Post-shower, Bailey Cooper had felt successful in her efforts to scrub away the grim of their Ultra Space adventure; skin flushed, almost raw, as she shoved a bare arm through the sleeve of her leather jacket.[break][break]

In her other hand, her deceased stowaway.[break][break]

Crinkled, lifeless paper body.[break][break]

The next morning, she was bound for Evergrande, keeping the remains of the Ultra Beast tucked in a folded tissue. The whole ride, she found herself careful to not disturb it.[break][break]

Lucas Lane would have suggestions. He would think of something to do with the paper construct.[break][break]

She stepped into the League Headquarters, feeling distracted as she made her way to an empty meeting room; somewhere private.[break][break]

“Sorry, bud,” she'd mutter to the lifeless creature. “I was just doing what I had to do,” but somehow, some sensation of guilt still lingered.[break][break]

kyle sits on the corner of the said meeting room, a hand digging deep into his hair. he stresses himself out in front of a laptop, where a blank word document haunts him as it waits to be filled.

although the elite four have health insurance to cover for hospitalization, he takes it upon himself to be responsible for both mateo and noelle while they're both admitted until their relatives come in. there was also the report concerning the events that transpired that needs to be submitted, but his mind has been too numb to conjure any relevant sentence that translates his thoughts to words.

bailey's entrance is a welcomed distraction. his head slowly swivels from looking at the screen to the door, where he finds his fellow elite four member being weird. she hangs out with Lucas Lane so much that kyle isn't even surprised with the behavior anymore.

he waits for her to notice his presence instead of calling her out, mostly because he's too stressed with the recent happenings to even think of a good greeting to spew out.

It felt like there was a pit in her stomach.[break][break]

Bailey slicked back her bangs, trying to push them away from her eyes; a comforting motion to try and distract herself from the tangela-like coil that continued to toil in the empty expanse of her gut. She had skipped breakfast. She had skipped lunch.[break][break]

It was hard to eat when she felt like this. Stress persisted, even when the endeavor was behind her. It lingered, tauntingly, like a reminder that her job was not finished—that the universe still dwelt behind corners, waiting to catch her with her guard lowered.[break][break]

When had she become paranoid?[break][break]

“Fuck,” and it was only when she sighed and leaned back that she caught Kyle's tired gaze.[break][break]

A distraction. It caught her from her spiral, keeping her from feeding a beast that had grown since Mossdeep. “You manage to get some sleep?”[break][break]

Her hand coiled around the Ultra Beast, corners of the napkin frayed between her grasp; careful to not crush, only to conceal.

he breaks into an awkward smile, almost to a cringe, in a genuine attempt to look friendly. "i tried," he answers indirectly.

he looks back at the monitor of his laptop, stretching with an audible grunt as he reclines to the back of his seat.

"i'm trying to make a report for that trip, actually. the more i write about this, the more i think this looks like some sixteen year old's fantasy adventure novel."

he opts to be vague about the source of the portal and has decided to gloss over Stormy Silph being an avatar in it. the forest fire was his favorite part since it definitely looked like some random part of a story kyle would add.

kyle blinks at his work of art before he turns back to bailey.

"so, what are you here for? same thing as me? you can continue writing this for me if you want." a tired chuckle escapes kyle as he extends an invitation to her.

Bailey knew her laugh was strained, pulled taunt by her own duress.[break][break]

“You wouldn't want my help. I think I failed English,” and that subtle jab at her own faults left tension to quiver like an earthquake, threatening to fissure.[break][break]

The adventure had been a success, but it had come with its own cost. As these costs kept building, in every little failing, Bailey Cooper rationalized that it could have been done better; that, because she thought of herself as a fuck-up, these scenarios were preventable.[break][break]

She fought against this process, but it was so deeply ingrained to “take blame” that she struggled when to let go.[break][break]

“I'm waiting on Lucas,” and her secret was laid plan as she gently laid out the tissue, “we had a stowaway.”[break][break]

There was no point keeping it a secret, but the truth of the crumpled creature still made her lips twitch into a frown.

kyle's confusion when he hears the word 'stowaway' turns to dismay when bailey shows him something he never would have thought to see again. it confirms that he wasn't just high that night at least, although his disappointment lies somewhere else.

"do you want me to include that here or am i omitting that as well?"

he moves away from the laptop to inspect her souvenir, taking this as an opportunity to procrastinate from the report. this one wasn't charred like the entirety of the forest they dropped in from the portal. he starts poking it with a finger.

"what do you want lane for? i'm not sure if he can help with living things."

the only rumors he heard from Lucas Lane was that he always kills everything he touches and that he can't even keep a pet fish.

Nature toiled, uncaring for who those who proclaimed it cruel. In a reality separated from this one, creatures existed without human interference. In that absence, there were no trainers. There were no battles. There was only the ongoing fight for survival.[break][break]

It was hard to hate something merely because it existed, even if it could be capable of great harm.[break][break]

“Lane's the only jackass I know in our science department, and I don't feel like explaining this shit to anyone else.”[break][break]

“Everyone's gonna freak the fuck out. Yeah, sure, the thing is dead, but that doesn't change the fact that it managed to sneak back with us,” and her fingers sought her temples, just to rub away the oncoming headache, “and every clown in this fuckin' political bullshit likes to blow everything out of the water. What? Am I gonna have to hear about this... aquatic initiative? The fuck is it called? Aqua? Whatever. Fuckin' made to fight Ultra Beasts, and I'm the only one fucking fighting them. Her breath ran hot, and she breathed to air out her last puff of hostility.[break][break]

kyle tries to absorb everything coming from bailey's mouth, but he's too tired from all the accumulated stress from the new year's raid and the midnight expedition to ultra space to comprehend everything that she said with clarity. all he got was the last part of her spiel.

"that's why i denied tapu koko last summer. fuck that aqua shit."

his hands move to the kartana subconsciously, as if trying to distract himself with something he can fidget about. he finds it hard to believe that swarms of these pokemon were dangerous enough to threaten their lives but the one on his hand is just as useless as a limp paper-type pokemon, which it is.

'wonder if it's gonna kill me if it's alive'

a burst of blue flames come out of kyle's palms, igniting the kartana with sparks as it stirs from his grip. in a panic, the elite four promptly throws it up in the air, where it remained to float before them.

"shit! i thought it was dead."

it doesn't seem to have as much fervor as it did during their time in ultra space, however.

he attempts to locate any pokeballs in his person, only to find none of them at the moment. he backs away, kicking the chair so that he wheels off of the table, grabs his phone from his pockets, and starts to shake the rotom out of the device.

"fuck! rotom, defend me!"

the rotom eventually separates itself from the phone thanks to kyle's incessant shaking. it puts itself in between its trainer and the kartana, who the rotom stares at with curiosity. this pokemon had access to the internet and never has it seen a pokemon such as the kartana.

kyle recognizes his pokemon's moment of lull and snaps it out of the daze with a whistle. while it's not as active as it was before, it was better to be safe than sorry.

"j-just fire a thunder wave!"

as the trainer had instructed, the electric-type fires off a thin wave of electricity at the ultra beast. it convulses as paralysis hits as it lays on the surface of the table.

kyle turns to bailey, eyes looking for hers. 'what next?' was what his stare told her.

“Shit, shit—!” and the binder was dropped as a moment of brilliance dawned in Bailey's mind. As thunder wave washed over the strange paper construct, she would rush to the empty container.[break][break]

A pokeball had failed to constrain these creatures, so she would have to rely on something more primitive.[break][break]

The soon-to-be Champion would bring the glass down over the Kartana, sealing it in a transparent prison.[break][break]

“Gotcha! Try starting a fire in there!” and Kyle's ability to revive the creature went unnoticed as Bailey attributed the flames to the Ultra Beast's own craftiness.

kyle finally has the time to relax once bailey traps it inside a glass. he steps in and stares at it much closer as his rotom returns back to his phone.

he was still in disbelief that they have one of the creatures from ultra space in captive, especially one that wasn't dead. it moves around and wasn't just a zombie. it definitely wasn't just a hallucination brought by being tired from their previous escapade either.

"so... are you gonna keep it?" he asks bailey. "what do you plan on naming it?"

part of him wants to negotiate for the sake of keeping a rare pokemon in his possession given that he already has a growing collection of them with his type:null and cosmog, but reading the manual that came with the former made him reluctant. he was pretty sure his type:null would try to kill that ultra beast.

Rather than struggle, it seemed to still in the soft crux of her palms; razor-thin appendages raised to drape over her fingers. More akin to a toy than a pokemon, the kartana was expressionless. Maybe as a product of its own exhaustion, it does not fight as one of her fingers gently touched the tip of its horn.[break][break]

there's a long sigh followed by kyle pinching the bridge of his nose. maybe he's tired. he wants to think it's the reason, and then he remembers he has a jolteon named miss pine still on his pc and the feeling wasn't so much different than then.

"shredder, yeah. good name," he mentions in a dismissive, but indulgent tone.

he takes his seat back once bailey has it in her hands. if it cuts her, that's on her. his eyes were still on the ultra beast regardless of his thoughts instead of the laptop, perhaps procrastinating on completing the report.

"can you add the cosmog to this deal? thanks. i'll tell you the next time i go for another adventure in exchange."

he had shown it to some people, not all of which he'd ask to keep quiet about it specifically. kyle assumes they all have the common sense to keep quiet about it, much like him in this report he's supposed to write.
