldn't blame Frank for wanting to feel liked and included by his employers.

Frank let Howard guide him away from the Tyrantrum skeleton and the main crowds of people. Large slabs of glittering gems and unusual rocks greeted them in the next exhibit. [break][break]

The hall was not devoid of other visitors, however. Frank eyed them with apprehension before answering the admin, his voice suddenly low and serious, "I do. Cillian didn't tell you?" [break][break]

He assumed his new employers knew everything already. [break][break]

"Three years in Black City Correctional Facility for fraud and embezzlement. Cil promised nothing bad would happen this time, though." [break][break]

Regret laced Frank's words—not for the crimes themselves, but for the fact he'd been caught and punished for them.

Frank's hand shot out to snatch the coin from the air. He peered at it, his trained eyes immediately recognizing it as a fabrication. Worthless when held up to scrutiny, but as Howard articulately explained, certain groups were known to pay a fortune for its manufacture. [break][break]

"Nothing wrong with appreciating both, though," Frank mused aloud, his thoughts wandering to the collection of luxury watches he'd had to sell to pay for rent. A collection he was keen on rebuilding. [break][break]

Pocketing the fake coin, he refocused his attention back on Howard and grinned. "A museum would be a cakewalk compared to the stock market, I think. Sure, why not? It might be fun." [break][break]

And anyway, based on Cillian Quinn's promises, Frank wouldn't have to rely solely on the museum for a paycheck.

Frank could understand uniqueness. Designer items—from cars to clothing—were rare because of their monetary value. As a result, seeing someone drive down the street in an expensive car was a unique experience, one that both the owner of the car and those viewing it could appreciate. [break][break]

So he nodded at Howard's words. "I get you." [break][break]

The admin was right about another thing, too: it was a cover job like any other. No one would expect the likes of them, dressed casually and surrounded by nerdy things, to be criminals. [break][break]

Laughter bubbled from Frank's lips at Howard's comment that money was worthless. [break][break]

"Maybe, or maybe it's worth exactly what value people assign to it. Take it from me, Boss. I've handled people's money for years now. The stock market's as volatile and bloody as a tank full of Sharpedo."

Frank glanced around, skepticism plain on his face. "I dunno… Museums rely a lot on charity, don't they? They're not exactly the kind of place I think of when I think about money." [break][break]

Naturally, every institution needed someone to handle the financial side of things. But he liked to imagine that working "the financial side of things" produced wealth in excess, fancy dinners, the newest cars. Not… whatever it was museums did. [break][break]

To be honest, Frank wasn't really a museum guy. [break][break]

But Howard was supposed to be his new boss, and his bosses had never let him down before. (Except the one time they got him arrested.) So he shrugged and turned back to the eyepatched man, an easy smile on his face. [break][break]

"But if you say there's money to be made here, who am I to disagree? You're the one who's in the know."

Upon the completion of his official processing to join Team Rocket, Frank had been directed to seek out howard slayte, one of the admin. After a few encrypted exchanges, they agreed to meet at the National Museum of Natural History—a choice that had surprised Frank up until he saw Howard in person. [break][break]

His pale violet eyes lowered to the front of the other man's sweatshirt at the question. "Because you like prehistoric Pokémon?" Frank ventured. [break][break]

Like Howard, Frank did not dress in any way to announce his newfound allegiance. A long-sleeved, collared shirt, dark denim jeans, and comfortable walking shoes completed his ensemble. [break][break]

He hated looking so middle-class and being reminded of his origins, but he was supposed to blend in at the museum, not stand out. [break][break]

Another thought occurred to Frank after a beat. "Or is this where you work?" [break][break]

Meaning his day-to-day business, not his Team Rocket business.
