Emma hazards a slow exhale. Just up ahead, she can see the migration of Castform, specially ordered for Rocket use. They were to organize them and smuggle them to the submarine for use in the community courtyard. Apparently there were a few soft hearts in Rocket tending to a personal community garden. She had no qualms, but being assigned this mission with Gavin's sister seemed a little... out of place.[break][break]

She knew he meant well, inclined to put her and Lulu together for some family bonding or something - but Emma couldn't help the irritated eyebrow twitch she had mastered hiding. It didn't occur to her that Gavin hadn't chosen this mission, surely he knew she wasn't a talker. Because this was definitely an excuse to just talk. [break][break]

Her nose wrinkles at the thought, just for a second. [break][break]

Where is she, anyway? Maybe if they were punctual with their smuggling, Emma could dip early. Was she getting cold feet over a conversation with Gavin's sister? The thought made her more nauseous than just talking. [break][break]

lulu was great in social situations where she felt disconnected from everyone in the room. she had a good sense of humor and could carry on with the best of them. however, she didn’t get close to others, not ever intentionally, at least. her life was comprised of work and sleep, and the occasional night out on the town. she’d been raised to be cold and diligent. even with cillian, there were moments of great distance between those of warmth. they hadn’t talked about family matters since she’d arrived. they probably wouldn’t for a long time. now, it was her sisterly duty to accept someone else into their fucked up fold; meant to give her blessing, or something—not that it likely mattered to anyone involved. yes, it had been her idea to meet emma, but now that the moment had arrived, she had no idea what to do with it. this was too close to home, and home was weird, and she wasn’t used to having company there.

the choice of the mission had been for cillian’s sake, so as to not tip him off to how ready she was to return to a life of danger and adrenaline. it had been for her sake too, as less danger meant less lectures, for now, at least while she was new. like emma, lulu didn’t have the words for this situation prepared. it was a homework assignment she’d put back. regardless of her lack of plan, she admitted to herself that she was curious. cillian had never had a girlfriend. he’d always been so busy. this person had somehow come in and slowed him down in a way no one else had ever done, and that was… something. not to mention, she was her much higher superior, and ‘one of our best’ as he’d put it. emma was one of the big guns, and that made her worth meeting all on its own. for a long while, work had been lulu’s top priority. that didn’t change just because family was involved.

she’d taken a cheap cab most of the way there, still not possessing a pokemon with great traveling perks. she’d had them drop her off a bit out of sight from the flock. she had then walked the last ten minutes, to the obscure part of the beach where emma was supposed to be located. she took in the details of her as she got closer. she was beautiful, but she did not look warm. lulu wondered, briefly, what else she had been expecting.

“emma wolfe.” she held out a hand, intending to shake hers firmly if she offered it. “nice to meet you.” she willed a smile to her face as she held her own name in her mouth—or, rather, both of them. ultimately, not sure which one to use, she let them fade on her tongue and said nothing. awkward start. she then cleared her throat and turned, suddenly becoming aware of her lengthy eye contact. she looked up at the castform. “i’ve never seen these things before.” she admitted, but emma would have probably known that, and they were words of procrastination rather than of substance.

Emma's position within Rocket was straightforward: she was a glorified P.E. teacher or military superior. She ran the grunts through training, brought them to hell and back, and often got looked down on as some sort of insensitive monster. Which wasn't entirely untrue, she was an insensitive monster most of the time. But this time she did it for good reason - because it was her job. Rocket needed reliable pawns, not whatever the fuck they had going for them right now.[break][break]

Honestly, she looked worse because of how incapable some of the new recruits seemed to be.[break][break]

But she expected better from Gavin's sister, this was just not the kind of mission warranting any show of prowess. Perhaps that was what made her so agitated, the sheer mundaneness of their task. That, and the fact that upon arrival, Lulu insisted on a handshake greeting. Emma sees through the forced smile and ultimately does not make any move to reciprocate the handshake, instead choosing to keep her hands to herself. The woman instead regards Lulu with a cautious gaze, her expression guarded.[break][break]

"Likewise."[break][break]

There is a moment of awkward silence on Lulu's end that Emma avoids like the plague, instead choosing to break apart from the woman and head toward their destination. One brief glance is cast over her shoulder at the admittance of ignorance. [break][break]

"They're Castform. Glorified clouds we use to change the weather artificially. They're still Pokemon though, so don't underestimate their strength."[break][break]

She squints at the group of them. The docket said that they had names and would answer to them. Something told her that wasn't necessarily true. They already looked like annoying little spitfire trouble-makers.[break][break]

"Apparently they respond to the names: Koga, Janine, Roxie, Plumeria, and Klara."[break][break]

She scoffs, shaking her head before looking back at Lulu.[break][break]

"So? How would you go about rounding them up?"[break][break]

was it though? lulu let the hand fall back at her side, forced smile flat-lining. she was no expert, but this felt backwards. nonetheless, she didn’t protest.

lulu followed emma, coming up on her side to observe the castform. they flitted around in the air hyperactively, looking unruly. she nodded affirmatively at emma’s tip, although this was information she’d already gathered. she remained quiet. her superior, regardless of cillian’s relationship with her, was dismissive so far. lulu wouldn’t test her.

the grunt chewed the inside of her lip as emma read off the roster. the names felt painfully silly, making this interaction all the more awkward. lulu hadn’t even bothered to name her own pokemon. without making eye contact, she slid a backpack off of her shoulders. reaching into it, she pulled a hard black, dimpled case which contained a net launcher, which she then assembled. once finished, she retrieved her weezing’s pokeball and released it.

“weezing, use your smog and get ‘em all close together.” the weezing went to work, generating toxic plumes in its wake as it rounded closer and closer, herding the castform.

lulu readied the net launcher on her shoulder, looking over at emma, deadpanning, “this work for you?”

given that they’d been given names to coax the pokemon with, poisoning and then netting them could have been against the rules. she certainly hoped not, because she didn’t care for the demeaning obvious alternative.

Just watching the group of Castform flit around with such carefree abandon was migraine-inducing, and that much is obvious with the pinched expression Emma bears. She genuinely seems more exasperated than usual, her brows furrowed together with irritation as she considers their options. The reason she had asked Lulu was because she hadn't wanted to think herself. This was such a mundane task, and for what? An artificial garden in their gigantic submarine?[break][break]

Bizarre, that's what this was.[break][break]

Emma scratches the back of her neck, pausing to glance back at Lulu as she rummaged through her backpack for... a net launcher? The puzzled look she expresses is genuine as she slow-blinks. And then the woman's Koffing herds the Castform into a neat group with its toxic gas. She pinches her nose and steps off to the side.[break][break]

And then, when Lulu wields the net launcher and deadpans her question, Emma actually chuckles.[break][break]

"Works for me."[break][break]

The Castform were already gasping and wheezing as a result of the poison. Rocket had never specified in what condition they wanted them returned - just that they wanted them alive. That's what the on-board medics were for, right? What else were they being paid for? Emma gestures for the young woman to go ahead and take care of the situation.[break][break]

lulu’s ears perked at the sound of emma’s chuckle, but her face didn’t acknowledge it. the woman’s aloofness had momentarily dissolved her any plans of trying to relate. although, it gave her more hope than nothing.

she nodded and began guiding the gun by the stabilizer, peering down the aperture and centering it on the center of the smog. the castform could barely be seen, only by their silhouettes, faintly. she took a moment, squinting, and then pulled the trigger. the compression released with a loud pop and a whooshing sound and the net sailed into the air, corner-weights framing their targets until they wrapped around them and brought them dropping heavily into the shallow water below.

the counterweights being heavy as they were, they pulled the castform a bit below the surface. lulu set her launcher down and jogged over, grabbing the net and unceremoniously dragging her catch from the water from over her shoulder. when they were on the sand, she dropped the net. they weren’t going anywhere.

her amber eyes, which emma would know well in a way, assessed them and then went up to look at her from a small distance. “well, some of ‘em are still kickin.’” none were dead, but klara, janine, and roxie had seen decidedly better days.

the weezing continued to circle around contentedly in the air as the smog dissipated, happy to be out of its pokeball for a change. lulu had been favoring perrserker lately.

Emma watches, her gaze cold and unreadable, as Lulu takes aim. She seems to hold her breath and exhale in the same moment the other woman does, as if putting herself in the woman's shoes and imagining herself as the one pulling the trigger.[break][break]

The net flies from the throat of the gun, spinning and billowing out. It sails, unfurling to capture the crowded Castform. With a gasp like the flame from a candle being snuffed, the net crashes to the ground and peels the Castform out of the smoke and smog. She shifts her weight, quietly satisfied.[break][break]

Lulu runs up to retrieve the Pokemon, closing the net and effectively swinging them over her shoulder. Emma remains stony and unreadable even as she approaches, dropping the net onto the sand. The weights scatter sand across her shoes and she takes a step back. [break][break]

But when she glances back up to meet Lulu's gaze, her breath hitches in her throat. The familiarity of her amber eyes are warm, posing a similarity to Gavin's, a threat. It catches her off-guard and she swallows, averting her gaze. Instead, she finds the Weezing just as the smog dissipates, and she exhales quietly through her nose.[break][break]

"As long as they're awake when we deliver them."[break][break]

Personally, she wasn't too hard-pressed to deliver them. They seemed like a ticking fucking time bomb. All it took was one stupid grunt to aggravate one of them to start a fire on the submarine. No courtyard of greenery in the middle of the deep blue sea was worth drowning over, in her opinion. [break][break]

THE CASTFORM IN HER PARTNER'S BAG shift and writhe against the fabric. Thankfully, the poison is strong enough to keep them subdued. Emma's worries of the Castform being ticking time bombs are not entirely unfounded. Their ability to adapt to any weather for their attacks can become unpredictable should they conjure their own climate.[break][break]
