Physical therapy has all but restored full function to Gavin's right arm, the injury to his shoulder having mostly healed. Still he pushes himself: eighty-percent, ninety, it wasn't good enough. He wouldn't be satisfied until it was as if he hadn't been injured at all.[break][break]

It's to that end that he finds himself in the training facility, taking out the whirlwind of his emotions with a bench press. His Lucario spots for him — though still embittered by the events of Littleroot, his long-time companion was finally starting to come around. The fighting-type can sense Gavin's weaknesses long before he's willing to admit to them, picks up the slack when Gavin's arm begins to tremble under the pressure.[break][break]

It's Lucario that finally tells him to call it quits — not through words, but through the kidnapping of the barbell. Gavin glowers up at the smug canine.[break][break]

"Break time, I get it."[break][break]

He's sweating from exertion, sits up on the bench and mops at his forehead with a towel. His bare chest is marked with scars, the ugliest being the angry, puckered scar on one shoulder. He hears someone else come into the room, but doesn't pay them any mind. Lucario sets down the weights and punches Gavin on his good shoulder, a friendly gesture he hadn't realised he'd been missing.

It would be naive to assume Rex was really here to train. He didn't do much that was diligent, and that included things like training. No, he threw open the door to the training room because he wanted to watch One kill things that he dislike...in this case, training dummies. Wonder if it would be bad if he wrote their "leader's" name on it...what was his name? [break][break]

Instead, he froze at the door, only pushed inwards by the impatient snout of One. The fossil smelled the stink of fear coming off Rex all day, something was bothering the man in a way that not even the frightning presence of it could curb. Irritation burned in all its impatient movements, shoving Rex aside as it looked for something it was allowed to disturb. [break][break]

Normally, he wouldn't allow One such freedom to push him around, but today was different. He bounced on his feet, moving on his toes like he was fleeing...the man was an anxious little boy and his movements gave him away. He gaped briefly at the severely ugly scars, wondering briefly if he missed some kind of assassination attempt, but his mind could focus enough to keep on the subject that was worrying him. "Hey, hey! Gav!" He chirped, trotting over, seeking some form of familiarity, "Um, you're a kinda boss too, right? Er, c-congrats..." There was no way he was keeping his mouth shut about his worries though, blurting them out in a fury, "I am not giving a congrats to the others, though." He spit, "Who's the "leader"? Never even heard of the guy!...what'd He give ya?" His anger quickly dissipated into a curiosity, both wondering where they got it, and where their terrible "leader" had gotten the authority to give it like that...who died and made him "leader", the boss? [break][break]

Behind him, One lashed and growled, wondering what could be so important that Rex wasn't giving it permission to do anything.

Gavin's head shifts at the cheerful greeting, gaze coming to land on a familiar figure. Rex is usually high-energy, but something about him seems particularly antsy today. Perhaps he's simply feeding off the energy of the submarine. Everyone seemed to be riled for their various reasons after Walsh's introduction, Gavin included.[break][break]

His laugh rises from deep in his throat, made somewhat hoarse by the cigarette he'd smoked earlier.[break][break]

"Kind of, yes." Had Rex just learned? "For a while now."[break][break]

Underboss before Dominic had been reinstated, and longer than Walsh had been their boss. That meant nothing, however: rank was rank, and Gavin would respect it. Dominic was his equal now, and Declan was the man they'd answer to.[break][break]

Rex doesn't seem to have the same idea.[break][break]

"Keep it down," he snaps, suddenly very serious. The whites of his eyes flash as they widen, then narrow. "Have you got a death wish? Walsh and Sinclair aren't the kind of guys you fuck with."[break][break]

Neither is Gavin, but Rex isn't fucking with him. Gavin glances at his Lucario and gives it some kind of wordless signal. It seems to focus on something that the trainers and even Rex's Aerodactyl cannot see: with it's aura sense, it ensures that they are alone, and gives a curt nod. It will keep watch for them, now.[break][break]

"Walsh is from Kanto. You know about that?"[break][break]

Gavin thinks anyone would be hard-pressed not to know of the region that Rocket had brought to its knees. Hoenn would be next. He remains uncertain if this is for good or for ill.[break][break]

He produces the beast ball from where it rests against his hip. "You saw it earlier?"

Indeed, in all unfortunate reality, Rex had learned just now. Except for their actual leader, one would be hard-pressed for Rex to remember where anybody was. [break][break]

At the very least, he has the obedience to shut up when Gavin snaps at him, except for a hastily whispered, "Oh shit, really?" His eyes are wide and he feels the urge to cover his mouth. That was fucking with them!? Come on, they can take a joke, right? Nobody gets angry just because he doesn't like them yet...oh who was he kidding, of course they'd get angry. [break][break]

"Yeah, Kanto." Rex nods as if he knows anything about the place besides what he's supposed to know, "It got really screwed over, right?" He tilts his head like a bewildered dog, "So what, they help or something?" They didn't seem that powerful, thankfully his mouth didn't spill those words for once. [break][break]

He looks stuck between leaning away or forward as the beast ball comes into view, as if it might bite him. "Yes I saw it, I don't think nobody didn't!" Nervous laughter bubbled under his tone, "It gotta be, like, number one among the shadow guys, right?" No offense, One. "Why'd he give it? You good with scary guys like that?"

"Were you not listening to Walsh?" It's not accusatory; if anything, the underboss sounds baffled. He'd hung onto each and every word the man had spoken, searching for any hint of threat or subtext. Had other Rockets not been just as on edge? Rex certainly seemed it. "He's a Kanto boss — was a Kanto boss. He's our boss, now."[break][break]

If they are dogs on a leash, Gavin's is a choke chain — as long as he was good, it offered freedom, but it could at any moment be pulled taught enough to strange him.[break][break]

"That remains to be seen," he says of Lugia, for he'd yet to explore its potential. It was certainly larger. As to why it had been entrusted to him... Gavin shrugs, but postulates: "I was a scientist before Cadis promoted me, and I've a fair amount of experience in battling. Perhaps he thinks I'm best suited to handle it."

If Rex had the shame to sweat, he would. Oh, yes, he had been listening. Unfortunately, his version of listening intently had made him forgot every important detail, there was no possible way he was remembering the guy was an actual boss when he was coming up with reasons in his head to hate every word that came out of the guy's mouth. "Hey, come on, ya can't 'pect me to remember everything glorious 'ol leader was saying." Seemed this particular puppy hadn't gotten the memo that, when the leash was handed over, you were supposed to follow the new holder. [break][break]

Well, ok, Gavin was smart enough to have it, Rex supposed. Smart people got privileges like that, he supposed. He'd have to wonder what the other bosses did to get a hold of Darkrai and that clown thing, though. [break][break]

Simple as Rex was, he immediately started comparing it to the other beacon of strength he had, One. "You scientist types like to figure things out, right?" He bounced over to One, grinning like he was offering something amazing, "My One here got one of those badass transforming things," He tapped his own earring, signaling to his Mega Stone, still barely knew what to call it, "Think it can beat him transformed?" He thought it was a smart question, though that remained to be seen.

"I'd expect you to remember the important parts." Kanto Rockets and those who'd come before it were a different breed. Gavin was a different breed: shaped into a weapon, ruthless. He'd retained shreds of his humanity at the cost of his mental health. Gavin sighs. "Cadis was in charge when you joined up?"[break][break]

A guess, based on his lack of caution.[break][break]

When questioned about Lugia, however, Gavin feels almost like he'll be kicking a puppy to tell Rex the truth. It doesn't stop him.

"Not likely. Shadow Pokemon are incredibly powerful in their own right, and Lugia is... something beyond." There's a hint of reverence in the Rocket's tone. He was not religious, did not deify the legendary as some did, but he remained in awe of their majesty. "I would be concerned that your One might not survive the encounter, even with the aid of mega-evolution. I've yet to explore the restraint that Lugia possesses under my jurisdiction."

If there was one thing Rex was willing to be self-deprecating about, it was his intelligence. "It seemed great, you know?" Lots of things seemed great to Rex, not many of them ended well for him. Rex looked ready to argue about the Shadow Lugia, puffing up, then abruptly deflating when he remembered who he was talking to. The ever-present fear of injury thrived in his head, and it crawled onto everything he owned...losing One would be like losing a leg, the very thought was terrifying. "That doesn't even seen real." He whined, stomping around and finally letting One loose on a dummy. How could it be stronger than this terrifying monster of his? "It's like ya got the best gift ever, what're the rest of us supposed to do? Get some popcorn while it wrecks shit?"

Gavin huffs, an almost-laugh that bears no humour. "Walsh'll be the fourth Rocket boss I've worked for. I'm here to ensure he's the last." Of course, that had been his job under Cadis as well, but Gavin couldn't have predicted the return of his illness. For Silas and his father before him, Gavin had been nothing more than a pawn. He'd been fond of Cadis as well, for being the first boss to treat him as more than that. He shakes off the feeling of melancholy that settles heavy on his shoulders. "Not much should change for you. I wouldn't worry."[break][break]

His only response to Rex's almost-defiance is a quirked brow that drops as the other seems to think better of what he'd been about to say.[break][break]

Reactions to the Lugia and Gavin's possession of it seemed mixed: either they were envious of and excited by its power, or terrified of it. Gavin himself falls somewhere in the middle.[break][break]

"With any luck, it won't be necessary to utilize its ability to 'wreck shit'." If they had to deploy such a dangerous weapon, it would mean something had gone awry — or perhaps, as with Blacephalon in Littleroot, they needed to ensure that it did. "The rest of you should be doing whatever you're told to."[break][break]

There's no threat nor malice in the statement; at this point, he's looking at One rather than Rex, brows arched as he watches the prehistoric creature decimate one of their training dummies.

Not much would change for him? He was almost disappointed. Maybe this new leader would actually be fun if he dropped all of this subtle crap and just did stuff. Was it contradictory to be want and not want change? Not for Rex. Not for a child. "Hooray. More of the same." He sounded both relieved and irritated, tapping his foot as he watched One do his thing. He stayed silent, a rarity, for a few seconds after Gavin explained it was unlikely they'd even be using the shadowy legendary, then scoffed out a laugh, "So the more badass I am, the less I can see that thing do its thing...I wanted to see what makes those shadows so much more...powerful." They were strong, like One, "So, like, how much stronger are they, these shadows? I mean, One is great the way he is but..." How about the others, like Three? Could he rely on them the same way he relied on One? Or maybe he could make them a scary weapon, like this Lugia thing. Even if he couldn't trust a shadow, it would make him feel alot safer.

He didn't easily learn, and simply thought that if Gavin said that keeping their powerful thing was a good strategy, it had to be. He couldn't come up with any other alternative. Besides, a boss had to be trusted, right? [break][break]

He smiled at his prehistoric monster, "I don't worry, I'm not gonna do that, not to One." His smile was easy and lazy, naively looking over an easy plan to power, to have something similar to a boss of his, "Never seen any myself, but I've seen lots of aggressive Pokemon. Rex, like so many in Rocket, seems to thrive on violence. Whether it's the thrill of it, as it had been for Gavin in his reckless youth, or simply a sadistic streak — it matters little. It saddens Gavin either way, though he masks it with his apathy.[break][break]

It concerns him more to think that Rex aspired to own a shadow Pokemon while having never seen one in action. His brow knits. "It's not simple aggression. They're practically feral. If —" Gavin hesitates, glances to his Lucario. The dual-type shakes its head: they remain alone. That was best, for a situation like this. "If you'd like to know what you're getting yourself into, I can show you my shadow Pokemon. My first, my Sandslash. There's — not really room for Lugia in here."

For some reason, this conversation wasn't going the way Rex was expecting. A fellow Rocket was trying to convince him of the "dangers" of the Shadows, and he didn't quite know what to make of it. On one hand, why not? On the other hand, smart people typically knew what they were talking about...a conundrum Rex didn't know how to solve or understand. [break][break]

Luckily, Gavin was providing an easy way for Rex to understand. To see it. "You got a Sandslash?" A fierce looking Pokemon, its name stayed in Rex's memory. His tone rose in confidence, faux, as he beckoned One to approach, to protect him, "Yeah, show me. I want to see 'em, really." No, he did not, but the idea of seeming scared was more of a bother than actually seeing the scary thing.
