They haven't spoken since Walsh's speech. After its conclusion, Gavin had assigned himself to the business of ensuring order among muted chaos; many were unhappy with their change in management. Most of the management are themselves unhappy, for their various reasons. The stench of cigarette smoke clings to him like a shroud. It is a byproduct of time spent in the company of Dominic and Marcel, but also of his own indulgence.[break][break]

It had been in this very space that he'd sat with Marcel, smoke curling past his lips as their ideals clashed. Guilt takes its place. His footsteps echo as he passes beneath a window of thick glass, never looking up. It is unnerving to think of all the ocean's pressure crushing down upon them.[break][break]

"There you are, love." Gavin's deep, soft timbre carries easily in the quiet. "I've been trying to reach you."

The announcement, the change of hands, the course of action they would take - it had stirred an abundance of questions and concerns in the pit of her stomach. The normally stoic Wolfe was.. conflicted, and had sought out privacy to mull over her thoughts. [break][break]

When Gavin finds her, she stands up straight from her slight lean, but it takes a moment longer for her to bring her attention back to him. She blinks, regarding the man with unease. Her gaze slides to the blinking phone in her pocket, likely containing the unseen messages he had sent.[break][break]

Her eyes slowly scan the man's form, disappointment clear in the furrow of her brow. He reeks of cigarette smoke, she can see the twitch of his fingers, the guilt he carries himself with. It's subtle and may not have been there if she wasn't looking. But she is. She's looking for his doubt, his fear, his guilt.[break][break]

The air is tense between them and Emma's comes from her unwillingness to breathe in what toxin he oozes. When he approaches, she stiffens, an involuntary reaction that stems from the thoughts swirling in her head. They bear insurmountable weight on her shoulders.[break][break]

She turns away from him, the crease between her eyebrows growing. Muscles jump in her back, the result of being too wound-up. Like a drawn bow pulled taut. It's just a matter of time.[break][break]

Emma curls her hand around a hand-rail, focusing on the cold metal and the biting grip engraved in the hilt.

She should be proud of him. Proud of how far he has come, has climbed, has sacrificed to stand where he is now. He is her superior, first and foremost. And now he possesses enough power to destroy her, to destroy himself.[break][break]

Her grip tightens around the metal until the engraving bites at her flesh with intent to hurt.[break][break]

There is exhaustion in his tone, a breathless response indicative of his stress, of how heavily her words weigh on him. It worries her, and it is that worry that makes her cautious and afraid.[break][break]

What had she sunk to, to be concerned over a man? To become lost in the 'what if's' of this corrupted beast that now - apparently - stoops to his beck and call.[break][break]

Weak. She has grown soft.[break][break]

"Nothing."[break][break]

But she isn't talking about his reaction to Lugia, not that he would pick that up. She is thinking back to his rescue in the alleyways, her slip-up that had almost cost her her life. It had been her punishment and he her saving grace. But she could see, now, how cursed she was, how she held him back.[break][break]

Perhaps he wouldn't be so tired if her disappointment didn't bore into the back of his mind.

When he sighs, her chin drops, angled to the side to hear him. Her own shoulders sag as his do, a shared symbol of their fatigue.[break][break]

"You never escape Rocket."[break][break]

She had said that once before, prayed it may not be true - it was. It rang true each and every day. She belonged to Rocket, as did Gavin -- he was just far more entangled in their affairs and the danger than she was. Perhaps that was what scared her, just how deep he had gone.[break][break]

Her exhale is shaky as she straightens her back. Slowly, she pries her han
d off of the railing, letting her fingertips dangle at her side. She is the first to reach for him, even despite her better judgement.[break][break]

Emma wants to remain angry - but is that even what she is? Is she angry? She isn't sure anymore. Afraid, maybe, afraid of the unpredictable future. Afraid of what Gavin might do.[break][break]

Instinct begs him to reach out as he hears the shakiness of her exhale. Fear of rejection, of seeing her once more retreat from him, holds that instinct at bay. Emma is the first to overcome the barrier placed between them — relief floods him as her fingers brush against bruised knuckles. His grip on the rail softens, as does his expression as he looks to her.[break][break]

Trust. For him, it is the highest form of praise.[break][break]

He does not know how to give thanks for a thing such as this. His lips part in the hopes of finding the words, press together in silent disappointment when he finds his mind is empty. His eyes search hers as if hoping to convey that which he couldn't express aloud.[break][break]

In the end, he shifts his body to face her and laces the fingers of his free hand with hers, squeezes.[break][break]

"I trust you, too." Dominic's needling comes back to him, sudden, and there's a flash in his eyes like the lightning of gathered storms overhead. Such malice is directionless, his grip on her hand steady but not oppressive. "I don't give a shit if the others don't, but — Dominic, he brought up Navel Rock. Petrov. He—" His fingers clench briefly before he seems to catch himself, relent. Gavin's nostrils flare with the embers of rage. "I don't know if he's trying to start shit with us or just fuck with me, but if any of it's true... I'd rather hear it from you, Em."[break][break]

His grip slackens further, a silent indication that she's free to pull away from him if she's upset. The look he gives her is careful, probing but not accusatory.

She hadn't expected their conversation to take such a turn, but it had.[break][break]

In one breath he is lacing his fingers through hers and squeezing, and she can feel this mutual trust flow through her with a sense of warmth, of security. And the next, he looks at her with a look of concern and skepticism. She can see that his question warrants confusion, disbelief - and yet he asks her anyway.[break][break]

The look in his eye says it all, the flash of discomfort, that faraway look of anger. It isn't directed at her, but it might as well be, because it involves her. Although his grip doesn't remain tight, it feels tight. She doesn't pull away, however, but hangs in the balance.[break][break]

Her attempt to stop him is weak and she watches him with a look of discomfort, irritation, stress. Something she can't pinpoint because it still doesn't make sense to her, why even bring it up?[break][break]

Despite the twist of the knife in her belly, the trickle of dread down her spine - Emma remains poised and perfect in front of him. His questioning makes her nervous because she's aware of the pointed glares and stares she receives. She knows how people look at her, how specific members of Rocket treat her like a spy, a turnfeather. [break][break]

It makes her sick to wonder if Gavin believes them, and it's because of that that she doesn't pull away from him despite her discomfort, that she holds on.[break][break]
