she shouldn't have been so nervous, she realizes when the innocent smile of a castform greets her. vera returns the smile. this castform may be nowhere near as affectionate as the ones she'd relocated to a tower just outside lilycove with the city's gym leader, but it's still a cutie.

vera steps forward in an attempt to give the pokémon a pat, but recoils back at the cold that begins right where the castform ends. it doesn't help that the castform is floating forward as well, as if to meet in the middle. vera would really prefer not to freeze to death before she has a chance to find the morpeko she's looking for.

eventually, a silent mutual agreement is reached and they part ways, each with a path of their own. "see you, sweetie." she waves at the castform. this time, vera's steps are calm.

vera looks up at selena one last time as she readies herself to jump. “next time,” she agrees. the terms of the agreement are vague, but that's fine. lilycove isn’t that big a city when one knows where to look.

it's vera's first time in the safari zone. ever. feelings of restlessness and excitement are intermingled in her pace, a little more jouncy than the usual. the alolan raichu that floats on his tail beside her makes a sudden stop, forcing two heads to turn in unison.

there's something in the tall grass, and the something appears to be just as restless as she herself feels, if the erratic movement of the grass blades is any indicatition.

leads them to an electivire, which counts as neither of the pokémon she's currently searching for. vera tilts her head, leaning towards the ampharos without quite touching her. "i think we've got the wrong size," she states humorously. certainly, the first-stage baby pokémon usually handed out to first-timers do not share too many similarities with the electivire.

the woman's eyes don't leave the wild pokémon's though. a pair of kind eyes stare back. vera considers them slowly, unhurriedly. her, she decides, based on the delicate stance she adopts.

had the electivire not taken the first step, vera may not have attempted to befriend her. she already has an elekid back home to take care of, but then again her impressionable boy may benefit from a same-species mentor. in the end, after minutes of wordless bonding time, she offers the electivire a pokéball to lodge in.

the stray spark misses vera and her alolan raichu by a long shot, honestly, but it certainly catches her attention. her ponytail, caught at the precise moment in which it was being retied, swings left and right as she turns towards the spark's source. jade-colored eyes narrow in an attempt to distinguish the figures in the far distance.

three small splashes of color, one considerably bigger than the others. they grow bigger as she steps in their direction.

"are you three okay?" she calls, both hands cupped around her mouth. her pace quickens despite not being invited to join the small party. instead, another issue lingers on her mind. "no injuries or burns, i hope?"

"oh?" vera can't help the surprise showing on her features and voice. she hadn't been given the small satisfaction of attending the aforementioned summer pokéathlons herself. really, she's still disappointed and even a little sour about it. "i can only imagine. make sure to call me next time to cheer you on," she answers cheekily, not letting her forced absence overcome her.

the climb starts out relatively slow. vera's attention remains on the other woman at first, unsure of how experience she might be at the sport. it's not until she speaks up again that vera is reminded of the situation. the plan makes her more anxious than she wants to admit. she wants to offer assistance, but realizes that the sooner she reports back, the sooner special forces would look into it. perhaps reinforcements would be sent.

besides, she's certain selena is by all means capable of handling herself.

"alright, but be careful. my rotom phone won't stop ringing you otherwise." how exactly she'd get her number is left up to interpretation.

before even being able to embark on her way back to lilycove, vera has to make the usual round around oldale's lab. sometimes, the aforementioned round was merely a social call with some fellow scientists. other times, it meant going back out to help with some task or another.

today, she has to help the professor find all three of the pokémon that were meant to be issued to new kids looking for an adventure. again. both of her hands would not be enough to count the times she'd had to do this by now.

the idea that the crew might be something more than pirates hangs in the air. it's scary. vera honestly can't begin to imagine a worst-case scenario. but selena's words bring her back to earth, and she answers with a knowing grin. "at your service!"

as promised, vera's galvantula is released from her pokéball to lead the trek up the hill from where their boat is moored. they happen to be on the cliff side of the island, a landform at which vera stares with calculating eyes. an unorthodox plan brews in her mind. "the slope makes it juuust safe enough," she muses, before finally turning to selena. "i'll have to ask you to trust me. we're taking a shortcut."

flies from the galvantula's spinnerets at incredible speed at her trainer's non-verbal command. a string is formed, thin but sturdy, and it begins to encircle the castforms one by one. eventually, if allowed, it'd secure both trainers and accompanying pokémon and pull them up, up, up.

she can only offer a small smile to her would-be 'climbing' partners. "i hope you're not afraid of heights."

as expected of a gym leader. vera's never had to question the capabilities of one. with a plan decided on and already put into action, vera doesn't even have to take out a second pokémon or, really, do anything much. her only contribution is to help herd the castforms inside the speedboat's cabin. even then, the task honestly takes no time because the castforms are just that well-behaved.

"when we reach the island, my galvantula can clear the way for us, if needed. what worries me is," vera stops mid-sentence to venture a look back, as if the pirate boat could still be seen in the distance. it can't. "i thought pirates were already taken care of. we'll have to fill a report on this when we're back."

truffle hasn't been able to find a playmate to challenge to a soccer match yet, which makes the magnetically-induced frown on his face deepen. he's already gone through the entire daycare, which leaves only the newcomer left.

as an alolan graveler, truffle can easily roll his way anywhere in a matter of seconds. that's how he closes the distance between his previous location and the daycare's gate.

rather than introduce himself, the graveler has only two words to offer: "you're on." he assumes the soccer ball that he hands over to the pokémon is enough explanation of what's going on.

the magnezone may be seen as the complete opposite of the excitable shinx. pretzel hovers high above the ground, where it's comfortable, and only reduces its chosen altitude when the electricians in charge are done giving their instructions to the team. this may be the magnezone's first time helping out at a project like this, but it's lived all its life manipulating magnetic fields. the task at hand would be no problem for it.

given its size, the magnezone should have been given its own station, but the reality of the matter is that most of the pokémon sent in to help out at the dock are of comparable size. therefore, it's made to share the area with another electric-type. pretzel would have preferred more privacy, but doesn't protest. thankfully, it's still spacious enough for the two not to interfere with each other.

, charged to affect the area directly around it and not its partner. it wouldn't do to disturb them, after all. next, the horseshoe magnets on its sides begin to glow a golden hue that indicates its ability is being activated to
