vera nods after selena's explanation with no more than a passing comment. "a good call," she says. certainly, air traffic is one of lilycove's biggest problems. one of the downsides to living in a thriving metropolis.

"i'm just a chemist. nothing fancy," vera assures her, brushing off any importance that she might have within the league. truthfully, she's never been good at recognizing her own worth. "i'm currently researching the properties of certain berries on pokémon." and that's about as much as she can tell selena under her nda.

luckily for vera, the appearance of another boat in the near distance would steal the spotlight from her. unluckily for her, one of the men on said boat has a huge harpoon in his hand. ready to aim.

"bad news. really bad news. biscuit, help me with thar harpoon!"

the heliolisk's collar expands into a wide circle. his tail glows white. the

razor wind

resulting from it catches the harpoon midair and pushes it back, giving them some time to formulate a plan.

"if we try to avoid them, we might lead them to the weather station. we might have to confront them."

it's not a guess, but an affirmation, that follows her words. vera realizes with a tilt of her head that she'll have to correct the misunderstanding.

"well, i've actually been back for three years now," she laughs, the faintest hint of rose showing on her cheeks. quickly covering it up, she places a pensive finger on her cheek. "you might not have seen me because my manager likes keeping us locked up in the lab."

selena's hand is accepted. thankfully, the boat is spacious enough for the two and the various pokémon to fit in. vera heads towards the steering wheel, waiting only in case selena wants to be the one at the wheel. in that case, she could instead stand guard.

"enough of me, though. where are we dropping these cuties off?"

"did you hear that, boys? the gentleman thinks you're nice," vera teases them. her boys, as she calls them, are in the middle of an out-of-water lesson of surf. fondue, the raichu, can use his tail as a makeshift board, but the pikachu only has the sand under his toes for his attempt.

with the necessary teasing out of the way, vera lets out a soft laugh while turning towards the newcomers. "i'm sure your swampert can give them a master class too." she knows swamperts to be great swimmers, as a general rule. she also knows the face of the man in front of her.

vera has nothing to do with the rangers branch of the league, but still her posture straightens. the thought of being caught lounging around by a higher-up, regardless of branch and even on her time off, threatens to fluster her. "mr. anderson, sir. what brings you here?" naturally, the two wild pokémon that show up at roughly the same time as him go by unnoticed.

the task makes her feel like an assistant all over again. on her first day at the lab after completing her studies abroad. it's a fleeting worry that soon flies away with the wind.

"vera," she takes selena's hand easily, trusting. the movement that the castforms try to imitate has her smiling widely, and then a very curious thought crosses her mind. "wait, aren't you the gym leader?"

of course she is. vera can see it now. the woman may have seen many gym leaders throughout her life, but she's never late to keep up with the league's celebrities, so to speak.

"born here, and i've come back to work here as well."

and then, at the tug of her shirt, she looks down to the heliolisk hiding behind her until that moment. "oh! right. sorry, buddy. this dapper fellow here is biscuit."

maybe she shouldn't have ticked the option to pick up at the store. vera really doesn't know what she was thinking. actually, she thought the store was in lilycove itself and she could just drop by on her way back from work. what a mistake. even though the company's headquarters were indeed in lilycove, the store she'd picked was not. while a call may have fixed the location for her, she didn't think it through, grabbed her coat and left for oldale town.

"sorry, pretzel," she says hours later to the magnezone giving her a ride. "i was dumb. ugh, just wait until alric hears of this." they don't make a u-turn only because they're already almost to their destination and they might as well give the lab there a visit.

the river bank in route 118 has become one of vera's favorite to teach her pokémon how to swim. or surf. whichever they prefer. warded off from waves, which inevitably break with the row of rocks placed on each side, its waters are calmer than a river and drift less than the open sea.

some of her friends find it harder than others, truthfully. today, it's strudel the pikachu's turn. they're accompanied by vera'a alolan raichu, someone strudel had started to treat as a teacher and adoptive older brother. it warms her heart whenever she sees them, be it talking or teaching each other a new trick.

vera sits back to enjoy the moment, and it's not until she feels a foreign presence that she reopens them and turns in their direction.

SUMMER SURPRISES: BEACH PARTY

vera can't believe her project manager has had her shut in for so long. she understands she wanted to finish going over every step of the procedure for her report, and that's completely fair. but on the last day of the beach party? now that's unforgivable. even strudel, her pikachu who had stolen the dancefloor last year, was looking forward to it. she hurries outside, lab coat discarded and a combination of plain t-shirt and shorts donned in its stead. her only comfort is that alric is also too busy to attend, so she wouldn't be missing out on quality time with her partner.

up among the clouds, she sees the telling sparks of a wormhole. it's impossible not to, as ominously as it hangs over their heads. her pace quickens, but it's only a second before it disappears.

"wait, is the party already over?"

"they really gave you a handful," vera chuckles as she approaches the pink-haired woman and the entire pack of castform floating around her. she can't quite close the gap, given their presence, but that's honestly okay with the ginger. they're strangers, after all.

she doesn't want to assume, but handling this many pokémon would be difficult for even the best of trainers. her offer is "want some help?" vera herself was on her way to the local weather institute, after hearing the news of them looking for volunteers. joining forces could hit two birds with a stone.

don't worry, is what life may want to tell her. the first green dog may be gone, but in comes a new green dog to cheer her up. or perhaps a fox would be a better way to describe the leafeon. without letting go of her dear fondue, vera gazes up at it.

her world seems to brighten as soon as she catches sight of its leaf-life ears and tail. literally. the

sunny day

becomes too strong.

"hey, beautiful." she crouches down to leafeon-level. her hands run through its head and ears, and the pokémon answers affectionately. "i know the perfect place for you. do you like flower gardens?"

young vera would take the leafeon to said flower garden, and even make a flower crown for it, if only for the chance to play with such a pretty pokémon. evidently, she's also thrilled that it (she, vera later finds out) enjoys her company so much she'd follow.

yes, this time they have been authorized entry into the maze of old underground passageways that make new mauville. vera offers her mission partner a cheeky grin. "aren't you glad you woke up insanely early today?"

after returning her vikavolt to his pokéball, vera slides inside the building through the opening that leonardo has created. her fingers don't have to look for any switches this time around. the lights turn on as soon as the door is opened. that's new. makes her wish she hadn't sneaked in so clumsily the first time, so that she didn't have to find alternative sources of light. then again, she probably wouldn't have met leonardo, and wouldn't be here today.

"that would be because you guys keep holing up in your lab all day lately. vera laughs, though this is no joke—ever since the strange creatures showed up in what more and more people are convinced are portals to different dimensions, thanks in good measure to leonardo's research, the physics team nextdoors had been particularly busy.

stopping beside the stairs that would lead them down to the lower levels, she calls for leonardo's attention. "so," she says, propping up against the railing. "before we dive in, any plans?"

the mane poking out from behind the tree stump is a dead giveaway of the species lying in wait under the shadow it casts and the tall grass. vera walks the remaining steps on a stride, almost jumping, until her palms collide against the trunk and her upper body is propelled on top. "hi."

vera's cheeky grin is answered with a startled bark. the electrike seems to want to engage with vera and her alolan raichu: it circles the stump that the ginger's taken as chair with another pair of barks, but then it runs past and into the woods. she watches the dog go with a bit of sadness in her heart.

"was it something i said?" she asks her raichu. fondue moves his head as if shaking it, and vera isn't sure if that's meant to be a yes or a no. she purses her lips, but lets go of the topic rather quickly. instead of worrying about a friendship that could have been but wasn't, she'd rather focus on the ones she has and may lose.

arms open in invitation, vera brings the raichu into an embrace, as comforting as it is warm. "what should i do, fondue?" she asks, feeling deflated.
