He had, and even still she questions it in secret. Anyone else would have let her die, may have played a part in her death, perhaps. Dominic would have, surely. She's seen the predatory look in his eye, the rage, the hatred. He would have driven the knife into her gut, not taken it out.[break][break]

It occurs to her that she doesn't really remember what happened, what she remembered. The battlefield, the top of the tower, it had been full of fire, of smoke, of blood. She remembers a young Rocket grunt perishing at the claws of the false Ho-oh, her Scolipede mitigating damage from attacks led astray. [break][break]

Gavin pulls away from her and for a moment she feels detached, as if she might have severed something as a result of her bewildered response. Her hand hovers a moment before returning to her side, clenching. The woman regards him with a blank expression of disbelief, unsure what to make of his exasperated response.[break][break]

It only magnifies when he curses, when he announces that there are witnesses that can attest to her actions - actions she had never even fucking taken.[break][break]

"What are you talking about? Witnesses for what? Witnesses who saw me saving my own ass? It was a bloodbath, every man for themselves. No one was loyal. I chose to save someone I knew would have my back - I didn't even know if we would make it out of there alive. Not all of us did."[break][break]

She knows she had turned away from her colleagues, that her actions could have been considered traitorous. But she had also been witness to friendly fire elsewhere. It had been every man for themselves, there was no one to blame but their own fear and stupidity. They'd thrown caution to the wind, and in the end, it hadn't even been her who had let their turncoat underboss go. Rocket had been a prison, a death sentence. She had been their puppet, their pocket assassin, their weapon. [break][break]

But she hadn't turned on them despite the horrors she had faced, the pain she had endured, the distrust she had faced. They had driven her out over this? A misunderstanding, a blatant overlook of the real threat? She hadn't been the ones with her hands on Boris.[break][break]

"Why would they? They were all out to save themselves, same as anyone. I did what I had to do to survive, but I never attacked anyone that didn't deserve it. I was defending myself." [break][break]
