It had been a while since Thomas ventured through the Rusturf Tunnel. After having moved out of Rustboro City, and into Verdanturf Town, Thomas had rarely had to go in, spending most of his time on his Ranch. But perhaps looking for a fight on his way over, or just wanting to visit his old stomping grounds, Thomas found himself trekking through the cave connecting the two areas of Hoenn.

Whatever he encountered along the way, he was silently hoping that it was enough of a threat that he'd need to Mega Evolve his Scizor again. It had been far too long since he had the opportunity to do so, and frankly, Ripper was itching to do it again.

As he walked through the unfamiliar 'rockscapes' Sénon relaxed his mind so that his body might adjust to the mostly darkened surroundings. The six on his hip were all put away save for the baby of the group; the charmander whom was the most recent addition to the team. So fresh he was that he didn't even have a name yet.

What he did have was a fear of almost everything and that fear was what needed to be broken.

Frankly, he could relate; the last year of his life had been spent surviving terror and denying trauma. The truth of it was they had both needed this first step in reclaiming some normalcy. What better way to stave away fear and doubt than to wonder aimlessly in a dark if not dank cave. This place was no Mt. Moon, but the pokémon in any cave system lived tough. They wouldn't just roll over against a wet-behind-the-'ears' fire-type.

Still, this darkness was surely easier for him to handle than his partner. Back in the day Koga's gym had been riddled with trap doors, false walls and dark pits. Aside from locale, and the potential pokémon waiting in the darkness to ambush the two of them, none of this was new.

"Relax yourself." He placed a hand on top the shivering head of the Lizard Pokémon. He expected even the steel-types here would be on alert and about their business, and just as well, for Sénon training up his team was business he should have long-since been back to. "You're not alone anymore."

Thomas was not alone. As the Gym Leader traveled through the tunnel, he'd take notice to the glow of a torch. He would then hear a male voice. Perhaps it was paranoia that put the Gym Leader on alert, despite the other person clearly not being stealthy themselves. Thomas' hand would hover over his belt of Pokeballs, ready to draw at a moment's notice.

A Sandslash would emerge from the ground, prompting Thomas to quickly deploy Colt the Clawitzer from his Pokeball. The Clawitzer immediately took notice of the emerging Sandslash. The Sandslash too, took notice, and in a panic, immediately burrowed back down into the earth. "Stay frosty!", Thomas called out to the Clawtizer, looking around for signs of the Sandslash coming back up from the earth. Indeed, Thomas would see the earth being disturbed behind the Clawitzer. "On your six!", Thomas called out, prompting the Clawitzer to turn.

As the Sandslash emerged, it would attempt to slash into the shrimp with a Slash. Instinctively, Colt blasted back with a Water Pulse, propelling him away from the Sandslash's reach. The Sandslash would then begin to whip up a Sand Tomb around the Clawitzer, trapping him in place, before running at him, and spinning up into a Gyro Ball.

"Two o'clock!", Thomas called out to the Clawitzer.

Colt would turn accordingly, before firing off another Water Pulse from inside his sandy prison. The sphere of water, empowered by his Mega Launcher, would pierce through the wall of sand, and slam directly into the oncoming Sandslash, launching him into the nearest cave wall, and knocking him out. The Sand Tomb would dissipate around Colt, who only looked annoyed. "You good?", Thomas asked. Despite his griping, Colt was clearly good.

Now there was the matter of the second person in the cave. Were they friend, or foe? Only one way to be sure.

With their shadows bound to the walls via charmander's tail flame, they almost didn't see the mole-esque pokémon until it moved to investigate them. "What is that?" It didn't matter."INFERNO!" As the flames wrapped around the ground-type the Senon crossed his arms in waiting; coaching his baby lizard. "We have to trust each other in battle." Tense and uneasy the charmander looked back and forth between its burning opponent and its chilled trainer, so it was off guard when the Drilbur extinguished the flames with a countering spin of the body;

Drilbur was burned.
Drilbur used RAPID SPIN, raising its speed!

"SLASH!" There was so little time to talk with the Drilbur zipping about with such speed.

Drilbur suffered burn damage.
Drilbur used CRUSH CLAW!

It unnerved him to hear the fledgling lizard cry out in pain; its own slash attack cut off by the slashing of the mole. Even with its defense lowered it took the first chance it could to retaliate; slashing back to give as good as it got. Lumbering over to a mounting pile of rubble the mole quickly grabbed at a boulder. "Use DRAGON BREATH NOW!"

Drilbur suffered burn damage.
Drilbur used ROCK SLIDE!

Bending forward for leverage the Charmander let out a deep roar from his heated throat. The boulder it had thrown knocked his 'Flame Pokémon' on its ass, the winds it threw back at its attacker smashed the mole into walls of the tunnel. His charmander was wounded but still had a little fight left in him; his tailflame had intensified.

Drilbur suffered burn damage.
Drilbur used CRUSH CLAW!

Tanking another slash attack the Charmander seemed to begin to find its battle spirit. Senon made the mental note of its progress but for now the battle was surely over. The mole wasn't ready to give up but its body was cut up and burned it wasn't likely it could fight its way out of a pokéball. Even if it could, he had two more on stand-by.

Crimsen threw a pokéball!

So distracted they had both become with the "Drilbur", according to his phone, they hadn't noticed another trainer in the vicinity watching them. With only one win now under his belt Charmander didn't have a name yet but he had a taste of victory. He stepped forward to the stranger and his pokemon. Its body language was challenging, but its eyes unsure; it didn't seem to want to fight, only to defend itself. Quickly enough, Senon would alleviate its weariness. "Take it easy Mr. Hyde." Placing his hand on the youngling's head again it relaxed. "We're not here to take on other trained pokémon, you're not ready for that."

He gave the other man a long look. "Neither am I."

The look conceded into a head nod.

Suddenly, a golem rolled by so fast it was almost mistaken for an indiana jones reference. Leaning down to be level with his Charmander Mr. Game told it what to do with a single sound. "Shhhh." Growing up Kanto he knew enough about Golem v Charmander to not take the risk.

After having dealt with the Sandslash, he would notice a man and his Charmander battling and capturing a Drilbur. With the battle said and done, it approached the Clawitzer, looking like it was gearing up to fight with him. Normally, the Clawitzer was more than happy to take on anyone who came at him. But the Charmander in question seemed young, seemed to have a defensive look in his eyes. But before Colt could try to ask the Charmander what it was doing, the red-haired man stepped in.

"And I'm not here to challenge anyone.", he'd tell the man. Though it was lightened by years of studying and speaking other languages, Senon would be able to pick out the Kalosian accent on the stranger. "I'm just passing through.", he'd continue.

The conversation would be interrupted when a Cufant charged towards them. The creature seemed to be in a blind, panicked frenzy, smashing through everything in its path indiscriminately. Even if they could merely dodge, Thomas knew that the Cufant, if left to continue, would hurt someone soon. "Colt, go ahead.", he told the Clawitzer with a nod.

That was all the Clawitzer needed to hear, as he charged an Aura Sphere at the Cufant, which seemed to increase in size and intensity in the large pincer it came from. Firing off at the Cufant, the Aura Sphere struck the steely elephant dead on. The attack would cause the Cufant to cry out in pain, before toppling over on its side. Before it gave in, and passed out, it would shoot the one-eyed man a pleading look, as if it were scared.

Thomas, not intending to leave the creature in the cave to hurt itself, or others, tapped the unconscious Cufant with a Pokeball. "It'll be alright.", he told the Cufant softly.

As the other trainer returned his desire of avoiding a battle just passing by, two new pokémon appeared. There was something in the other guy's accent that rang familiar but he couldn't quite place it while fending off a bigger mystery. He wasted no time looking it up on 'dataDEX' from his phone. In the meantime given it was likely a steel type or possibly electric, fire was sure to do at least a little damage. "Use INFERNO!" The cave would become quite well lit as a relatively small tower of fire was erected, although it missed its smaller target whom ominously began to glow.

Bronzor used PAYBACK!

Wrapped in a dark aura the gear-esque pokemon his phone identified as "Bronzor" smashed itself across the charmanders jaw, knocking it down to the ground and off its feet. "Get up!" The Lizard winced at being yelled at until it shook off the shock of being hit so hard, of being embarrassed and took down a peg or two, of its most powerful attack missing the target. "We're not done yet!" His tone was gruff but there was a nurturing encouragement behind it the kanto-native pokémon would become familiar with, just as his father before him. "Get up, INFERNO once more!" It's tail-flame grew in response and it moved with a heated vigor, landing its attack and ready for a retaliation once again.

Bronzor was burned!
Bronzor used EXTRASENSORY!

The answer to what could've sent the Cufant in a panic arrived when a Scizor smashed through some rocks. The Scizor in question looked to be agitated. Though its agitation was more out of desperation, and less out of bloodlust. Nevertheless, the Scizor was a threat that had to be dealt with.

Thomas sent out Brutus the Pangoro. Immediately, the Scizor threw a Bullet Punch at the large Panda, only for it to be deflected with a Bullet Punch of his own. The Pangoro uttered a taunt at the Scizor, sending the red bug into a fit of anger, unable to focus himself on anything but getting back at the Pangoro. It would attempt to slash at the bear with an X-Scissor from its two pincers. Despite the close quarters they were in, and his large stature, Brutus deftly maneuvered away from the swipes, before dealing a Drain Punch to the chest of the Scizor, striking it dead on, and sending it flying into the cave wall.

The Scizor struggled to get up, only to stumble back into the cave wall. It was clear that the Scizor was not in the best shape, whether it was something with his health, or a wound he sustained earlier. In any case, Thomas wasted no time in throwing a Pokeball at it, attempting to catch it, and get it out of there.

Having never been hit with psychic type attack before it was no wonder the force of it knocked the little lizard off its feet yet again. Not needing the same lesson twice the charmander got back to its feet but when ordered to attack, "Use FIRE FANG!" Charmander flinched!

Bronzor suffered burn damage!
Bronzor used METAL SOUND, it wasn't very effective...

Despite the painful screeching in his ears and the damage it did his body, Charmander took it in stride. Heaving from the damage and probably drunk on the growing thrill of battle it planted its feet with a challenging grin on its face, the Blaze on it's tail and in its blood undeniable as it made its last stand. "FIRE FANG!" Like it was going after a disrespectful piece of meat Charmander stormed after the Bronze pokémon snatching it from the air and biting down with superheated fangs. The Bronzor even cried out from the pain but wasn't knocked out.

Bronzor suffered burn damage!
Bronzor flinched!

Before the little cog passed out a pokeball bounced off its plating, its red light willing it inside.

Crimsen threw a pokéball!
Crimsen attempted to capture Bronzor!

It created a nice vibe to have another trainer at his back who could handle himself.

Sénon didn't feel a huge urge to be chatty or communicate, seemingly, the other guy felt the same. In a sense the two men bonded in silence from the shared experience; spending time with their pokémon. Putting in the T.L.C. to train and battle and capture in relative peace knowing the other person would stave off any threats on their side of the divide.

It lowered the stakes in a way that made what was happening comfortable, they could both focus on the development of their teams. That was gift from a stranger that the Kantonian didn't intend to waste.

As grateful as he was to the unfamiliar face, a new face appeared he was quite familiar with. Magneton wasted no time in defending itself firing a Tri-Beam to hit Charmander's chest. In winced but didn't flinch before the magnet could fire again "INFERNO!" Charmander returned 'fire' with urgency. "Before it can recover use FIRE FANG!" Chasing it down Charmander took an extra attack while the Magneton pondered what to do next, reacting too slowly to match the speed and cunning of a trainer and pokémon working together.

Magneton used TRI-ATTACK!
Charmander used INFERNO; its super effective!
Charmander used FIRE FANG; its super effective!
