“Then you must be doing a good job, right?” She looked to the Absol for agreement. “I don’t know, I’m pretty new to this… But if your guys are clever, and they want to help you, and they’re like your friends, then you must be doing something right! That’s what they say on the TV, anyway.” Which was where the majority of her trainer knowledge came from, for better or worse. “And if not… Well, at least they like you!”

Eggs. Finally, her time to shine. She marches up to the stove. “Of course! Fortunately for you, I’m a master at cracking eggs!” It was, perhaps, the only ingredient she knew how to use well, if only by painful trial and error. “My Fortuna, she lays the best eggs, and we end up eating them with something most nights.” Not out of choice. “Don’t tell her that I said it, because don’t get me wrong, they’re great, but anything starts to taste a bit dull when you’ve had it five days in a row.”

True to her claims (this time), two taps opened two eggs into the bowl he’d provided. “Just let me know when we’re good!” And if her general demeanour was a warning, she’d empty out the whole carton without guidance.

A lone Sneasel continued what was quickly becoming routine for him. He waited outside one of the city’s many malls, hopping to be mistaken for some nearby trainer’s beat. Civilians would gather to take pictures, or check their shopping, or take a call. As more and more people arrived, he was effectively hidden in the huddle of humans. They were a good smokescreen. Slanted eyes watched for easy prey – a phone hanging out of a pocket, a loose bracelet, a note poking out of a wallet. He briskly walked, the ‘clumsy bump’ against them disguising him going for their goods. They’d notice that something was wrong, usually within seconds, but he’d have long since disappeared into the crowds with his prize, to meet his young master.

Annie leaned against a wall, in a nearby alleyway – far enough that her partner could make sure they weren’t being tailed, but close enough to act as backup if he was. Even if he had a knack for thievery, he was new to her team and to an urban setting. An easy mistake could land them both in big trouble, which was why she let out a sigh of relief every time he returned. “Good job, buddy,” she spoke, in a quiet voice reserved for their operations. His efforts were rewarded with a rub on the head. “What’ve you got for us this time?”

It was a win-win situation. Blitz, as he was now called, was able to prove his worth to his new pack. Annie could sell the fruits of his labour to ensure that they weren’t eating boiled Chansey eggs for the fourth night in a row. The owner of the pawn shop got to severely undercut the girl, because who else was she going to sell obviously stolen goods to? And the tourists, well… They were tourists, or suits, or snobby rich folk that had too much money anyway. They got to enjoy a little bonus shopping, once they realised that their pockets had been relieved.

At least, that was what she told herself. It helped to numb the pang of guilt she felt every time she ‘borrowed’ from a stranger. She was just doing what she had to, she reminded herself. She was in a foreign land with no support – just her and the Pokemon she’d met on the way. If it kept them happy and her alive, then it was worth doing… Right?

The girl furrowed her brow, drawn from her thoughts by Blitz’ latest delivery. A wallet. “Huh? Oh, no, no… Blitz, we don’t take wallets!” She did her best to keep her voice hushed, but the alarm shone through regardless. “Money, sure, but not somebody’s whole wallet…! Damnit…” Pragmatically, wallets were bad news. A tourist might not bat an eye if they were missing a few pokedollars, but take their bank card and their ID and suddenly they were much more eager to recover their goods. It would make them hang around in the area, or even put the authorities on alert, and then their job got a lot harder. Annie’s better half couldn’t help but agree. It was one thing to yoink a few dollars so they could eat or have a roof over their head for the night. It was another to ruin somebody’s day to do so, and a lot harder to justify in her head.

“No, it’s not your fault. You didn’t know.” Whispers hoped to combat a distraught look on Blitz’ face. “It’s okay. Well, it’s not… but I’ll handle it. We just need to get rid of it somehow. Somewhere that it’ll be found, probably. Don’t worry.” She was trying to convince herself more than she was commanding him, but he nodded all the same. She took a deep breath in, stowed the wallet into her pocket and strolled out of the alley…

Oh, heck no. Annie puffed up her chest and put on her best stern face. “I am performing valuable and rarely-seen Pokemon mental welfare checks! Everybody needs a hug once in a while! They just happen to be very good at being hugged! Besides, while I’m on the move, I can observe the situation from different viewpoints! Or, er, angles! I’m making sure that nothing is missed.” She nodded in agreement with herself.

Not that it helped, for the man had already seen right through her. All at once, the act dropped, and her body drooped forward. “…Yes, sir…” She stood up straight. Both hands gestured to the flock. “Look at them! They’re begging for love and kindness! If you even tried to put a hand on them, Mister Guy, you wouldn’t be able to resist!”

Annie’d felt uncomfortable enough before the man approached. She swivelled around as best she good whilst wearing half her weight, only to find… Him. A man covered in tattoos and piercings, with an oddly pointy face and the eyes of a demon. He looked like a thug. And not the regular kind of thug, that might glare at you from an alleyway. This was a Super Thug, the kind rarely seen outside of Saturday morning cartoons.

She took a step back, too bewildered by his appearance to remember to show her brave face. “Er… I...” Was she about to get mugged? He was out of luck – she didn’t even have enough money to own a wallet. He could have her sleeping bag if it meant that he’d back the heck off, but she’d die before he got his inky hands on her Pokeballs…

The girl was lost in her own thoughts, and appeared to be frozen in fear, eyes wide and mouth hanging open. It took the sight of a more immediate danger – that was, a pair of Pokemon charging their attacks over Evan’s shoulder – to drag her back to reality. Her hand moved of its own accord to grab a ball, and her mind caught up shortly after. “Bolt, get rid of the trouble!” She shouted as the ball released a beam of energy, contorting upon impact with the ground to form her Shinx. A little cat with a big voice, as demonstrated by his Roar sending one of their would-be attackers running.

Eggs were a-go! “I’ve never made anything that tastes bad!” Mostly because she only cooked when hunger forced her hand, and everything tasted delicious on an empty stomach. The girl shooed her away, and Annie, doing her best not to take slight offense, hurried off to get the job done.

She tried to remember the last time she’d been allowed to use an oven. She quickly realised that such an event had never taken place. Something about not letting small, manic children near gas appliances. She only had a third of an oven to work with, but supposedly that was all she needed. Her eyes danced over the table. Not much, but it was enough to make a start.

No eggs necessary. Yet.

Four minutes later and Annie had… a success?! Granted, rice crispie treats were notoriously difficult to mess up, and Annie had mixed the batch enough to hide any burnt spots of marshmallow. The only glaring issue was with their shape, and perhaps, with her delivery. “Step right up, ladies and gentlemen!” She’d taken on the demeanour of a radio announcer from decades gone by. “Weeeee’ve got ourselves here a lovely new breakfast treat that’s sweeping the nation! See here, folks, I’m about to introduce your daaaarling city to… Rice! Crispie! Rhombuses!”

If nothing else, boy, could she give a performance. The incredulousness of her pitch didn’t stop her from – or perhaps, emboldened her to – march across the venue, head held high and tray of plates held even higher.

“Yep-yep, that’s right! These delightful desserts are the result of minutes of ground-breaking research! Like a rollercoaster of sugary goodness, the rhombusy nature of these treats guarantees that you’ll meet the absolute peak of your dining experience right in the middle! Before that, you’ll build up to candy heaven, and spend the rest of your time with this beauty slowly coming back down to earth, thinking of what a wonderful experience you’d just… experienced! All of this can be yours for just… Er… How much are we selling these for?”

“Ah, right… So you’re like an orphanage for Pokemon.” Annie paused. Frowned. One of the downsides of running one’s mouth was that words tended to spill out without much thought. Words that said a lot about the way she saw the world. Things that near-strangers didn’t really need to know. “…Not that that’s a bad thing! Everybody deserves a chance, and it sucks that some people or Pokemon get written off just because something’s a little wonky with them.” I don’t see anything wrong with you, by the way.” Her eyes shifted back to Phantom, and her voice shifted into a tone otherwise reserved for babies. “You’re just a perfect little melty boy.” If he didn’t shy away, the girl would dare to give him a little pat atop his head as they left the room.

Into the kitchen – a room Annie realised she hadn’t seen in weeks. Hostels, shacks, restaurants and clearings in the forest weren’t known for their stellar food rooms. With that in mind, it wasn’t too surprising that the girl seemed fascinated by the treated wood, or the shiny stove, or the microwave or the pantry. “…You keep this place clean! I’m impressed.” Bold words, considering the state that she was in, but she wouldn’t leave him much time to comment on it. “Oh, can we? Please? If you have enough, I mean. They deserve something nice too and all… And so do yours! Team Oreo was like a well-oiled machine! The way your Katas knew who could help before you did, and your, er… two-tailed purple dude brought the rain out! My everything was wet for a while there, but it was super helpful for putting out the fire!”

I'm 100% down with this! A tavern made up of wanderers sounds like a lovely concept,
Annie could use a good mother hen in her life, and having him be able to relate is a big bonus. There's so many plots to spring out of this! The ideas have me excited.

I'd only ask if it'd be possible to have a thread of her being hired. Having a home to go back to, and a semi-permanent job, seems like something worth writing about (and I'd presume that finding another stray would be good for evan too)!

Had Annie been paying the man any mind, she wouldn’t have hesitated to complain about his lack of care. Unfortunately – or perhaps fortunately for him – she was preoccupied by more important matters. Namely, that she was surrounded by a swarm of absurdly fluffy Pokemon, never before seen in the region. She hadn’t stopped moving since they’d arrived, bouncing back and forth between the Wooloo. Even if she wasn’t being watched, her occasional squeals of joy marked her movement throughout the flock. Rushing around, petting and cooing and hugging the poor beasts hadn’t done wonders for their demeanour at first, but they had very slowly realised that she didn’t mean much harm.

That, and her targets realised it would end faster if they let her get it over with.

“I could do this forever!” she called to the man, only to look over and realise that he was lying down on the job. Unacceptable! She stomped over to the man, planted her hands on her hips and leaned over to stare at him. “We’re supposed to be watching the Wooloo, not writing about them! Shouldn’t you, you know, be on your feet? Making sure that they’re safe?”

Crawling around in the grass made it hard to notice when danger was approaching. Annie learned that the hard way – it wasn’t until Big Ol’ Manly Man Trainer commanded his monster that she jerked her head out, just in time to see a jet of flames char a bug Pokemon. “Hey, a little warning would be nice!” she called, disregarding that:
1) The attack was nowhere near her.
2) She was too distracted by the attack to notice another beast about to ambush her.
3) She was also too distracted to notice her ‘little black fox’ rushing to the rescue.
Said fox sprang from the grass and landed atop Annie’s head, much to her visible chagrin. Her look of surprise went unacknowledged by him, for the Zorua had already set his sights elsewhere. Specifically, at the Marowak mere feet away, armed and ready to strike. It wouldn’t get the chance. The fox’s eyes took on a blue glow, and its body a red one. The latter expanded from the beast’s body, rushing outwards to greet the would-be attacker with dark force. “Huh?” The girl whipped her head around (and the Zorua teetered as it attempted to stay on top) to see a Marowak knocked off it’s feet. In other words, a downed Pokemon ripe for the taking. “Alright! Looks like Trainer Annie’s secured another victory!” With those words, a Pokeball was thrown, and if she was lucky, a Pokemon was captured.
